@82kbrown "Spirit Bears" are black bears with a RARE messed up gene that is passed on through reproduction. There are 400 - 1000 "Spirit Bears" - fact in it's self of over population! Do the math.., spirit bear live in only one area of the province, the "spirit bear" gene affects 1 in 10 black bears in this area, there are anywhere from 400-1000 spirit bears...THIS MEANS THERE ARE 4000-10000 BEARS LIVING IN THIS ONE AREA!!.....do your research before you open your hypocrite hippie mouth.
@medlands and tac223:To bad they are talking about the Spirit Bear and not black bears..A white Black Bear. Obviously you dont care about our environment.
The kermodei subspecies ranges from Princess Royal Island to Prince Rupert, British Columbia on the coast, and inland toward Hazelton, British Columbia. It is known to the Tsimshian people as Moksgm'ol.
In the February 2006 Speech from the Throne by the Government of British Columbia, the Lieutenant Governor announced her government's intention to designate the Kermode or spirit bear as British Columbia's official animal.
@medlands I've read several of your comments now, and I can see you're a redneck troll. You probably live in a rural area, make good money, and think because the world looks pretty big from where you stand, it will go on forever and resources are limitless. You simply can't see the big picture - literally can't see the forest for the trees.Yes, WE Canadians (I happen to live on the BC coast) have a lot of resources at our disposal, but that doesn't mean we should treat it like it's disposable.
@medlands I'm not saying that human activity is inherently a bad thing. Just the stupid, shooting-ourselves-in-the-collective-foot-for-short-term-gain-benefitting-the-already-wealthy kind. I'm not one of those 'animals are great but people suck' types. I love humanity... happen to be part of it. I think humans are more important than animals... but we are part of the damn ecosystem. We can't devastate it willy-nilly. We might not even realize all the consequences of our actions for generations.
@medlands you say the bear population is on the rise. BS. Human interaction with bears is on the rise because of the spread of human development and the decimation of the natural habitat of bears. Where once there was salmon-aplenty, there are slim pickings now, largely due to human activity.
@TuringOracle FACT - "British Columbia's black bear population is currently at an historic high. The Wildlife Branch estimates that 120,000 to 160,000 black bears live in British Columbia, having increased from around 80,000 in 1870. (Demarchi 1999). This is nearly 30% of the 443,000 black bears in the Canadian population and approximately 15% of the 803,000 black bears in the North American population (Samuel and Jackson 2000)."
@TuringOracle FACT - "Black bears are Yellow-listed in BC, which means they are neither endangered nor vulnerable... British Columbia and Ontario have the largest populations of black bears of all the provinces. In British Columbia, black bears are found throughout the province. They are the only large mammal in the province that occupies every ecosection."
@medlands you talk about zero emissions... but what do you think the pipeline is carrying? It's OIL, dumbass, which is fuelling global climate change (not 'warming').
@TuringOracle Thank you for your comments, you actually sound like one of the most educated people on here. The problem is that everyone including you seems to only think oil is purely used for energy. Pretty much everything is either petroleum based or manufactured by machinery using oil...so oil is needed. Don't worry i'm against burning oils as much as the rest of you, but we still need it for so much more. So how should we get it to the coast? Burning more to get it there seems counteractive
There is a reason why scientists speculate that there's a sixth extinction in process. This will be the first one in history to have been caused by a species (others for example were caused by the ice age and meteors). So yes I think we should try to preserve what animals we have before they only become a 'spirit'.
that quote stands for all i hate about the environmentalist movement, you cant take a quote out of context. ignorant fucks. all you hippies deserve to die, for shunting the growth of the HUMAN civilization, at the sake of animals.
Come on kermode bears just start assortative mating and you can become your own species! Then they can be red listed and the pipeline will never be able to happen :P
! see you are growing your stuff in plastic pots, probably under plastic greenhouses, on plastic tables and watering with your plastic hose......oh ya, fertilizers contains oil too.
I shoot animals and eat them, can't get much more renewable than that!
@medlands Please eat your own shit. Then you can recycle it. Also, you ignorant idiot. This is about how rare the SPIRIT BEAR IS and the impact oil exploration can have on these already rare, shy and genetically unique animals. NOW GO AWAY.
@CyprusHot oil exploration does not happen in the mountains and if these bears can not live outside of a 100' wide cut exactly where the pipe will run then they are fucked
@medlands You ignorant bastard. Europe was home to thousands of bears before they became extinct. You really are a pathetic, stupid idiot. Now go fuck yourself.
@CyprusHot you must be ancient to have lived with and learned the habits of the mythical and long extinct UK bear. Over here in northern Canada we live with bears, they bust through our windows, destroy our homes and vehicles, kill our livestock and live to eat any gas and oil can in sight. I really don't think you have any expertise over there to be ringing in on this subject.
@medlands That is your opinion. Bears are on the decline in north america; fact. Anything done to make things worse will simply make things harder for them; fact. As for bears trashing your places.... simply lies. You moved into THEIR habitat. Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world. Go fucking live where there are no bears.
@CyprusHot Nope, Black Bears are on the rise, even moving south into areas where they never roamed before. BTW spirit bears are just black bears with a messed up gene.....
@CyprusHot You must be thinking of polar bears, they are in a decline because of global warming being sped up by emissions from trucks, trains, etc.(the alternative to pipelines) Yep, is it finally clicking in? By trying to stop a simple environmentally friendly, zero emission pipe from running through the forest you are helping destroy an actual whole species of bear that is in danger, the polar bear..Stoners with video cameras are not biologists or environmental engineers.
@CyprusHot bears get chased around our towns and cities by police with rifles and hand guns, farmers have to build stands around their crops for shooting to save the millions of dollars in damage that they do, they will chew on your car mirror while you are sitting in it...FACT not lies
@CyprusHot do the math.., spirit bear live in only one area of the province, the "spirit bear" gene affects 1 in 10 black bears in this area, there are anywhere from 400-1000 spirit bears...THIS MEANS THERE ARE 4000-10000 BEARS LIVING IN THIS ONE AREA!! Sounds like a pretty healthy population to me!.......dumb ass
@CyprusHot just try googling "black bears in town" I just came up with 55,500,000 results....our town, as most, has been in their habitat for over 100 years, i think they are used to it by now. Maybe we should follow YOUR lead and wipe out every last bear on the continent! There are so many bears here that they are considered a nuisance animal and may be killed on sight as soon as they pose a threat to your property! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!
@CyprusHot ritish Columbia has something like 800 000 square km's of forest, more than 27 000 km's of coast line. I agree that they are pretty cool and should be looked after ( much like the albino moose ) but punching a hundred foot hole through the bush isn't going to bother the beers. Probably even provide new grazing ground for them, allowing the to expand and flourish mush like power lines and natural gas pipe lines do. ( yes pipelines aren't new, we even generate energy off of them )
HAHA! I can't see how the lack of monitoring drunken ship captains has anything to do with environmental PROGRESS as pipelines. I'm pretty sure a pipe running through the forest has zero emissions and actually saving the forest compared to hundreds of trucks and trains running 24/7 spewing exhaust.
p.s. Bears live for eating oil jugs, gas cans, diapers, etc..etc..etc., and a fish and small animal die off would be like heaven for them, probably even boost the bear population.
... and to the person who says that the pipeline is not anywhere near the bears, the tankers will be in the bear area and if the tankers runs aground and leaks oil, the bears and /or the fish they eat will be affected...ever heard of a food chain?
Excellent video. Kudos to Mr Bacon for this and I fully support the First Nations in stopping this pipeline from being built. I used to work for the BC Forest Service and saw how determined the First Nations and environmentalists were in changing the logging practises and that was very successful. I also know how unstable the land that the pipeline route is on and it is very unstable prone due to landslides frost heeving and sloughing,...it is just a matter of time before a leak would occur.
How stupid are Americans? Land of the hypocrite. Home of mentally challenged. They are right about the tankers though. But not the they believe. Canadian companies should build the refineries here and let the American economy fall further, and let their unemployment stats rise! They aren't smart enough to realize how many jobs these pipelines would create. American Enviro"mental"ists don't want the world to realize that the attack on the Alberta tarsands just happened to start when America was
Greenpeace's pockets are lined with healthy "donations" from the Saudi Royal Family.... what does that tell you? I bet the money to produce this video was "donated" as well.

Okay mining bitumin in the Athabasca tar sands region is quite the environmental disaster on it's own. From what I read, they are proposing that the pipeline should end at a terminal in Prince Rupert to ship bitumin by tanker. I visited Prince Rupert many times and lived in Terrace. The pictures of the fiords and Islands in this video is not Prince Rupert where large ferries and other ships travel regularly. Enviro-propagandists and Corporate Nazis should get together and have a circle jerk.
