lol thats the echos from roaring camp,thats a shay locomotive it has a distinct 3 beat exhaust pattern, probly the dixiana,you can hear and see the smoke from ben lomond and scotts valley and on the west side closest to hiway 9.im kinda disapointed i wanted to see something wierd,but i do know of sighting and sounds in boulder creek area,my mom used to live right on the property that usesd to be the old mainlin station and rail yard, the back house used to be a conductor and brakemans bunk house
Where I took the video is near the top of the summit of highway 17, near Laurel, which is several miles (as the crow flies) from Roaring Camp. And the sounds were not coming from the south, where Roaring Camp is. They were coming from the east, down in the ravine on the SP grade, which was torn up in the '40's,
It was quite loud. It is difficult to convey in the video how loud it was due to the camera's ALC. As I said, it was loud enough for me to hear with my motorcycle running, my helmet on, and wearing earplugs under the helmet, so you can imagine it was pretty loud.
What you're hearing about is an abandoned railroad called the South Pacific Coast Railroad line, It was taken over by Southern Pacific in 1887. The Suntan Special (The train which you're hearing) ran through this line between San Jose and Santa Cruz took which came down the San Francisco Peninsula and took passengers straight to the beach. The service was disrupted by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. In 1940 the tracks were abandoned in that year. In 1942 the tunnels were dynamited.
the sounds from roarins camp echo pretty far cause of all the sandstone cliffs

if you were not having ear plugs and the motorcycle on then you would've lost your hearing

If it was a ghost train, it would be much louder due to your proximity to the old right of way.

Was this, by chance, filmed near Bear Mountain? Roaring Camp and Big Trees operates narrow-gauge steamers up and down the mountain there.

@CampJosa
That's a good guess, but nope. Bear Mtn. is, as you know, basically in Felton. This recording was captured just west of the summit, near Laurel.
