@58dhart Be strong brother. Its sounds like your daughter knows her daddy loves her and he's got her back-no matter what. I have a daughter too and I know exactly what you feel. Funny how things change when you go from being a boy to being a man with responsibilities.
This song must have been so important for him to sing. I wish he had the courage to make better choices with his life but I can say with absolute certainty his life was not in vain. He continues to touch lives.

@AngryJO84 good thot, but seriously, fuck the OG shit and 'baby daddy' that....how do u expect to break free from all these damn stereotypes if u keep living up to them. you are an individual, your own person, who has so much to offer this world. You can be whatever you want to be, but you certainly do not need to end up stuck behind this fence. Be a child of the earth, not the ghetto....
@mixedbreed19 um okay, thanks for your words of wisdom, but i didnt think it was all that deep. I also dont think i need to change my views or the way i choose to word my thoughts. -----god bless
@AngryJO84 um okay, thanks for your words of sarcasm, but I didnt think it was all that 'OG'. I also dont think it's wrong to explore life on your own, instead of it always, somehow relating back to tha ghetto. Most people get out of tha ghetto...in mind and body. But hey, I'm not telling or forcing you to do anything. It was just constructive criticism...........ah well
@mixedbreed19 dude------ you took a comment i posted that was light hearted and turned it into me living in the ghetto, and put a "lable" on what who you think i am. With that being said, contrustively speaking----cussing to prove a point sets the wrong tone when you preach to the choir--God Bless
@AngryJO84 dude dont get soft now. OMG, I was aggressive! Anyways, I made a comment for you to move past the ghetto. I never made fun of you and called you a ghetto child. You created that label on your own and ran with it. Plus when I 'swore', it was "fuck the ghetto nonsense, express your individual self". Not "fuck you". I DO keep it real dude. Hence, the call for expression of the individual self. I head seminars for youth in need of assistance. Plus u already ruined it with that 'OG' crap..
@AngryJO84 There's just so many young dumbasses (my peers) who would listen to the likes of Gil Scott Heron, miss the entire friggin message, throw morals out the window, like with everything else in life, and call it gangster, just cause it sounds like it would be a 'good track to sample' for rapping on....and they call it respect lol. Ghandi always said 'be a part of the change you would like to see'. From my experience, these youths dont care watsoever, and you gotta break thru hard. Like Gil
My favorite Gil Scott-Heron song of all-time. Showed another side of him. Such beautiful electronic piano and flute playing. Played this when my precious little girl was born.;-) Must find the music for this gem. Thanks so much for posting!!!!!
Thank you Mr. Gil Scott-Heron, for your making the world aware of the hatred that exist in America. Just to think things haven't change much, just people places and things. Your lyrics brought a conscioussness to the settlers of America, the victims and the captives. God bless you, now you can rest.
@TONYBCONSCIOUS Tony B, I know this sounds a bit nutty. I used to hang out with her Dad in the 1980s in NYC and Philly and would read his Tarot cards. After he died, I pulled the (Ace of Swords) in asking how he was. At risk of being presumptuous, if they believe in this stuff, I'd like to suggest they look out for "luminary" experiences of their Dad if they have not had them already especially when they first wake up in the AM Thanks. Nina
WOW this is my 1st time ever hearing this one. It's the ultimate shout out to a daughter from her daddy. So peaceful and very very touching to say the least.....every girl should be so lucky as to experience this from her dad.
Rest easy now Mr. Heron, you can lay those troubles, and heavy heavy burdens down. Thanks so much for the great body of music and poetry you so graciously left for us all to enjoy!
Correction to the earlier Poster. Gil has four children: Gia Louise, (here) now 31, two Nia Kelly Heron, also in her 30s, Che Newton, who is 13 and a son, Rumal Rackly (age unknown). In a way all of us are his children. Sweet Jammin in Heaven Daddyo Create in Peace. You will always be loved.

This song reminds me soooo much of my own father. Thank you Gill for sharing your gift of word, and truth through music. You were loved more than you'll ever know.
What a man. His lyrics are so raw and potent and poetic. I hear this song and it tugs on my heart ...deep. What a gift his life was to this world. I send him some love wherever he is out there...
Dear Daddy, I know you loved me and the last time I saw you was so many many years ago. Say hello to Gil Scott , say hello to mummy & thank you for giving me LIFE.

I heard this song sang to me my whole life. Hearing this, of this great loss, I feel like I just lost the only part of my daddy that belonged to me...RIP Gil...
Heard the news today, RIP my brother. YOUR MUSIC WAS LIBERATING!!! Enjoy peace and tranquility sir, your music has brought us such feelings. Your biggest under-30-yr-old fan. Rtoriq.
IT SHOULD HAVE A INSTRUMENTAL TO THIS BEAT!! I LIKE MR GIL SCOTT HERON STYLE AND NATURALNESS IN HIS MUSIC!! NOT TOO MANY LIKE HIM THAT KEEPS IT REAL TO THE BONE AND EXPRESSES HIS INNER BEINGS THRU MUSIC LIKE HE CAN. MOST MUSIC TODAY IS A BIG FABRICATION, JUST TO IMPRESS PPL. I SAY LEAVE IMPRESSING IN THE MOVIE INDUSTRY IT SHOULDNT MAKE ITS WAY TOO MUSIC
Two Dislikes...Anyone that dislikes this must be feeling-less and unloved, even if you do not have children....Could be a wife , girlfriend etc.....imagination of love !!!
Men of the world, LISTEN UP!!!! Tell you child or children what's in your heart so they will be able to tell their children. The sweetest love song from a father to his child, I so wish I had a dad like this but si la vie. I still have Gil.
I love this song, because my daddy always made sure we knew he loved us and our mother. I wish every child could be as fortunate as I was in growing up with a great Daddy. I miss him so much.
Love this guys music. had the pleasure of meeting him many a time since I worked where his music was distributed. Thanks for posting this (even tho I already own the CD)
to listen to this song hurt's.cause me and my wifw have or problems.but my babys mean everthing to me.believe me they are the reason why i breath.daddy loves u.know matter what happens.
Your Daddy love's you, is very special song it is one my all time favorites hits,
I ask Gil years ago in Jazz club in DC what made him write this song, and he told me no matter what you and your wife or going through in life, no matter what you have done in the past, you can never do no wrong in your little girls eyes.and thats what inspired him to write this song. TRUE Statement. We Love you Brother Gill, keep fighting the good fight from Bro English, Dallas, Texas.
@95SOUTHDC --unfortunately, Gil is wrong. I was a little girl and our daddy made me and my sisters lives hell. He was a rolling stone and we despised him for that and his 'women' and their offspring made life a hot mess.
Daddys CAN do wrong in their little girls' eyes and it can haunt the child and destroy their lives later as they try to understand and 'fix' the messed up pockets of their childhoods. KNOW THIS. Honor and integrity MATTER. If you love your kids ACT like it. All the time.
your daddy loves you ,your daddy loves his girl-- as we rise like the phenix bird from the ashes of hates destructive veiws, we began to reincarnate into the indestructible creation we have always been and will always be,as the ATOMS SWIRL,God the originals, prepare to send and onslaught of trillions into existences greater and more righteous than ever, Gods eternal and everlasting ,who or what can destroy the impossible?
he's back,,,,saw an interview with him on BBC ,,,,
he looks ok.....better than when i saw him live 10 years ago.....i think he's gonna be ok...i pray so...what the fuck was the point of putting him in Rykers Island? ...disgrace
Sadly, intravenous drugs, etc, have taken a very serious toll on Brother Gill. Unsure if he can put together those rapid-fire intelligible thoughts the way he did in the past. Good luck finding brother and getting something cogent from him.
damn,, what a song,, i love my baby,, por ella me quite,, ella es lo unico que me queda,, y este song,, habla de mi!!!!!!!!! que lindo.. thanks, gill..
When I hear this I think of my son and his daughters and how much he loves Shaolin, Shonee and Nahanna. Gil thanks for sharing so many wonderful bits and pieces of yourself with us!
All of the comments on here are so inspiring. Thank you all for sharing your light and picking up another when they needed some positive energy. This is something very rare on Youtube and all of you should be proud of yourselves because you represent the under represented best of humanity. Peace.
God Bless Your Father! My wife and I are having some major marital problems but my 6 yr old daughter is the light of my live, Daddies Love They Little Girls & Boys.
Hey wsanders787, four years studying journalism and you still don't know that 'alot' is not a word. No wonder American journalism is the worst in the developed world.
Inccidentally, this song pisses me off very much... There are alot of black sons like myself who move through life making mistakes for lack of guidance from the "one" male influence that's supposed to give you direction... I went to the Marines and am about to finish a degree in Journalism, but the path could have been a hell of alot easier with the man-lessons needed to navigate life.. Sometimes, I wish mom had been knocked up by another dude who was not wrapped up in his own destruction.

It pisses you off because you didn't have a father? Looks like you mother did a sufficient enough job to get you to where you are now. If you Mom did have someone else you would not be the man you are now, would you.
If Bill Cosby and Barak are never given credit for anything else, they should be credited with pointing out the fact that we as a people can not hold on to traditional notion of our past oppression in this country being the crutch that holds our people down. Brothers need to take a accountability for the seeds they're planting in the form of these children born out of wedlock with no moral or financial base to build strong and well adjusted members of our society.
Dont waste your time with anger. Be damned sure that your his ghost will come to visit you. Your anger invites them. Be better than you dad ever could be, that's the only way to break the generational curse. BTW do YOU know why he didnt stay around. Dont become pieces of that man.
wsanders787, I understand your comment. If a person has not been through the emotional struggle, they simple will not understand. But my advice to you is simply, don't be bitter to anyone, forgive and move on with YOUR life! peace brother! Hit me up, I have something for you.
This song hits home, more than anyone knows. O' my goodness ~passjay~, thank you for healing me with this share, and Yah bless you, for following His lead. Powerful post for me. Thank you, hakanTCM. 5*****!!!!!
I dedicate this song to all of the father's who couldn't be more involved in their children's lives because of a system that only values them, as well as their children through dollars and cents, as well as the lack of faith of those who support them in thier selfish endeavors. Don't worry, because some day, we will all be free. A freedeom through the knowledge of self, identified through our Creator's eye's and not of our fellow woman and man of the world...
One of my favorite songs... So true and with such a feeling... Gil, you'll never be forgotten.. You'll always live through your music...

Father's Day is this coming Sunday, and yes, it IS a very appropriate song for the ages. Although I lost my father to heart failure at age 17, there isn't a day that I don't think about him; he left the family when I was much younger. I first heard this in 1974 at age 15; I've heard this song many times on "specialty" radio shows heard on weekends only; most notably on urban contemporary stations who play this on their "Rhythm Revue" programs.

If I had a baby girl I would play her this song everytime when she falls asleep!

95SOUTHDC 1 year ago

Sadly, intravenous drugs, etc, have taken a very serious toll on Brother Gill. Unsure if he can put together those rapid-fire intelligible thoughts the way he did in the past. Good luck finding brother and getting something cogent from him.
