not to be rude, but I don't like the recent version of this classic. (the movie version)..THIS, this is the good one! everybody watch this one please! this one is the amazing one =)
I have always loved Jeremy Irons, so when I learned that he starred in this series, which is based off one of the best novels I've read ever, I was ecstatic. Thanks!
This is one of the greatest books I've ever read, and the series seems to be doing an amazing job so far. Thank you so much for the upload! This makes me very happy! :D
I'm not sure if either the series or the film captures the brilliant feeling of the text, but since a lot of it is included here (like Charles' monologues) this certainly wins. For looks, I'll take the film.
I watched this series about 5 times straight and still can't resist watching it again! It is something I can't ever forget. If would like to hear the soundtrack it's on my channel.
D0nalF0ley iam looking forward to this 2/3 thru the book and was at the pub when the series was on the telly! Read the other novels in last couple of months and been saving this til last. Funny motherfucka aint he Waugh?!! Really funny, glad I saved them til now!
To think this was an ITV production. Anyone watching that piece of Cowell obsessed shit today wouldn't recognise it from the channel that made this and many other classic dramas.
@Vennegoor10 I think you're right. Perhaps one reason for the lack of quality today is too many TV channels. Back in 1981 a good series could be assured of an audience of millions. It just goes to show the truth of the old saying 'More means worse'.
@wwwHOOPCAPITALcom No,it is T.V. miniseries. It is a brilliant adaptattion of Waugh`s slightly autobiographical novel(John Mortimer is the screenwriter.).
This mini series is still the standard that all mini series should be. You can't get this sort of quality anymore since trash has taken over the airwaves these days
I don't know what it is but I only ever seem to find myself watching this while marginally to extremely drunk! I do hope this doesn't make anyone lower their estimation of my appreciation of this superlative drama.
Thank you for this. Like Charles Ryder waking up at 39, recalling the days at Brideshead, seeing this series again after all this time from 1981, wakes in me fond memories of the time I first saw it. It puts me into a state of nostalgic and intense reflection of a sweater time gone by. It almost make the last 28 years, of techno-theocratic nastiness, fade to black and I realize my own negligent waste of them. (When I first saw this I was an atheist resident in a Catholic University college.)
has anyone uploaded the new version of the brideshead revisited? This original version is yes, masterpiece. But its like watching serious charlie chaplin drama in the quiet movie era... sorry guys...
@Wisterialodge: (I like your chosen monniker; is it a reference to the Sherlock Holmes story?) and like you, I would like to thank donalfoley for posting this truly great TV series.
@DrZenith Thanks for letter. Yes its from Holmes, but my wife thought I picked it up from Desperate Housewives, I did not know what she was talking about
@Tallyhofox Your name suggests you hunt.If so,perhaps you can enlighten us as to why the red coats are refered to as "pink"?I had been told a story by a teacher that it had to do with being "bloodied".
@Mllelaurel thank you for the info-it`s one of those little subtleties that add to the appreciation-for instance the changing of Charles` Van Gogh to a Gauguin in his rooms.
@lizclegg You don't know what your talking about. There's a reason why they made it into a series, and thats because Evelyn Waughs prose narrative and exploration of a theme are masterly. There are some snobbish aspects of Waugh which are not laudable, and I agree with his own assessment that there are too many gluttonous references to food in the novel because of rationing. But the pensive exploration of melancholy in the novel is unsurpassed. No intelligent reader could think otherwise.
@lizclegg You're entitled not to like the book; but Bridehead can't be labelled 'mediocre'; leaving aside the story line, Waugh's use of language is superbly controlled and his depiction of character masterly.
Jeremy Irons' lugubrious tones mould my brain, ready for the story ahead. His narration is superb throughout. I can't understand how he manages to make me feel instantly sympathetic without making the character seem piteous (fantastic writing, of course, but his performance is captivating).
Yes! I have an old cassette tape of him reading 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' and the way he speaks... It's almost like he's making love to the words, or tasting them, savoring them. Sometimes I just listen to it for the pleasure of hearing him read. Imagine being able to sit around after dinner and listen to him read a novel, the way Lady Marchmain sometimes reads to the family in the film. Mmm... pure pleasure.
@QOTSAgerbils I remember seeing this awhile back and I instantly felt sympathetic towards him as well. he does have a lovely voice but to me you feel for him because of the eccentric people he ends up being around. you kind of wonder how a seemly normal person could handle themselves in that situation and thus relate. he seems to be the voice of the audience in that way.
Thanks very very much for uploading this great BBC series. Watched it for the first time about 20 years ago when I was still a teenager. Since then, I can't forget it. Thanks again.
Jeremy Irons gives a bravura performance. I can't believe they tried to re-make this (or 'The Great Gatsby' for that matter). Some things are so well done that there can be nothing added upon re-make.
@WAYSMEANS I thought the remake was alright. I mean matthew goode even looks like a young jeremy irons. I heard him say something to the affect that he and jeremy irons also similar in their awful voices and that kind of tckd me off. I like jeremy irons voice. there is nothing wrong with it.
Hi, thanks for your comments. I'll be posting more of the first episode over the next few days and then the remaining episodes over the next few weeks.
This is the definitive version. The recent movie is a piece of junk.

I believe it's because the jackets were originally made by Thomas Pink, a high-end tailor in 18th century London. So, they came to be called "pinks".

You''re welcome to think it overrated, but the book is on at least four
different lists, including Time and Modern Library, of the greatest English language novels of the 20th century. Even hanging around 80th,
that's not shabby.
