Or, well, now that I think about it (and the way you went about step 8 made me realize it), I guess I understand it, but there's still no explanation of the 20 screens thing.
By the way, according to the Wiki, you go down 20 screens, touch the lower-right corner without going down another screen, then break the wall, or go back up and go down 19 screens and break it.

You know everyone says "La-Mulana is hard, even harder than Cave Story," funny thing is I think La-Mulana is easier than Cave Story because it's not so fast-paced.
Those directions came from the ones I posted initially (before the English translation). I was using the game editor + babelfish to determine exactly what to do. The first step was me not understanding the editor correctly, as the message ID for that glyph is the same as the trigger used to determine when all bosses have been killed.
I've just defeated Palenque and I already killed Viy a while back, completed the Confusion Gate etc. etc. but the game's not letting me step on the face relief's mouth. I was thinking "oh, maybe I already did it and forgot," but sleeping in front of the surface statue doesn't do anything at this point. I hope I haven't hosed myself accidentally at some point, because I really really want the Hell treasure! Do you know what could be wrong?
Not exactly sure... according to WhiteKnell, step 1 isn't necessary, but based on what you've said, there's most likely a prerequisite that I'm unaware of.
I recorded the video near the end of the game, so I'm not exactly sure what may be needed to be able to enter the face relief.
You mean the one with the tombstone teleporters? I may have to pick it up again and try it... that's about as far as I've gotten, sadly. I may even just hold off till I can max out all my subweapons, if I'm gonna spend any time in the 'LAND OF HELL'.
Yeah, max subweapons is a good idea. There is one shop in there (you'll know it when you see it), but it's best to go in there with a VERY GENEROUS supply of shuriken and bombs.
The tombstone teleporter room is terrible; I used to have a whole diagram of it drawn out so I knew where to go, but I think I lost it :/ DC's LP should be an all right guide though.

Well right now I'm starting on Maze of Galious (again thanks to DC's walkthrough) the PC remake's neat cause naramura made a tileset for it thats pretty awesome.
As for the Hell Temple, maybe I'll give it another go. But first I gotta max out all my other weapons, the only one I have max offhand is the ninja stars.
I completed all the steps except the last couple, because the mural in the Chamber of Extinction isn't showing up. And yes, I beat that boss a while back. Should I not have?

Hell Temple is a great way to go berserk instantly. After i finally beat this place, i was nearly ripe for some therapy.

you don't need to read the tombstone.you can into giant's head when you killed chamber of extinction boss.(to make the coffin empty)

Cave Story is way more linear than La-Mulana, and La-Mulana is vague and unforgiving.

I figured it out! You need to beat all eight Guardians before you can do the Hell Temple.
Now, my next task will be to figure out how to get past the third room, dear God in Heaven.
