  • If you think 'Interesting Drug' and ' Every Day is Like Sunday' are not great songs you never were Smiths fans so of course you can't appreciate moz.

  • Remembering Tony Wilson (AHW), whose birthday was yesterday, 20th February. (born 20/02/1950)

  • Johnny looks so fucking cool in this interview

  • It's interesting from this how important Andy & Mike were to complete 'The Smiths sound'. Moz's solo band never matched them in quality. His ever revolving door of musicians outside of Boz & Alain.

  • I LOVE how Tony is trying to get under Moz's skin in this interview. Calling him Steven, asking what right does he have to say what he thinks about Manchester schools in his music. But with Johnny, Andy and Mike he's very nice towards them. Now, Tony & Moz have a history before The Smiths. They used to chat in Morrissey's house about becoming famous one day. I think they had a mutual respect for one another despite the mind games.

  • RIP TONY WILSON

  • gosh, Marr's guitar playing... perfection

  • johnny marr's class in this footage...his playing and his one liner about mozart..!!.

  • Thank you for uploading this... a time when music wasn't about anything but making music... We will never get footage like this nowadays.

  • Tony Wilson was actually a pretty decent journalist. Who knew?

  • The interview between Wilson and Morrissey seems a little awkward.....but whatever, two of the greatest figures to ever grace music. RIP Tony

  • what's Johnny playing at 2:30?

  • @sml200867 miserable lie, no?

  • @MjLewisMusic Nah, that's Reel Around the Fountain.

  • @sml200867 Miserable Lie

  • haha i love how Tony Wilson gets away with calling him Stephen.

  • can you imagine such an interview being conducted with any of today's bands? as far as pop music was concerned, those really were better days

  • ..pretty sure it is..i just watched the rise and fall of the smiths...i never realised morrisey was such a cunt... personaly i think every member of the smiths is needed 2 make the smiths sound.. marr might be the main guy but andy rourke is a massive part of the sound and he wrote all the scales himself he deserved more than 10% sureley?.. and as great as morrisey was i think his ego went outa control .without marrs/rourkes/music he would of just been a frustrated poet

  • Bloody what?

  • Just saw "24 Hour Party People" last weekend and am obsessed with the music scene that flick dramatized. It truly is mind blowing how many amazing, influential, and ground breaking bands came out of Manchester during the late 70s/early 80s and beyond . . .

  • You can kinda tell Wilson is pissed off that The Smiths didn't sign to Factory.

  • mike joyce - biggest fucking ears known to man.

  • all smiths songs are boring and sound the same. All new order and joy division songs are perfection

  • @mrdisco91 cock

  • @mrdisco91 Prolly got that reversed.

  • @mrdisco91 mmm yeah

  • @mrdisco91 you're an idiot if you think all of the smiths tracks sound the same, an idiot or a deaf person.

  • @MinorHeadstorm i had a change of heart i now love morrissey

  • lovin the irony of joyce and rourkes interview when they weren't appreciated and i bet morrisey was at the other side of the room making sure they didn't say anything against him

  • FUCK The Smiths, there a group of stuck up cunts who are nothing when compared to Joy Division

  • @margatelover69 It's a matter of opinion no need to be so mean. Both are among my favourites.

  • what's up with johnny marr's teeth in this?

  • ooh! you don't call him steven. I wonder how well they knew each other before The Smiths.

  • Cool vid Mr Manchester interviews The Smiths

  • Johnny Marr is one of the best British guitarist to grace this earth!

  • @tommietippie2 Second only to Vini Reilly!

  • Tony Wilson called a cunt but still cool as fuck. . .RIP. . .

  • RIP TONY x

  • 0:55 I'll bet ol' Mozzy watches this shit now and just gnashes his teeth.

  • Cool interview, great band, when are you coming back to Liverpool Morrissey, unfinished business?

  • Mike Joyce, next to Reni he's the greatest drummer of all time.

  • I don't care what anyone says, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce WERE the Smiths!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • marr looks like a young keith richards..

  • WHAT, bloody what, used to be "hanging out of Morrisey's pockets" at 3:12??

I just can't understand the accent. I am sorry, but I've backed up at least 16 times.

No offense to any given dialect out there. Yes, I am an American for whatever that's worth here. I love this era of British music, & Mr. Wilson has always seemed like one of the coolest people to have ever lived to me. Peace.

    d.

  • "...the Gladiolis he used to have hanging out his pocket..."

Think he meant Gladioli without an S: it is plural of Gladiolus, after all.

  • @dirtysci gladiolus. It's a flower.Morrisey used to have flowers in his back pockets.

  • Tony Wilson: where the melodies come from?¿?¿

Johnny Marr: the answer is I don't know ..really genius guy

  • Great vid. This really drives home how fucking awful interviews are these days.

  • Best guitarists ever

Hendrix, Johnny Marr, Jimmi Page, Patrick Waldern

  • @desasterz whose patrick waldern?

  • God, I feckin' love Johnny...

  • Marr is so cute

  • "Our time will come" - blimey!

  • what's the song that johnny marr plays at 2.10?

  • @MrHankscorpio100 I'm quite sure it's Reel around the fountain played by strumming the chords, instead of picking them (for the song mentioned), which he does at 2:30 into the video, and which he does in the live and studio versions of the song.

  • Mozza really does sound gay in his younger year`s!

  • Remembering Tony (AHW), who would have been 60 today. Thanks for the moral support you gave me, when I needed it most. And, by the way, you were right about everything......almost. I just thought you'd like someone to write that about you. Actually, I could do with your advice at the moment! God Bless.

  • Dear Morrissey - those gorgeous eyebrows, and as ever a nice turn of phrase. "It doesn't make life worse" - oh, how we miss this from pop stars today.

Dear old Johnny, Mike and Andy too - such a brilliant band.

The humour, intelligence and modesty of all concerned - even Morrissey, really - is a delight.

  • Great Video

  • Marr doesn`t have a contemptuous bone - just a lovely man. Apart from his dislike for Prince.

  • Oh really, you don't know the lovley Johnny then !

  • Thank you for this! We had absolutely no coverage of The Smiths in the U.S.A. during the '80s. Only the alternative stations would play their music. And no interviews could be found anywhere.

  • how apt that Mike Joyce said "Our time will come"

  • Anyone know what songs Marr is playing here? I know the last one is the beginning of nowhere fast but I'm not sure of the others.

  • @202GM

1:58 the first chord F#maj7 from 'Heaven Knows.....'

2:10 He is just giving an example of folk strumming, but using the chords to 'Reel Around The Fountain'

2:28 Does the arpeggio to 'Reel Around The Fountain'

    2:46 Nowhere Fast

  • Thanks a lot

  • @Coppertunes

2:28 Does the arpeggio to 'Reel Around The Fountain'

Isn´t it really similar to the begging of HOLD ON TO YOUR FRIENDS by Morrissey?

  • You honestly think so, a lot of arpeggios follow a distinct pattern, like 'Hold on...' but Johnny makes more of a melody out of his arpeggios.

I guess a lot of jingly jangle arpeggio's can sound similar, but Johnny's playing isn't as repetitive as the rest, that's what made him the prized picker that he is.

    Johnny is the man.

  • @Coppertunes not a single doubt

  • Comment removed

  • @Coppertunes Nah. 2:38 is miserable lie intro.

  • @spmcd2011 Nah nah, I take it your 2:38 is supposed to read 2:28 Its ' Reel around The Fountain' Listen to "It's time the tale were told, of how you took a child"........ This is it.

  • @Coppertunes You are half right, it's the chorus part.

  • @jumofi you=twat

  • I admire Tony Wilson but I have to say he really does urk me in this interview. I think it was a case of sour grapes on his part. I love Marrs Contemptuous sneer at the Mozart reference though

  • @simonpenum

I wouldn't say Johnny gave a contemptuous sneer at the Mozart reference. He looked more taken aback, before breaking into an approving & appreciative smile :--)

  • this interviewer is what alan partridge must of been based on

  • err... you do know Steve Coogan played Tony Wilson in 24 Hour Party People, right?

  • Mike Joyce at 1:27, "Our time will come." Fwd 20 odd years. Irony, ju$tice, and the la$t laugh. Ha, ha.

  • Yeah, good on mike joyce. Morrissey, the mean fuck.

  • you don't know tony wilson, do you? lol...

  • No sorry m8, he was a bit before my time lol!

  • "That interviewer" is Tony Wilson, you fool.

  • And Im supposed to know who he is?? I was only 3 years old when that was filmed..... you fool!

  • Yet you know who Morrissey is? I was only five at the time, but that has not prevented me from knowing about Wilson and other famous and influential people older than myself.

Wilson was just as influential in the Manchester music scene as Morrissey, if not more so.

  • fair enough u were only 5 at the time I understand, although Im not from Manchester neither am I likely 2 c Tony Wilson playing at the Barrowlands, besides Im a Smiths fan and have no interest in any of the other "Manchester movement" bands.

I do apologise for u being smarter than me.

  • There's a difference between "being smart" and knowing what you are talking about. I thought after people told you who he was you might have done a simple bit of research, goolgled him, looked on wikipedia or something and learned. Obviously you didn't. Fair enough, but if you comment on things, you might want to arm yourself with the facts first.

  • I never proclaimed 2 know what I was talking about u fucking idiot! If u had just been a normal person like "mindtpi" u would have informed me about Tony Wilson instead of trying 2 make urself look attractive by bullying or trying to belittle me because u seem 2 have more knowledge on the subject. Arm yourself with this fact.... If u dont like my comment (as harmless as it was) give a thumbs down instead of hitting back like the brains of Britain u sad old cunt!

  • The video quite clearly says it is Tony Wilson. He was famous back then and was in the news fairly recently following his death. They even made a film about him a few years back, but if you want to continue to feign ignorance and take offence when someone corrects you, call people "fucking idiots" and "sad old cunnts" like some kind of simpleton who pretends that he cannot listen or operate a search engine then fine, continue to lash out at anyone who attempts to give you some information.

  • I dont want ur information, Im well aware who Tony fucking Wilson is now. I only lashed out cause u called me a (fool) remember, please go away.......

  • Tony Wilson is easily as important as _any_ musician in the Manchester/UK scene (and more so than most). UK music was infinitely more interesting because of him and is all the worse off for his death.

He will be calling him Steven because, as AndyUnwritten pointed out, he knew him when he was still a school kid well before the Smiths. Morrissey sent him a record cover of the New York Dolls and told him he should stick them on So It Goes (or something that), so Morrissey obviously respected him

  • Completely agree with Muc1cGurl. People are fighting over which of the two greatest bands of all time are better and they're forgetting one simple fact. Nobody cares! Don't voice you opinion because none of us want to know who you prefer and for what reason. To each his own I say

  • Alright, sorry.. shitty Youtube commenting system.. -_-

Point's still there, both timeless bands.. love 'em both.. If the other guy bitches about Joy Division, just be happy in the knowledge that you have the sense to appreciate two amazing bands, you win by default. ;D

  • They both have a timeless sound, both important bands. I love them both.. quite trying to start an argument out of nothing.

  • Dude, who cares whether Joy Division or the Smiths are "better" I love both, people need to focus on the music and maybe we'd still have great bands like these ones in current day.

  • Rest in Peace Tony...Johnny Marr...up there with Hendrix.

  • @mushroomscouser Agree about Marr , but he'll never get the recognition that he deserves .

  • The Smiths cam in and totally dominated, and with good reason. Perhaps the greatest singles band since The Beatles. Nobody cares who started the Manchester scene, The Smiths re-shaped it and practically put Manchester on the map. Now i'm not saying single-handedly... But they were one of the pioneers definitely. The Smiths were far more superior musically, lyrically, the whole shebang. Taking nothing away from Joy Division, i would just hold The Smiths in higher regard.

  • What? I said Joy Division weren't in the same vein as The Smiths. Which they weren't, you can try to defend Joy Division all you want but everybody knows The Smiths were far superior.

  • And might I add what an amazingly humble man Johnny Marr is. One of the greatest guitarists of all time with an instantly recognisable sound who wrote of the greatest tunes of the 80s. Legend.

  • No Morrissey's not The Smiths. It was Morrissey and Marr who were The Smiths.

  • Morrissey is as handsome today as ever. Maybe moreso!

    What a legend.

  • Morrissey is so beautiful

  • Not any more he isn't! ;D)

  • It always stuck in Wilson's craw that he had never taken Morrissey seriously and that his name was never attached to them. They've tried, of late, to make 'Joy Division' an equivalent band - but 'The Smiths' blew 'Joy Division' out of the vugging water.

  • Well said my friend.

I don't see Joy Division in the same vein as The Smiths.

    Not many bands are.

  • "Our time will come"... Yes it did Joycey !!

Sueing your fellow band members. Bad move.

  • I like how he says in the beginning

    "this charming man"

    cause that's a song of there's n' stuff.

  • lol that gave me a chuckle :D

  • Jankas15 doesn't though.

  • That's what Mozart used to say, you know!!

  • Smart cookies.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Good ol' Motzart, hip guy!

  • Oh I love how his face lit up when he says that to the camera guy! Johnny is still sooo adorable!!!

  • good old Mozart, hip guy - class

  • So glad this video was posted. I was feeling really depressed and it always helps to see Tony again, even though we can only see him on film these days. Such a great interviewer..just made life so much more interesting. He had such charisma , and was the most impressive man of my generation in the North WestI And a sweetheart too. I think most of us loved him really and still miss him very badly!!

  • Comment removed

  • Couple of reasons - probably wishes he'd signed them himself, and doesn't like them for upping sticks and moving to London, being a proud Northerner and Mancunian.

  • Should have signed the Smiths, Tony.

  • Ever watch 24 Hour Party People, when GOD tells Tony Wilson who worships the Happy Mondays this movie "it's a pity you didn't sign the Smiths though"

  • The Smiths music is legendary.

    It will never die.

  • What tracks do the two riffs Johnny plays come from, at 2:10 and 2:29?

2:47 is Nowhere Fast, in case anyone was wondering about that one.

  • 2.29 is miserable lie.

  • or the hand that rocks the cradle...im not 100% to be sure...

  • i love him i love them i love him i lover them ilovehim linmdmndchjvfhfhdkdksdnmffnfj

  • I wonder what that Les Paul would be worth today.

  • 'let's make disco records or whatever' haha

  • Wow, I love this band.

  • They moved to London because Factory turned them down Tony !!

I loved the stuff you did for Manny Tony but you dropped a bollock when they approached you about signing them ! R.I.P. Buddy !

  • Martin Hannett resurrected!

  • Morris and Marr signed to Rough Trade.

  • Tony Wilsons just pissed off he didnt sign them when he had the chance, too late now tony

  • wow.. no one interviews pop stars like this anymore. on popworld the most probing qestion would be "how did you come up with your name?"

  • love the smiths and morrissey. im pretty sure morrissey is gay. if he is why cant he come out the closet. surely for him who 'dont care bout what anyone says' it should be easier and plus hes 49. but yes i spose that adds to the intrigue about him

  • my thoughts exactly

  • "Our time will come.."--> In form of a huge sawsuit!

Do not forget that Andy and Mike would still be no-name idiots without Johnny recruiting them into the Smiths! They basicly had to add the drums and bass to the finished songs, which to me isn't songwriting at all! It's the part of studio-musicians..

Tony Wilson is just an arrogant prick! "what right do you have?!"--> Are you serious you cunt! Thank god Morrissey is so whitty and slaps this asshole in his arrogant face (verbally of course..)!

  • you're the idoit, i'm a massive smiths and moz fan but i can still see when people have fucked others over! marr and moz did fuck rourke and joyce on the rough trade contract, and some of rourke's bass lines are genius, go listen to 'Barbarism begins at home'

you are right about Wilson, but that's about it

  • I never said they were bad... Of course Rourke is a great bass player! But if it wasn't for Johnny and his licks he would have never had the chance to play with the smiths. My hatred goes out to Mike Joyce. He made a huge fuss about nothing really...

I know Andy is a great bass player, but that doesn't mean he 'wrote' the song... It's Moz and Marr who 'wrote' the songs.

    understood?

    great!

  • Don't patronise me, and the point i was getting at was that joyce and rourke equally had right to kick up a fuss and claim the money they rightfully deserved, Marr and Moz lied to them both when they told Rourke and Joyce rough trade only required two signatures on the record deal contract when infact Moz and Marr chose to only sign themselves, effectively making themselves 'The Smiths' hense Rourke and Joyce only got paid a wage and were not given any royalties or say in the band

    understood?!

  • Well i imagine Rourke and Joyce cared, what's your issue you sound really bitter and jealous?

  • Bitter? Jealous? Well maybe a little jealous because they were near Morrissey and Marr for 5 years ;-) Marr and Moz really deserve the attention given to them! At least they're making music and aren't riding the nostalgia "we-were-in-the-smiths-and-are-going-to-exploit-is-as-much-as-we-can" train. Did you listen to Marr on the new Pet Shop Boys album? There are some really nice tunes on there.. Reminds me of the "Electronic" era with marr and tenant (on some songs)..

  • I think the word you're looking for ..for this guy Lewis is Ignorant !

  • i'm ignorant or Icky is?

  • Nah you're spot on man it was lcky I was on about !!

  • Can anyone recognize that riff that he plays at 2:10 ? it sounds great...

  • "Heaven Knows I'm miserable now"

  • na man it aint

  • Reel Around The Fountain

  • naa its neither 'reel around the fountain' or 'heaven knows'

  • It is. The first thing he plays is the opening chord of Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Know (only the first chord!).

Then they start talking, and then he plays a full chord version of Reel Around the Fountain.

After that he plays the picking version of Reel Around the Fountain.

The last riff is the opening riff of Nowhere Fast.

  • Marr about Reel Around the Fountain:

"Reel Around The Fountain" [The Smiths] was my interpretation of James Taylor's version of "Handy Man". I was trying to do a classic melodic pop tune, and it had the worst kind of surface prettiness to it.''

You can hear it's based on Taylor's Handy Man when he plays the full chords.

So the riff he plays at 2:10 is Handy Man[Taylor]/Reel Around the Fountain, to answer your question.

  • I always find it amusing that people think that Morrissey was the biggest ego in the Smiths when Marr is just as much self obsessed.

  • good ole Mozart, hip guy haha

  • They're "taking" what is rightfully due to them.

Morrissey fucked them over royally. He's an amazing poet and singer, but he's a greedy and self-absorbed twat.

  • Andy is sweet & Humble.

Andy & Mike were robed. They were a big part of the Smiths Sound just as much as Moz & Marr were.

Moz is pompous & greedy (sorry).

  • Mike got his 25% in the end

Andy settled for his 10%--probably cuz his heroin addiction messed up the band for a while.

Truth be told, though--when criticism was leveled at the band in the press for one thing or another, Johnny and Moz took the brunt of it cuz they ARE the face of the band--thus they deserve a bigger cut than their "back up players" (their words, not mine).

Both sides of their dispute have their valid points--all I'm saying.

  • What's this "LOL" stuff all about? Incredible - I was there in the late '80s. Smiths weren't then just "indie" fare - their rhythm section too good to be put in any area. Greatest band since the Fab 4 in a brick slum, in itself, very ordinary, quite extraordinary. Smiths never designed the marketing "indie" wank. idea.
