A rogue wave did not sink the ocean ranger. A large wave from the storm broke a portlight which then let water into the ballast control room. The water caused a malfunction in the ballast control panel. This lost in control over ballast lead to OR being capsized by the regular movement of waves. A wave only had to be 28 feet to hit the portlight and ballast control room on the OR.
