you are a lot of freaking morons. None of you actually know how tall andre the Giant actually was . None of you . Are any of you his former physician ? No ? Oh OK
Don't say "none of you." You don't know me personally.
I happened to have met Andre once at the hotel he and the wrestlers were staying when they came to town for a wrestling event at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. I stood next to him in the Lobby: so, taking into account that I am 5-foot-8, it's quite easy to calculate the difference he towered over me, side-by-side.
I guarantee you he was 7-Foot, give or take an inch either way.
who knows i mean look at kane an the undertaker kane is cleerly a little bit taller by maybe a few inchis they are bothe waering boots when they are in the ring when guys get to 40 to 45 years of age there spine bens forword theres no geting around it an yet u look them up it says kane is 6foot8 an taker still 6foot10
7foot4 or 5 by about 1985 he was hunching over as was his head an he was 550 lbs wich made him about 7foot he was hunching even more by 88 if he is 6foot11 here this must be like 1974
You're full of shit. Neither Andre nor Jerry Blackwell could've been your great-granda. You're 19 years old--which means your great-grandpa must've lived around the turn of the 1900's. (Whereas Andre lived 1946-1993 & Blackwell lived 1949-1995.)
Next thing we know, you'd say a former president was your relative, too!
Andre wins of course! You can't beat him in a bodyslam contest! Patera was right, and it took real class to give the compliment coming from a weightlifter like Ken. $5,000 in 1980, a nice chunk of change!
Wish Andre hadn't let his alcoholism and gluttony for food get out of control like he did. Everyone blames his giantism for his early death...he could have been alive for another 20 years if he had taken care of himself.
Once Andre had learned, at a young age, that his Acromegaly would lead to an early death, he decided right then to live his partying lifestyle.
However, the fact that he had died while returning home for his father's funeral shouldn't be overlooked either.
He had arrived back home to France for that funeral, attended it, went back to his hotel, and was found dead in his sleep the next morning of a heart attack.
So, it wasn't just the Acromegaly and excessive booze which did him in. The grief
@BrickhouseB2 With all due respect, although I would agree with you that his drinking and overeating took a toll on his health, I somehow doubt any doctor would support the idea that there was any realistic scenario wherein he might have lived another 20 years. I think André knew his chances of one day being a senior citizen were slim to none, and therefore decided to enjoy however much time he had to the fullest.
@luiskilla13 No. That's just, well, kayfabe. He was about 6'11.5"-7'0.5" (let's just call it 7') in his prime. During his most impressive years he was 400-475 lbs, though he was 309 as a rookie. As his Acromegaly & eating/drinking problems worsened, his weight went up to 520-535 lbs. in the WWF and climbed north of 550 in retirement. At the time of his death, Andre was 540 lbs. and was about 6'9.75" due to his spine, hips and knees collapsing on themselves as the bones grew heavier & thicker.
Jerry Blackwell made a great opponent for Andre. Blackwell giving Andre the backbody drop @ 2:20 was amazing. I have never seen Andre take that move before.
@Lfdjake91 Me too, never saw Andre take that move before, surprising move from Blackwell. Too bad this feud din't last long, would have been a legendary feud in my opinion, Blackwell was very talented for a 400 pounds man.
@Lfdjake91 My God, I liked to fell outta the chair when I saw that! I've NEVER seen that! Then again, Crusher Blackwell was strong as an ox, anyway...
Given that this match had a $5,000 stipulation for whoever could bodyslam the other guy, it makes me think of one thing.
The WWF then had Andre against Big John Studd in a bodyslam match. So did Vince McMahon ever have an original idea? Or did he take all his ideas from soneone else?
One of the oldest gimmicks in wrestling, a heel would offer $1000 or $5000 to anyone who could bodyslam him, break his hold, or defeat him under a certain amount of time and then a babyface would come along and do it and the heel would protest saying they didn't do it or didn't do it right and refuse to pay the money setting up a series of matches between the two for the amount in dispute.
my man dotdotkins!!! your footage archive is INSANE!!!!!!! the awa days r my fav 4 the warriors and u got some real good classics. plus the hogan, high flyer, blackwell, etc. most of this stuff i couldn't see cuz i'm from philly and all we got was wwf(till about 85). i had 2 read the mags. thanx 4 sharing.
That's BS. First, almost nothing in wrestling is really original everyone stole angles & gimmicks from everyone else. Second, Vince created the Rock & Wrestling Connection story that completly revolutionized the buisness.
all rock and wrestling did was give vince a bigger stage for his bullshit and allowed the true fans to see wwf for the true circus it was. we're talking WRESTLING. i never gave a fuck about mr.t,cindy lauper, liberace or anybody else that showed up. celebrities loved mid-south wrestling but u didn't c bill watts putting them in the ring. vince stole the whole"hardcore"schtick from ecw. if he didn't,wwf would have went UNDER. nobody gave a fuck about wwf in the early 90's.
This video is amazing for a few reasons. Blackwell's back body drop on Andre was astounding. How many wrestlers can claim to have done that? Andre being thrown into the corner almost unhinges the turnbuckles - something that once happened in a remarkable match against Nick Bockwinkel. Finally - Andre lost? Even by disqualification, I didn't think Andre lost hardly ever.
the only other person ive ever seen backdrop andre was adrian adonis it was and i hope still is on youtube , andre had a bad temper and from time to time got disqualified , actualy im surprised andre slammed blackwell as blackwells low center of gravity made it harder to lift him up
footage is awesome..youtube is great for this..alot of people remember andre for mid to late 80s in the wwf, and he didnt move well then..
i remember chief j strongbow in the mid 80s as being a lame jobber..saw some footage of him from the mid 70s, and he had charasima, a decent build, and was a good worker..

@generationll
Blackwell did wrestle Calhoun. this was the time when you had so many territories, jobbers had full time employment.
Blackwell did not last long in WWF something like 4 months
