a CPU would need minutes to render one image like that.
with hardware raytracing at this speed it's a HUGE timesaver to render CGI. just think about it, ten minutes of video = 30*60*10 = 18000 frames. now multiply that with the CPU rendering time (say 10 minutes) and GPU rendering time (say 5 seconds a frame), you get four months of rendering time on CPU vs. one day of rendering on GPU.
sure, nobody renders on one CPU, but imagine how much energy this tech saves.
@69ajfly gpu is a graphics processor, cpu is the main all-purpose processor.
GF100 used to be the internal codename for the Fermi GPUs back in the day, now they're called GTX 400. gtx 280 is the last generation of geforce graphics cards.
in this video they compare how fast they can render an image on either GPU using a very resource-intensive method called raytracing which results in photorealistic imagery. needless to say, the GF100 is 2-3 times faster at that than the gtx 280.
this is the least most powerful of the series, theyre showing how much better it is than one of the best of the last generation. so do expect alot more from the other cards
@xamanto as everyone knows it doesn't make much difference if the numbers are low anyway. If it would be 1000 vs 3000 fps, that would be so amazing..!
I wonder how powerful our gpu's (if they're even still around) will be in 10 years.

THEY DIDNT SHOW THE GTX RENDERING !

@xamanto
what is the diference between GPU and CPU?
it says for the title of the video GF100 vs gtx 280 is that just another video card?

in that low of a frame rate with that big of a difference, that is what i call b3z3rk3r

Only 3 times faster? I thought it would be 20 times faster! ^^

I agree, from the blurb you would almost have expected ray tracing in real time.

yeah Nvidia is also coming out with a Dual GTX 400 later this year. That's going to be really powerful

if u had some brain, u would understand, that THIS is a bench that needs so much graphical performance, that even a GTX 285 only gets up to 0,2 fps
