  • Scholars who record fleeting images, seen perhaps by thousands, and publish them for the millions of mankind in perpetuity, are intellectual heroes much as the scholars who discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls or dug up the Art of War recorded on bamboo, and preserved them for mankind.

  • I absolutely hate it when some loser sits in front of his tv and records it with his camcorder...

  • 0:42 - The crew of the Long Dong....

  • I've read about 3 rigs so far which sank because of portholes being smashed.

  • I boogy-board bigger waves than this.

  • The rogue waves must be caught and punished!

  • History Channel?

  • Surfers all over the world drooled on this one.

  • @6shnuggle6 They'd wet their laps another way at ?v=euWgjOhSqWA

500' high, 500mph? 152.4m high, 223.52mps. 34,746 tonnes of salt water per second per metre of coastline. 868 GigaWatts per metre of coastline. Roughly one Hiroshima bomb per 10 metres of coast per second.

Highest floor of your building, my ____. Boeing 737 at 500mph is about 1 GJ. 900 times that per metre of coast per second? Be west of the Catskill range.

  • .The measurement of any wave is from 'peak' - 'trough',the wave peaked out at 94 feet, being in pitch black is worse than being in daylight at sea,as you cannot see it coming, except for the white on top of each wave.

Imagine having the trawl down, acting like an anchor in such conditions, head up to the sea, standing forward, looking DOWNWARDS towards the stern,I used to love it like that.

  • I was a deep sea trawlerman in the early 1960's,I saw the first oil rig,the Sea Gem after it sank, becoming the first to sink.

I also trawled between Iceland & Northern Norway, where, during a hurricane force 12,at temperatures 60 degrees below zero, during the middle of winter, when any spray coming over the side immediately freezes on the ships upperworks,we recorded a 94 foot wave on the paper chart.

  • oil is a stable liquid thats in the earh keep on pumping the wells are going deeper the earth will grow in temperature we get more vulkcanos last years then we get less sun There you have you apocolypse even the GAS is very COLD that we pump out of it that,s the whole meaning of beeing greedy to earn lots of money and more destroy the earth its so easy to calculate that and nobody thinks of it There is even your whole bible story and maya in one few lines.WORLD MASTER RESET is coming. :)

  • Just got a response after 2 months have gone by from Madisonelectric.

You obviously have much culture and a refined education to express yourself so elequently!

Don't quite understand such hostility and the need for vulgarity here when we are talking about science, nature and facts. Perhaps you need to learn some manners??

By the way, my Father was in WWII since it looks as if you are a WWII fan, so you have insulted him by insulting me!! THAT WAS THE GREATEST generation.

  • WHY RECORD VIDEOS LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!! LOOKS LIKE A GOOD VID BUT A RETARD RUNNIN IT. SORRY BUT,, FOR REAL

  • I saw very talkative people.

  • Wow. Gotta love the amazing 1080p resolution and Digital THX sound of this video.

  • All these waves are made by Doctor Evil

  • no, the one in front is the same height, so its only the angle of the boat that suggests a 100 ft wave, look at the one in front, it shows that the wave is only 80ft at the most , bullshit!!!!!

  • they have had had 100 foot waves during massive storms throught history, they arent "rougue" waves..bouy markers in 1991 (off australia) and again in 2005 katrina had significant wave height ratings that translated to 105 foot waves..

  • I wasn't saying that oil rigs should not exist. I was only saying that we should NOT invest more money, time and effort into anymore than we have now. We are actually drilling more wells now then we were during the Bush years.

Just as we "advanced" from hunters/gatherers, than an agricultural society, than from using Whale oil, riding horse and buggies, etc., it is only a "natural progression" to "wean" ourselves OFF fossil fuels and MOVE INTO THE 21st century!!

  • @LisaScharin eat shit

  • @madisonelectronic.Posted something for the general comments here about your response to me and I was wondering what is wrong with you and why you felt the need to use vulgarity. Perhaps YOU are still living in the Hunter/gatherer era and have NOT advanced yourself to be about to express yourself with more intelligence. Maybe should you put some grunts in between! WOW! Where have you been, really, under a rock, I suppose!!

  • @madisonelectronic Also, your remark is disrespectful to the eleven men who died when the Horizon oil rig blew up, and to their families too. Over 200 million gallons of crude oil flowed into the Gulf. Communities, businesses and the marine life, etc. are still suffering from it. Shrimp fishermen have had their worst "harvest" in decades, etc.

This IS UNACCEPTABLE-PERIOD and CHANGE NEEDS TO HAPPEN in order for us to survive. It's the 21st century. America is NOT leading the world in innovation.

  • @madisonelectronic Germany, Denmark and China are and will run the market for solar, wind and other renewable energy sources if we don't get our "act" together, OR maybe you would rather me say "shit" together???!!!

  • @LisaScharin That is your decision to make, no one elses. There is no "we" just you. If you want "progression" do not use fossil fuels. Supply and demand.

  • @LasagnaIsGood Just me?? I think not! In case you haven't noticed there IS a NEW revolution that is part of the 99% towards Green, renewable energy, FINALLY! When polled over 80% of Americans want CLEAN, RENEWABLE energy sources and don't want to continue to subsidize dirty, polluting and devastating fossil fuels. Cancer rates, asthma, allergies, COPD, heart diseases, strokes, and even autism and early death are ALL linked to pollution in our air, water and our land. It's TIME WE did PROGRESS!

  • @LisaScharin Then why can't these wind and solar panel farms survive without subsides? Because when it hits their pocket books, people suddenly change their mind.

I'm sorry you can't have your green utopia, but truth is the world cannot survive without oil - at least not with the renewable energies we have now. EVERYTHING depends on oil and coal. The world cannot survive without hydrocarbons. Simply because the majority from your survey want clean energy, doesn't make them right.

  • @LisaScharin u just cant explain things to some people, the only time they listen is when u say these words........ I TOLD YOU SO! its sad really.

  • @AussieSoldier1984 Thanks, I know! It's amazing in this world of internet and SOOO much information at our fingertips that some people just can't see the "forest through the trees"!! It IS SAD! and frightnening too! Congress just passed spending 8.1 BILLION for just the disaster we had in 2010. I'm afraid to ask "What ELSE needs to happen for people to realize what we are doing to our planet and THEIR responsibility to help! In a Democracy it IS up TO THE PEOPLE, BUT TOO many have "given up"

  • @LisaScharin In so doing, money and power take over. When people think THEY can't make a difference, that their vote doesn't count, etc. it is a tragedy. I feel TOO many men and women have died for what we have! Ignorance is NOT bliss, it's dangerous! If NO one had visions beyond the "norm", than we would really still be in the "dark ages"!! If we don't PROGRESS and think "out of the box" we are doomed! Great people see a problem and find solutions, others say it can't be done and filibuster!!

  • @LisaScharin I served, beside those who died... It only amounted to slavery.

I wont vote for ANYONE they give us... what a fucking joke. Its not that I'm not voting, its that I would not hire them to do ANYTHING. It is my right to deny them my support. That's not filibustering, it is not supporting this aristocracy, where the privileged few lord over EVERY ATOM IN EXISTENCE in a grand orgy of regulation.

As for money, its irrelevant... value is dictated.

    /sigh

  • @LisaScharin While i completely agree with you, in fairness, i also must state that the progression from whale oil to even the earliest cars was a very long time, it takes time to be able to wean ourselves off of these fossil fuels, we must advance to survive and for modern society to progress, but we must have patience, and we will have to face the fact, that as great as it would be, total detachment from fossil fuels might not happen in our lifetime,or the lifetime of our children.

  • I wasn't saying that oil rigs should not exist. I was only saying that we should NOT invest more money, time and effort into anymore than we have now. We are actually drilling more wells now then we were during the Bush years.

Just as we "advanced" from hunters/gatherers, than an agricultural society, than from using Whale oil, riding horse and buggies, it is only a "natural progressive" to "wean" ourselves OFF fossil fuels and MOVE INTO THE 21st century!!

  • Can somebody tell me why there are so many dislikes for this video? I found it very interesting...

  • @AnduinX because the first 20 seconds suck ass... if you can bare that then the video is great lol

  • ALL the MORE reason NOT to have oil platforms and drilling in waters such as these! The Arctic and off the coast of Africa, it's pretty ignorant and absurd to put men at risk like that AND the ocean's ecosystem at risk too! Nature is NOTHING to be complacent about and MUST be respected!

  • @LisaScharin This is true but allot of the scientific advancements we have made today are thanks to those oil rigs. The alternative to these oil rigs is we go back about 70 to 100 technological years. It's easy for you to say things like that now without knowing the full extent of the implications.

  • @Blitzwolf44 I do know the implications of what happened in the Gulf with about 206 million gallons of oil spilling in the water there. I also know about the numerous spills and explosions BP had prior to this one horribly damaging incident. Also Shell is notorious for it's many spills and for the absolute destruction of the Niger Delta. Exxon Valdez and the spills in the Mississippi River, the San Francisco Bay and off the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand! NO new technologies yet! To prove safety

  • @LisaScharin What you don't understand is that oil being our main energy source for the last 800+ years has given us the ability to advance our civilisation to where it is today as it is the most calorific energy source currently known to man.

Had we not discovered oil or as you say "left it alone" we would not have had the opportunity to build what we have been able to build.

I agree that renewable energy is the way of the future but to go as far as to say rigs should not exist is absurd...

  • @Blitzwolf44 What? how exactly has it advanced us i mean yeah good things have came from oil but i see that its has put us in an even worse situation like debt, killing nature(ourselves, the world), its basically an addiction we need to get away from but smart guys like u will take care of it and while ur doing this u wont see how many people have been hurt by this black gold but really its all about the earth right were will we go if this planet is used up

  • @coNsperAZI Thank you for your input, now please return to watching Snoop Dogg videos where you belong.

  • Also, as far as going back 70-100 years, I believe that we MUST MOVE FORWARD with RENEWABLE, CLEAN energy sources!!! NOT continue to burn and drill and mine and blast for fossil fuels! They are buried, they are DEAD, keep them there! We have done ENOUGH damage to the planet we need to survive! We CANNOT do "business as usual" any longer! THAT IS keeping us in the DARK AGES and we WILL be behind in the Green market, which IS the future and China, India, the EU, etc. will lead.

  • blablabla, use metric universal system :/, 10-20m waves is common when your in a storm in Atlantic sea.

  • ok do they have a ship to withstand a 100 foot wave at 45mph?

  • borisgaydos please fuck off and die u shit cunt

  • 0:27 its c-3po

  • A rogue wave is powered by Sarah Palin's bullshit.

  • Rogue Waves suck major monkey azz.

  • People think rogue waves are much less dangerous then tsunamis, oh they are so wrong. People will be screwed when one hits the beach.

  • The cargo ships are just TOO WEAK. The RENA is cracking apart just from tiny waves .

  • i love the history channel...at least back when it wasn't so americana and redneck.

  • and landlubbers all thought our stories of rouge waves and giant squid were the rantings of drunken sailors... OK, mermaids MIGHT be a little much, but we were spot-on about the waves and squid!

  • 120p i met u agaun -.-"

  • While it is true that a rogue wave was involved in the disaster I hate it when this documentaries leave out pieces of the story in order to make it more dramatic.... the whole thing started when a rogue wave hit the platform and large quantities of water flooded an engine room who´s job was to regulate the ship´s ballast tanks.... one of them malfunctioned and the crew got confused as to how to operate them manually eventually it overturned but that happened hours after the wave.

  • a rogue wave is pretty much the combined energy from alot of other waves in a very rough sea. when these things reachs heights of 80plus feet theres no tellling how far they can travel.

  • Not quite 7b people and im gonna say its a bit far fetched to say all of them can get on youtube. Cynicism aside you are right its amazing how we progress with technology. Rogue waves are one of the most recent natural phenomenon we've discovered its amazing to think about

  • I have seen waves forty thousand feet high, taller than any mountain range on this planet. It was shown to me by the creator of this universe, this world, and every living creature that ever was or will be. Waves moving so fast and smashing into one another with such violence as I looked down at it and realized the horror I was seeing. Then the voice of the living GOD asked me "Is this the way it is to be." And I answered, It it is thy will Oh GOD. Mankinds violence will cause this,

  • @bparno

Dude... Seriously, what the FUCK were you SMOKING????

  • @Donmeister85 What's a dude? I don't smoke. this is my report, this is what I was shown.

  • @bparno interesting. but the good news is that God (whose name is Jehovah and whose son is Jesus) said He would never destroy the world with water ever again. He gave proof of this by giving us the rainbow.

the next time...will be by fire. perhaps the vision you had was symbolic of something?

  • @raufus3006 Who said the next time will be by fire? Jesus never said that, but he did say the end is near did he not. GOD the creator made a pact with NOAH never to destroy this world by water, and NOAH made a pact that for all time his children would practice violence no more. An earthquake would cause this flood that the creator of all things has shown me, as it was his voice that asked me if this is the way it is to be. I answered if it is thy will O GOD. This is my report.

  • @bparno Can I buy some of the shit your on?

  • @bok666choy Truth cannot be purchased, but you do not know what that is, nor do you care to. My report is from the truth, the very creator of this universe, the very one who sent you yourself into this world, and all you are interested in is purchasing shit. You will find plenty of "shit" for free from the nearest pig farmer you meet.

  • my life is now complete

  • Don't. Mess. With. The Sea.

  • There's a book out called "the wave" by Susan Casey, very informative on this subject

  • Why don't people get the facts through their heads? We need CMA energy!

There would be no oil drilling in the seas~

  • Why can't satellites pick them up?

  • Its the History Channel, not NatGeo. Fucking idiots...

  • one in every 200,000 waves will be 3 times bigger than the biggest wave that day.

  • @Pighaterskater

Your self referencing equation is hurting my brain.

  • I thought the 12 foot wave I got hit by was big...

  • people who are not smart please do not go out in the waves when there huge you can get carried away bye the wave into the middle of the ocean stupid people out there

  • Most of the observations have been in the area SE of Africa, but they are not unique to this area. One of the most famous Rogue Waves almost sank the Queen Mary which was transporting U.S. troops to England in World War II.

  • @borisgaydos The Captain of the QE2 said his ship was hit by a rogue. This was in the late 80s or early 90s when rogue waves were denied by everyone including scientists. Nobody dared tell the Captain he was lying, and his testimony convinced a lot of naysayers.

  • @dieseldog00 All waves are wind generated. The only exception is waves caused by earth quakes. The idea that there are just these 100 foot waves that pop up out of know where and roam the ocean sinking ships is just a bit silly really.

  • @borisgaydos the internet (together with youtube and wikipedia) is the biggest revolution of the last 70 years.

The knowledge of the world is collected and presented in text, speech, picture and video.

We in this century witnessed the revival of the legendary Library of Alexandria.

The internet will revolutionize societies in ways we cant even imagine today. The uprise in the arab world was only the beginning

We take this for granted, but in our minds we know that this is something very special

  • @borisgaydos Sadly, most people that have access to the internet are from north & south america, europe, russia or asia. billions (!) of people are still having more simple problems like finding something to eat or to drink for today. but that will hopefully change one day.

thanks for putting this in perspective. greetings from germany btw.

  • -- Part III --

The theory deals ONLY with the specific areas mentioned which produce rogues on a somewhat common basis. It CAN'T explain random mid-ocean waves. Almost all of areas I have identified from sat-images share a similar design. They are between land-masses, have strong ocean currents in one direction, & strong prevailing surface winds from the exact opposite direction. I'm not going to elaborate further at this time, but I'm sure many of you can see where my theory goes from there.

  • -- Part II --

The "where" of rogue waves are actually one of the most important parameters. Although possible ocean-wide, there are a few specific locations which produce them much more often than pure chance. We know that now because of knowing what to look for on many years past of satellite images. One of these hot-spots is between the SE African coast & Madagascar. With engineering-once-girlfriends help, I'm working on a theory of cause for SOME rogue waves, but by no means all of them.

  • -- Part I --

I did extensive studies on rogue waves in a thesis for my Masters a couple years back. After approval, several fellow students saw that I had the beginnings of something very important & useful, so decided to expand & publish it. We still have a couple of specifics to be ironed out however, which SHOULD happen within a couple months. My girlfriend at the time was an engineering major, better able to answer the "how" of the waves. A geography major, I knew more about the "where".

  • when i was in Hawaii i was surfing in about 5 foot waves then all of a sudden a like 25 foot waves comes out of nowhere and takes me out? is that a rouge wave?

  • @needsomekyle Any wave exceeding usual height at any particular moment in time can be called a 'Rouge Wave'

  • @needsomekyle technically yes. a rogue wave is defined as a wave that is double the size the average waves

  • Imagine how rich we are. 70 years ago, rogue waves were simply old wives tales, or the last thing one saw before you slipped the surly bonds with earth, and touched the face of God. 50 years ago, you might have been lucky enough to watch a one time video feed, open to perhaps 1 million people. Today, with the joy of YouTube, the wonder of Rogue Waves, and all World Wide TV phenomena, is open to all 7 billion people...............forever.

  • @borisgaydos not all countries have internet you ignorant bastard

  • @borisgaydos >slipped the surly bonds with earth and touched the face of god ಠ_ಠ

  • @borisgaydos And with all that technology, the best way you could think to film it was to point your phone's camera at your tv.

  • borisgaydos asks on my profile "Do you have a better idea?"

    Better ideas:

    1) Record the program onto a DVD.

    2) DVR the program and download the video from the DVR to your computer.

    3) Stream the program via your computer

    4) Stream the program via your phone and upload to your computer.

    5) Instead of posting poor quality video to Youtube and rapving like a mental about Youtube helping the masses learn about rogue waves, go have a sandwich and a nap.

    6) Squeeze one out. Nonverbally, this time.

  • @excallq ROFL,

  • @borisgaydos forever until censored by DA guvment'

  • @borisgaydos except from north korea :P

  • @borisgaydos 'Today, with the joy of YouTube, the wonder of Rogue Waves, and all World Wide TV phenomena, is open to all 7 billion people'.

What planet do you live on? In this world, there is currently only 30% of the population who have any sort of potential access to the internet. There who have a personal or home internet connection is just 15%, mainly in the US and Europe. So there are less than one billion who actually have the ability to go on Youtube looking at videos like this. Idiot.

  • @borisgaydos VIDEOS LIKE THIS ARE THE CANCER OF YOUTUBE HAVE ANOTHER DISLIKE YOU PIECE OF SHIT

  • anyone else feel poor watching tv through a video feed? haha

  • Its almost like the ocean doesnt want live footage of them to get back to land.

  • I watched this on t.v yesturday

  • this sucks

  • Parasites have a right to film too!

  • Just imagine all the joy that is brought to people on the internet who discover great videos they missed on TV. We can't have access to most past TV programs, but by inputting a name or topic, we have a video library of thousands of clips to choose from. However, those who do not wish to avail themselves of this rich resource, can revert to their playstations.

  • @borisgaydos What?

  • @borisgaydos : then please give us a download link of the full length video. thank you

  • @borisgaydos i know. unfortunately i stay on here all day sometimes. esp looking at shows that are no longer aired

  • get a life. dont film TV

  • Jesus... that wave mustve been huge, to get into the control rool. 30 metres... fuck. im so afraid of the ocean.

  • Heard that it happen at FEBRUARY 14, oh so sad.

  • the guy talking sounds like batman

  • where was laird hamilton

  • bullshit...

  • wow, filming the tv..... when u cant get any lower

  • @crazedbaby851 ha, take it you've never used a VCR?

  • @crazedbaby851

Not unless I film this very video from youtube and upload it myself.

  • @poobert So basically you're saying you stole the video from someone else. Yeah that seems much better

  • @crazedbaby851 He is showing a video to all with magnificient footage and you speak of how ' low ' it is and how bad it is . Ungrateful little shit . Wow , store - band cola . Can ' t get any lower .

  • @crazedbaby851 Or he/she decided to film it while watching it because they are a noob?

    You fail lol.

  • Are they sure it wasnt 99 feet or 101 feet?

  • a rogue wave hit my plastic boat last night , it gets stormy in my bath tub

  • @tomwilz15 lol

  • scheiß qualli

  • plus the english language is always changing and evolving, so rules change all the time. new words are invented. thats why a lot of spanish words now are similar to english words. we made up new words no languages have translations for. its an evolving world you best learn to adapt.

  • @vGRAFINATORv Actually I work at a university and professors do actually care about proper grammar and spelling. They are already failing students because they believe, as you do, that they don't have to write properly at this level because everyday life (aka the internet) does not require it of them.

I however will not lower myself nor dumb down my intelligence because of people like you. As we are off topic to this video I am done. Good day sir. I will proceed to ignore you now.

  • @cheart99 people like you piss me off the fuck who cares about fucking grammer fuck grammer you peice of shit

  • @SuperResound LoL!!Yeahhhh...you TELL him,LoL!!Personally,i DO appreciate grammar,as tiny things like a comma, tells you exactly how the person writing, wants the reader to pause, which helps the reader to make sense of whats being read!!I'm not fanatical about other peoples usage of grammar, but it certainly helps immeasurably to me as a reader,no question!!I certainly wouldn't bother to argue about it though,LoL!!

  • @TheMrMarilyn I find it hard to believe that you appreciate grammar.

  • @icianthea And exactly WHERE you got the absurd notion i give a flyin fuk WHAT you think is...??Fact,don bother...as i said...couldn't give a fuk who/why/what/where/when etc...twit...

  • @TheMrMarilyn I get the absurd notion that you care because you took the time to reply.

  • @icianthea That probably took only 20 secs to type out..

  • @cheart99 You could not be more right. Ingoring 100's of years of development for comfort is just spitting on history.

  • Hiii! (Im waving!)

  • wave watching is the new trend

  • haha i was just watching this and it made me want to watch more waves on youtube, then i found this

  • A rogue wave did not sink the ocean ranger. A large wave from the storm broke a portlight which then let water into the ballast control room. The water caused a malfunction in the ballast control panel. This lost in control over ballast lead to OR being capsized by the regular movement of waves. A wave only had to be 28 feet to hit the portlight and ballast control room on the OR.

Also there have been no official reports to say it was a rogue wave that hit.

  • @cheart99 is there like a problem with rogue waves existing? are they of the devil? honestly i think theyre sick and it rly doesnt matter if they exist or not because if they do weve been living with them for thousands of years and nobody wud make up something like a rogue wave. theyd have to be retarted. wud u try to make up about rogue waves? what cause wud u have for that. obviously theyre real.

  • @vGRAFINATORv 1 your grammar and spelling sucks. 2 I didn't say that rogue wave don'y exist. I live in ocean faring communities and I already know that rogue waves exist. I said that that kind of wave didn't sink the ranger. Please read what I wrote for what it is unless English is not your first language and you don't quite understand it yet.

  • @cheart99 does it really matter if anyone uses correct grammar on youtube? oh no colleges are looking at youtube and now they wont take me because i cant comment perfectly wahhhhh. also i didnt spell anything wrong maybe if you knew about teenagers and were smart youd know its a waste of time to type out every single word perfectly when you can just use "u" instead of "you". yes i know its more formal and polite to do it all proper, but youtube is just a social video website, it doesnt matter.

  • HOLY MONKEY BALLS

  • What program is this?

  • This was from a National Geographic program which recycles from time to time as ROGUE WAVES.

  • :-) 10x

  • @borisgaydos that was history channel look at the icon in the bottom right corner

  • @borisgaydos : do you have a download link for us? thank you.

  • @borisgaydos thanks man was def curious
