The most that scene does is give us the audience an open ending. Whether he's alive or not its up in the air. But he really was confirmed dead.

The ending was open to interpretation for create many and many discussions about it and, of course, SUNRISE loves that. But in my opinion if they decide let Lelouch alive then he is an as*hole screwing Suzaku up turning him in the new Zero, "dying" in front of his sister and surviving after he promised to die in Zero Requiem.

And if u don't believe me, i even watched the original ending in japanese, lelouch wasn't shown. And i'm talking about back when it was airing in japan and i was watching online.
As I've said before, he should be well and truely dead. C.C was "talking" to nobody, just to the sky while thinking of Lelouch. IF they bring him back, it would be 3 years late, and fanservice. It's been confirmed that in R3 he wouldn't be the main character, and set around the rebellion. In Deathnote, Light DID kind of save the world. Thousands of criminals died, and the years after that(since nobody was sure that Kira was dead), the crime rate remained minimal.
But I guess cc could have given him her code at some point after the war, and he did say he was going to fulfill the contract with cc and he could have lied to suzaku, and he could have found a place to hide, with the help of jeramia because it was kinda weird for jeramia to let him die like that. Ps the new serie takes place when lulu is alive

despite the fact that Lelouch-Sama is alive i do hope he doesn't appear. since i prefer he'd live somewhere far away peacefully. he's had enough pain and suffering already so i hope no one will take that away from him. i have mixed feelings with this new project but i will still watch it because Code Geass creators has never failed us when it comes to creating awesome stories. =)

@statiux actually if u watched the Japanese ending of the show it showed lelouche's face half covered and it's him cuz of the purple eyes and also cc was speaking to him at the end. Also those with the code are immortal and lelouche gained the code at the end

@Needless957 That's the idea the creators wanted to leave in the ending. They wanted you to view it from the perspective of everyone else in the story: that it looked like Lelouch was dead. Still, knowing more than the typical character, we can see he probably isn't. I've had this debate before, and there are a ton of subtle hints in the story that point toward Lelouch taking a Code of his own and becoming an immortal before staging his death. Even the title (R2) is a hint.

They said his body was in Damocles, and the Code only prevents mortal deaths so even if he had it (which he didn't) the sun killed him.

As I've said before, he should be well and truely dead. C.C was "talking" to nobody, just to the sky while thinking of Lelouch. IF they bring him back, it would be 3 years late, and fanservice. It's been confirmed that in R3 he wouldn't be the main character, and set around the rebellion. In Deathnote, Light DID kind of save the world. Thousands of criminals died, and the years after that(since nobody was sure that Kira was dead), the crime rate remained minimal.

despite the fact that Lelouch-Sama is alive i do hope he doesn't appear. since i prefer he'd live somewhere far away peacefully. he's had enough pain and suffering already so i hope no one will take that away from him. i have mixed feelings with this new project but i will still watch it because Code Geass creators has never failed us when it comes to creating awesome stories. =)

Well, Suzaku, C.C., and Orange know; and Nunally and Kallen figured it out near the end.
Either way, the Zero Requiem REQUIRES that no one knows how good a guy he truly is, which is precisely why his death and his character is so tragic.
It really is a fantastic story. Best damn thing I ever saw from any modern anime.

Neither Ichirō Ōkouchi (writer) nor Gorō Taniguchi (director) have gone on record stating that Lelouch died. @Needless957 That's the idea the creators wanted to leave in the ending. They wanted you to view it from the perspective of everyone else in the story: that it looked like Lelouch was dead. Still, knowing more than the typical character, we can see he probably isn't. I've had this debate before, and there are a ton of subtle hints in the story that point toward Lelouch taking a Code of his own and becoming an immortal before staging his death. Even the title (R2) is a hint.
