@Tait011 well the air flowing over the exhaust via the front bumper grilles will naturally cool it down to a certain extent, it depends what application its for. if the car just sits there and blows flames all day then id imagine tyre wear isnt on the builders mind. but if its a track toy then natural air flow will assist cooling, also shared with the fact that if it is on a track the tyres will need to be as warm as possible anyway :)

@santamario99 in the Mclarens case i was making a point that suggests the shorter the exhaust the better, not the positioning. Obviously with a longitudional V8 the exhausts will have to exit though the wing behinds the wheels, but in an inline 4's case, with the manifold being at the front of the engine, the front bumper is a good idea. sorry for any confusion.

The SLR McLaren as well, not to mention the pipe loops around under the car making the piping longer. Plus those are all very high horsepower engines which actually needs to get the exhaust gasses out quickly, but they still have enough back pressure.

SLR and F1 cars have them because they have at least 8 cylinders and a heap of power. a in line 4 or other in line engines need a certain exhaust length and resistance to accive the desired engine power. shorten the pipe and it will lack power in some rpm stages.

As is, it's just loud and annoying.... A proper exhaust setup will net more gains then just a straight pipe out the side. Excluding a cat or restrictive chambered muffler(straight through flows best and optimizes air velocity, thus increasing top end hp).

For fuck sake, that is wrong. Air velocity is what matters and it is dependent on backpressure, sometimes more backpressure is required to increase air velocity, hence more piping can actually net you more hp gains !
