@taristeach2 well not many people speak it. Hardly anyone teaches it here in america, and it was def dwindling when clannad broke onto the scene; people didnt like hearing some famous songs sung in that language. i would think only some in ireland, hopefully more, speak it, and a variation of it in scotland. but that isnt alot, esp compared to other languages that are spoken around the world.
Well i used to listen to this perhaps 25 years ago or so and just remembered it, i was expecting the song to be a bit of a let down now (as is usually the case) but WOW this is still so good.
Whats it all about?! Cad é a bfhuil sé fá dtaobh de?
Its actually about a great night out - a session that goes on till dawn. Its not night, its not morning, the high light that would be in the moon ( or faded light of dawn) roughly. You know those nights where you dont know wheather its day or night! Ciarán told me that.
Wish I knew how to speak my ancestral lingo-my g g gfather was fluent-he emigrated to NZ in 1874 aged 15 and didnt know how to speak english at all.He learnt though and how to read and write.Irish should be made compulsory if it isnt in Ireland already.I have loved Clannad since I first heard them aged 14-I love the electric double bass-they are such good musicians on top of Maires vocals, which are angelic
@mike666nz Down in the Irish Free State it is still a statuatory requirement to have attained fluency in the Gaelic if you want any civil service job!
@woodkerne wow!Of course I didnt know that.It is good that people learn their language, but of course English is the world lingua Franca and of the most practical use.I think it is discriminatory to rule someone out from a job just because they dont or cant speak Irish. If I tried to learn it even with a teacher at my age it would take years.I dont think any language should be imposed on people as that is not choice
@woodkerne -It is a bit cheeky that it is a prerequisite as it should , of course, be on merit. Some Maoris here want their language imposed as compulsory at school- but they themselves are not learning it, though they get shitloads of taxpayer handouts(along with handouts for so many things it isnt funny!).It is the insidious virus and plague of political correctness
AyeYirma..On the contrary the Irish Language is NOT one of the most difficult to learn and is not Dying out!! There are now hundreds of Irish speking schools axross Ireland where the young ones are taught and indeed have to conduct their lessons in Irish only...More and more people have opted for this option when their children start school...this was not an option when i was at school, irish language was one for hour a day.!!!
@soulmusicmad I have sent an email to Pat Carey TD asking him to establish a number of Gaelcreche . The idea is to teach them young and they have it for life. I got this idea because my daughter moved to France 18 months ago and her 2 children went to creche and they are now fluent in french. Let me know what you think and perhaps you will support it.
@pah550 Young children see no difficulty learning a language unlike adults , they just get on with it and dont even think about it . They are now going to school and are just as fluent in french as the french students .I was listening to a radio programme where an ambassador was being interviewed and he said he was moved 5 times during his career and said his children could speak 5 languages as a result . Does that answer your question .
i wish i could learn irish. it sounds so cool but the spelling doesn't make sense with how it's said!!! lol it reminds me a bit of French in that way ;-P

it's sad that Gaelic is a dwindling language. It's so beautiful, especially when Clannad weaves it with their music.

plenty of languages don't make sense and the fact that irish is so non-phonetic is a testament to it's age (:
it goes back i believe 4,000BC. one of the oldest and most difficult languages.
unfortunately it's slowly dying out :(
