  • I follow the fire, not the smoke

  • I have A. Now on hold at my local library. hopefully will be in less than a week from now. Will AP Documentary help explain why this clip happened? I saw a little bit of a really old interview online of MS talking about this clip and it said that he realized (not exact words just how I remembered it) he had become this characater too much or something. Did FFC (director) basically just egg MS on to get drunk for the "effect" and then the alcohol too over past MS's control?

  • Can anyone tell me where to find the movie/documentary. I want to watch it as a whole before I watch this movie or after it maybe as I found this clip when I was searching about MS without really meaning too and now I am curious about this movie. (never watched it before) had no clue it existed before a few years ago as I was born the year after it got nominated for an award as a movie and have more awareness of CS and Emilio than their "old man" :)

  • martins been into the tigers blood.

  • your wife... home... car!

  • @KlumzyThePunk you should be glad that such a good thing is being recognized. try being more optimistic rather than pretentious and bitchy

  • @sourxxjane Implying it wasn't mean to be pretentious.

  • @KlumzyThePunk I probably could be a fan of AN but i was born in the wrong era. Is this community you speak of the show starring a bunch of community college students etc?

  • @AnneLiesveld I was born in 93 and this is one my favorite movies ever. It doesn't matter what era your born into, you can still like something from whatever era.

  • @KlumzyThePunk I guess I just meant Klumzy that I had never heard of it enough to be a fan of it. Definitely am shook up by watching MS in this clip. :( YUCKO! Hard to watch him in such definite agony and heartbreaking pain! (both physically and knowing what he talks about his emotional health was like online in interviews about this time.

  • @KlumzyThePunk I am fan of community and Parks and recreation but since Apocolypse now aired the same year I was born (actually the year before) I wouldn't necessarily know of it.

  • Martin Sheen is a great actor, don't get me wrong. But he's not acting here! lol

  • @sinbysin666 Yeah they probably could have gotten some random drunk dude out of a bar or off the street to do that...but in my opinion the tighty-whities just make it worse >.<

  • That's the Sheen gene right there!

  • Bi-winning!

  • Why is this great "acting" but a drunken Hasselhoff eating a hamburger is not?

  • @bobslob69 because this was for and in a film.

  • way better than apocolypse now

  • @gabrielschembri thanks, i do what i can; i try

  • @gabrielschembri community :)

  • Thanks Community

  • Thumbs up if community brought you here.

  • I had no idea this even existed until they kept mentioning it on Community. Wow. The real title is "Hearts of Darkness".

  • I had no idea this even existed until they kept mentioning it on Community. Wow.

  • This is amazing.

  • Fuck that mirror

  • IT MEANT WHAT?!

  • I hate charlie sheen for what hes done to his father's legacy

  • Wow, and all these years I thought Martin Sheen was just acting in that scene. Turns out it was for real.

  • @Nakor420ish yeah, he took this role VERY seriosuly

  • Martin Sheen wins movies

  • Art.

  • "I fought him like a tiger" what is it with the sheen's and tigers?

  • @dragonflypics Watch the documentary...

  • I fought him like a tiger.

  • Winning?

  • I wanna play Captain Willard (sheens part) in the remake!!!!!!

  • "it meant............."

  • He's obviously bleeding tiger's blood.

  • @Tamaslammer Well at 1:50 listen to what he says. lmao

  • why the fuck wasn't Martin Sheen nominated for Apocalypse Now?...

  • i can't believe he never won an oscar

  • @Angelo9206 Probably because it was not acting... but real. Ha!

  • He said recently that he was psychotic when they shot this scene.

  • Profound.

  • I've never watched films being made. I guess I always imagined things happened like how they end up on film. But this is wild. No music or anything. Just them , with people talking. I couldn't do it. Them talking would distract me.

  • 1:50 "I fought him like a tiger"

...probably from the Tiger Blood running through his veins!

  • @malathis0

    DUH.... WINNING!

  • @malathis0

There is also a scene where someone on the boat sees a tiger in the jungle and goes apeshit. A lot of the things Charlie has been saying are influenced by this movie. I think there is more to his obsession than just the film itself or the fact that his father is in it. He went through a lot of trauma. He was eleven and his father almost died during the making of this film.

  • THIS IS PROFOUND!

  • @sessohiyakowa No...

  • Martin Sheen is truly America's greatest actor... he just never caught that mega role

  • I liked the added playmate scene once I realised it was about exploiting youth for obscene purposes. Men are exploited for war, women for lust. As well, these women are trying to tell the men about their lives and how disgusted they feel about having to model, but the men don't listen, even though Carrie talks about feelings that could easily by applied to a war. It doesn't even matter to Chef that his girl's not Miss December, only that he can make her look like Miss December.

  • The Illusive Man: Before Cerberus, he was a Captain in Vietnam. Apparently.

  • Copolla deserves a medal for putting up with Brando, Hopper and Sheen. Three primadonnas and Brando was just insane.

  • loving the cut-offs @0:03

  • Martin Sheen is plain fantastic in this movie.

  • Like father like sone, If only Charley could figure out how to make his drunken rants part of his job like his father did.

  • @BeerExpedition men men men men manly men men men

  • @BeerExpedition ... Have you seen Two and a Half Men?

  • Jaysus H. I thought someone got a video of Charlie in his hotel room before he was arrested today in NYC!

  • I did this exact thing saturday night but I received a much different reaction.

  • Young Illusive Man.

  • @nuttex I ALWAYS thought he would be the perfect Illusive Man!

  • He had a Heart Attack has well!

  • he was completely drunk or maybe a little drunk.

But he´s one of the best actor in Hollywood.

    regards from Spain.

  • i'm so confused. was he really drunk, or was that for a scene?

  • @cheerluv262 Both. He gave 100% of his vulnerability and made it as real as it could get, actual drunkenness and letting go, while staying anchored to his character, and everyone on set was uncomfortable or scared. He had a heart attack making this film. Raw, and no kidding around for these scenes.

  • @ehcmier I have a really wierd question but since I am alot younger than when this movie came (actually not alot but just enough born a few years after it came out) Was Martin Sheen required to be drunk for this movie or was he just having such a hard time with not being drunk that he chose to be? (if that makes sense) It seems to me like talked about needing to get out of control to get some stuff figured out but it seems like FFC (director) allowed it too.. Maybe I am making no sense?

  • I was expecting a throw-up at 1.34..

  • This is a great film but man, this had to be the only film complicated for the crew to make, let alone them feeling comfortable and stress free while on set

  • What a powerful movie

  • that is scary dude to to end up like that

  • its amazing how everything in Apocalypse Now is filmed in the Philippines.

  • wows, man.the resemblance to his son is just enormous

  • obviously nowerdays this would not be allowed correct.

I suppose in a way if apocalypse now was made nowerdays it would not of had the great cinematography and impact that it had in this film because of health and safety and because of the amount of CGI we have.

  • Add to that, also must have a "Michelle Rodriguez" female character thrown in as well and other "political correctness" bullcrap. What the hell actually I think the whole movie would be done in bluescreen if it was done nowadays.

  • RIP Sam Bottoms

  • how did he die?

  • Alcohol in his system may have been the driving force that elicited Martin Sheen's performance. However, there are many cues that indicate there was more than one drug involved.

  • I just saw this movie in my film class today...Glad someone uploaded this scene, it's amazing.

  • This is me every nite!

  • Ha ha.... me too!

  • @Snotra LOL.

  • Very sad and painful moment to watch.

I only knew the story that he got a heart attack on the set. I just saw the interview Graham Norton had with Martin Sheen and he told the first thing his wife said when she got to the hospital was 'It is only a movie'. Puts everything quite back in perspective.

  • It's not just a movie, it's a trip!

  • i know a guy that gets drunk and does this kind of stuff every weekend. like almost the exact same thing.

  • Yeah that guy is me.

  • i agree in some ways that the redux edition does effect the flow of the movie.. i also think this is because it seems to include more good experiences in the film and takes away from the phycological abuse of the experience of going up river and the unpleasent experience of Vietnam and the horrible events.. they seem to have some fun in the redux which i think is something that they would not have had on such a mission

  • I like Redux. It's richer. The French Plantation was alright. The only added sequence that pissed me off was the when the men got layed by the playboy bunnies. Otherwise it was a good experience and it still felt crazy, especially towards the end.

  • I agree with you, sandyman002. Aside from the chopper/bunny scene, I think I prefer the Redux to the original; I think that if anything it adds to the insanity, rather than diluting it.

    Either version is brilliant, though.

  • I just thought of a perfect opening line for Sheen when he played General Lee in "Gettysburg." In the morning scene when Lee steps out of his tent, he looks around a bit, then mutters, "Gettysburg . . . SHIT!"

  • lmao

  • Cant stand his munchkin voice.

  • This gives me chills, brilliant!!

  • This is what film making is all about.

  • Martin Sheen is one the most underrated actors in Hollywood. He never plays the same character twice. He's just the best.

  • @bowdayshus - He should have easily won an Oscar for the role of Cpt. Willard... considering he was a last minute replacement.. he captured that character perfectly

  • "Apocalypse Then"

  • Martin appeared on a English programme called Friday night with jonathan ross. A big chat show programme in England..... Anyway they discussed this moment so i thought i'd check it out. Quite sad moment, Sheen said that he feels quite ashamed when he see's that moment because it's like he is watching a different person. Quite interesting, if any of you guys are interested in this might want to check that out. I thought he gave a good interview... Nice guy!

  • same here ive never seen the film so i didnt know the scene he was talking about but now i understand

  • I understand Martin Sheen's pain in this scene. The plight of man is a complex journey.

  • Sorry if the action isn't there enough for you...Apocalypse Now is more than that.

I will agree that Redux, with its added scenes, ruins it. They should have remained on the cutting room floor.

  • I prefer Redux to the original cut. I think it adds even more political depth, especially during the scenes at the French plantation.

  • A agree it adds more, but to me it ruined the flow of the movie. Thats just my opinion.

So did the scene where they reunited with the dancing playboy bunnies. I just thought that was plain lame, I was glad it ended up on the cutting room floor.

  • I haven't seen the original yet but I think when I see it I will be a bit disappointed because I have already seen the redux version and all the added scenes that I quite enjoyed, even though it is a very long movie it all added to the experience.

Also, I've learned that it is almost impossible to get the original version in Australia, unless you want a shitty VHS copy and have a VHS player.

  • Hey, tgi. It just so happens that I have a first edition copy of the original theatrical cut on the film on DVD. It also includes editional footage of the destruction of the Kurtz compound w/ commentary by Francis Ford Coppola.

  • Apocalypse now was a lot better

  • The real crime in cinema is that it doesn't ALWAYS push itself this far.

  • Looks like a typical Saturday night for Charlie Sheen.

  • like father like son

  • It's strange that they both have BIG vietnam movies in their resumes.

    Apocalypse VS Platoon!

    I think the dad's a better actor.

  • and they both did narrations in their v-n films!

  • Michael Herr narrated Apocalypse Now.

  • Did Michael Herr speak the narration or did he just write it? It's sounds like Martin Sheens' voice!

  • yeah !

    except thats Martin Sheen!

  • There's Charlie hanging in his nutsack in that banana hammock...

  • Most of the this sequence was actually used by Francis Copolla in the final cut of Apocalypse Now Marin Sheen had a break down an a hart attack shortly after the filming of this movie . He is amazing as an actor. In this sequence he put is dark side on display absolutely great!

  • He had the heart attack during the filming, not afterward.

  • ok.. thanks... he is a great actor anyway ;)

  • HEEYAH!

  • absolutely hilarious! you fukers! I...i-i...i...I broke my arm!

  • Actually what he said was, "I have a broken heart....."

  • invasion of privasheen

  • holy shit, that's just... amazing

  • asshole

  • How is it celebrating drunken behavior? They only filmed it because he was having a breakdown on the set.

  • tazzy5. My Sister gave me that book Christmas day 2008, yesterday, and I read 122 pages last night.Have to get the Documentary. Saw it years ago on a grainy vhs. Dennis Hopper was Trippin. R.I.P. Sam Bottoms

  • You should read the book Notes by Eleanor Coppola. I don't know if it's still in print, but it's one of the best books written about the film business, under the umbrella of making "Apocalypse Now." Absolutely fantastic, and you learn all about the details that went on behind scenes like this one.

  • excellent, thanks alot for this information, i appreciate it, i will definitely look into this immediately.

  • The only full video of this documentary I could find online is at the chinese youtube site " youku(DOT)com " Just go to that site and search hearts of darkness in the search bar just like on youtube and you will see a video with a picture of Marlon Brando and it's 92 minutes long AND ENGLISH.

  • Thanks for the info.

I'm trying to download it from ThePirateBay, but it's got a 2 week - 4 week+days eta it's SO SLOW. I'd be glad to abort that torrent if what you're saying is the real deal, hell yes!

I'll let you know if this Chinese thing works out

  • wow!

  • Have FUCKIN WHAT out??? Chaotic spiritual state? Shit, man, you were fucked up like a football bat.

  • This is a great documentary.

  • yes it is!!! it's amazing!

  • I had this documentery years ago and lent it to a friend....never saw it again. I would tell anybody, if you haven't seen this...get it! It's incredible what Francis had to deal with while making this classic movie!

  • could you upload it somewhere? like megaupload or something? I'd be really interested in seeing this documentary if possible

  • I remeber buying this thing on VHS tape via Amazon I was blown away.

  • i still have it on vhs.

  • Jim Morrison was originaly casted for this character.

  • No, that is not true. It was Harvey Keitel and they started with him but fired him cause he wasn't good enough...

  • it is really criminal that this isn't in print right now.

  • Yes it is. This documentary was released on DVD on Tuesday, November 20, 2007.

  • I do this every time I drink Tequilla!

  • Having seen the whole docu I must say I like it better than the movie! For real!

  • martin sheen is either a really good actor or just fucking hammered!

  • Chaotic spiritual state == I was pissed off my tits.

  • On the commentary for Apocalypse Now, Coppola says that he intentionally mocked, provoked and taunted Sheen in order to get this performance out of him. He also said that he did not stop the scene and get a doctor for Sheen after he slashed his hand.

I guess it was worth it.

  • Man, all I did for my 36th was go to Cracker Barrel. What a ripoff.

  • LOL

  • The documentary is almost as good as the movie. It's great how Coppola is going crazy having to deal with Brando and Hopper.

  • I just got it today from Amazon Marketplace. I can't wait to watch it.

  • where is the rest of the movie?!!!!

  • This is the saddest and funniest thing I've ever seen.

  • LOL, true.
