It's interesting from this how important Andy & Mike were to complete 'The Smiths sound'. Moz's solo band never matched them in quality. His ever revolving door of musicians outside of Boz & Alain.
I LOVE how Tony is trying to get under Moz's skin in this interview. Calling him Steven, asking what right does he have to say what he thinks about Manchester schools in his music. But with Johnny, Andy and Mike he's very nice towards them. Now, Tony & Moz have a history before The Smiths. They used to chat in Morrissey's house about becoming famous one day. I think they had a mutual respect for one another despite the mind games.
..pretty sure it is..i just watched the rise and fall of the smiths...i never realised morrisey was such a cunt... personaly i think every member of the smiths is needed 2 make the smiths sound.. marr might be the main guy but andy rourke is a massive part of the sound and he wrote all the scales himself he deserved more than 10% sureley?.. and as great as morrisey was i think his ego went outa control .without marrs/rourkes/music he would of just been a frustrated poet

Yet you know who Morrissey is? I was only five at the time, but that has not prevented me from knowing about Wilson and other famous and influential people older than myself.

fair enough u were only 5 at the time I understand, although Im not from Manchester neither am I likely 2 c Tony Wilson playing at the Barrowlands, besides Im a Smiths fan and have no interest in any of the other "Manchester movement" bands.
There's a difference between "being smart" and knowing what you are talking about. I thought after people told you who he was you might have done a simple bit of research, goolgled him, looked on wikipedia or something and learned. Obviously you didn't. Fair enough, but if you comment on things, you might want to arm yourself with the facts first.
I never proclaimed 2 know what I was talking about u fucking idiot! The video quite clearly says it is Tony Wilson. He was famous back then and was in the news fairly recently following his death. They even made a film about him a few years back, but if you want to continue to feign ignorance and take offence when someone corrects you, call people "fucking idiots" and "sad old cunnts" like some kind of simpleton who pretends that he cannot listen or operate a search engine then fine, continue to lash out at anyone who attempts to give you some information.

Completely agree with Muc1cGurl. People are fighting over which of the two greatest bands of all time are better and they're forgetting one simple fact. Nobody cares! Don't voice you opinion because none of us want to know who you prefer and for what reason. To each his own I say
Point's still there, both timeless bands.. love 'em both.. If the other guy bitches about Joy Division, just be happy in the knowledge that you have the sense to appreciate two amazing bands, you win by default. ;D
Dude, who cares whether Joy Division or the Smiths are "better" I love both, people need to focus on the music and maybe we'd still have great bands like these ones in current day.
The Smiths cam in and totally dominated, and with good reason. Perhaps the greatest singles band since The Beatles. Nobody cares who started the Manchester scene, The Smiths re-shaped it and practically put Manchester on the map. Now i'm not saying single-handedly... But they were one of the pioneers definitely. The Smiths were far more superior musically, lyrically, the whole shebang. Taking nothing away from Joy Division, i would just hold The Smiths in higher regard.
What? I said Joy Division weren't in the same vein as The Smiths. Which they weren't, you can try to defend Joy Division all you want but everybody knows The Smiths were far superior.
And might I add what an amazingly humble man Johnny Marr is. One of the greatest guitarists of all time with an instantly recognisable sound who wrote of the greatest tunes of the 80s. Legend.
It always stuck in Wilson's craw that he had never taken Morrissey seriously and that his name was never attached to them. They've tried, of late, to make 'Joy Division' an equivalent band - but 'The Smiths' blew 'Joy Division' out of the vugging water.
So glad this video was posted. I was feeling really depressed and it always helps to see Tony again, even though we can only see him on film these days. Such a great interviewer..just made life so much more interesting. He had such charisma , and was the most impressive man of my generation in the North WestI And a sweetheart too. I think most of us loved him really and still miss him very badly!!
Couple of reasons - probably wishes he'd signed them himself, and doesn't like them for upping sticks and moving to London, being a proud Northerner and Mancunian.
love the smiths and morrissey. im pretty sure morrissey is gay. if he is why cant he come out the closet. surely for him who 'dont care bout what anyone says' it should be easier and plus hes 49. but yes i spose that adds to the intrigue about him
"Our time will come.."--> In form of a huge sawsuit!
Do not forget that Andy and Mike would still be no-name idiots without Johnny recruiting them into the Smiths! They basicly had to add the drums and bass to the finished songs, which to me isn't songwriting at all! It's the part of studio-musicians..
Tony Wilson is just an arrogant prick! "what right do you have?!"--> Are you serious you cunt! Thank god Morrissey is so whitty and slaps this asshole in his arrogant face (verbally of course..)!
you're the idoit, i'm a massive smiths and moz fan but i can still see when people have fucked others over! marr and moz did fuck rourke and joyce on the rough trade contract, and some of rourke's bass lines are genius, go listen to 'Barbarism begins at home'
I never said they were bad... Of course Rourke is a great bass player! But if it wasn't for Johnny and his licks he would have never had the chance to play with the smiths. My hatred goes out to Mike Joyce. He made a huge fuss about nothing really...
I know Andy is a great bass player, but that doesn't mean he 'wrote' the song... It's Moz and Marr who 'wrote' the songs.
Don't patronise me, and the point i was getting at was that joyce and rourke equally had right to kick up a fuss and claim the money they rightfully deserved, Marr and Moz lied to them both when they told Rourke and Joyce rough trade only required two signatures on the record deal contract when infact Moz and Marr chose to only sign themselves, effectively making themselves 'The Smiths' hense Rourke and Joyce only got paid a wage and were not given any royalties or say in the band
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well who cares... Who pays attention to Joyce and Rourke anymore, or did you hear them on the radio lately? The only thing these two can do is crappy smiths 'documentarys' (if one can call them so) and go to radioshows with unreleased demo tapes of the smiths. yeah, nice career there, Joyce..
Bitter? Jealous? Well maybe a little jealous because they were near Morrissey and Marr for 5 years ;-) Marr and Moz really deserve the attention given to them! At least they're making music and aren't riding the nostalgia "we-were-in-the-smiths-and-are-going-to-exploit-is-as-much-as-we-can" train. Did you listen to Marr on the new Pet Shop Boys album? There are some really nice tunes on there.. Reminds me of the "Electronic" era with marr and tenant (on some songs)..
"Reel Around The Fountain" [The Smiths] was my interpretation of James Taylor's version of "Handy Man". I was trying to do a classic melodic pop tune, and it had the worst kind of surface prettiness to it.''
You can hear it's based on Taylor's Handy Man when he plays the full chords.
So the riff he plays at 2:10 is Handy Man[Taylor]/Reel Around the Fountain, to answer your question.
Andy settled for his 10%--probably cuz his heroin addiction messed up the band for a while.
Truth be told, though--when criticism was leveled at the band in the press for one thing or another, Johnny and Moz took the brunt of it cuz they ARE the face of the band--thus they deserve a bigger cut than their "back up players" (their words, not mine).
Both sides of their dispute have their valid points--all I'm saying.
What's this "LOL" stuff all about? Incredible - I was there in the late '80s. Smiths weren't then just "indie" fare - their rhythm section too good to be put in any area. Greatest band since the Fab 4 in a brick slum, in itself, very ordinary, quite extraordinary. Smiths never designed the marketing "indie" wank. idea.
If you think 'Interesting Drug' and ' Every Day is Like Sunday' are not great songs you never were Smiths fans so of course you can't appreciate moz.

Should have signed the Smiths, Tony.

Ever watch 24 Hour Party People, when GOD tells Tony Wilson who worships the Happy Mondays this movie "it's a pity you didn't sign the Smiths though"

The Smiths music is legendary.
It will never die.

What tracks do the two riffs Johnny plays come from, at 2:10 and 2:29?
2:47 is Nowhere Fast, in case anyone was wondering about that one.
jcrawley1 2 years ago
2.29 is miserable lie.

wow.. no one interviews pop stars like this anymore. on popworld the most probing qestion would be "how did you come up with your name?"

love the smiths and morrissey. im pretty sure morrissey is gay. if he is why cant he come out the closet. surely for him who 'dont care bout what anyone says' it should be easier and plus hes 49. but yes i spose that adds to the intrigue about him

IckyThumb1874 2 years ago
you're the idoit, i'm a massive smiths and moz fan but i can still see when people have fucked others over! marr and moz did fuck rourke and joyce on the rough trade contract, and some of rourke's bass lines are genius, go listen to 'Barbarism begins at home'
you are right about Wilson, but that's about it
lewis123456 2 years ago 5
I never said they were bad... Of course Rourke is a great bass player! But if it wasn't for Johnny and his licks he would have never had the chance to play with the smiths. My hatred goes out to Mike Joyce. He made a huge fuss about nothing really...
I know Andy is a great bass player, but that doesn't mean he 'wrote' the song... It's Moz and Marr who 'wrote' the songs.
understood?
great!
IckyThumb1874 2 years ago
Don't patronise me, and the point i was getting at was that joyce and rourke equally had right to kick up a fuss and claim the money they rightfully deserved, Marr and Moz lied to them both when they told Rourke and Joyce rough trade only required two signatures on the record deal contract when infact Moz and Marr chose to only sign themselves, effectively making themselves 'The Smiths' hense Rourke and Joyce only got paid a wage and were not given any royalties or say in the band
understood?!

IckyThumb1874 2 years ago
Well i imagine Rourke and Joyce cared, what's your issue you sound really bitter and jealous?
lewis123456 2 years ago 2
Bitter?

Reel Around The Fountain
airjordenk 2 years ago
naa its neither 'reel around the fountain' or 'heaven knows'
Jankas15 2 years ago
It is. The first thing he plays is the opening chord of Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Know (only the first chord!).
Then they start talking, and then he plays a full chord version of Reel Around the Fountain.
After that he plays the picking version of Reel Around the Fountain.
The last riff is the opening riff of Nowhere Fast.
Reint25 2 years ago
Marr about Reel Around the Fountain:
"Reel Around The Fountain" [The Smiths] was my interpretation of James Taylor's version of "Handy Man". I was trying to do a classic melodic pop tune, and it had the worst kind of surface prettiness to it.''
You can hear it's based on Taylor's Handy Man when he plays the full chords.
So the riff he plays at 2:10 is Handy Man[Taylor]/Reel Around the Fountain, to answer your question.
Reint25 2 years ago
I always find it amusing that people think that Morrissey was the biggest ego in the Smiths when Marr is just as much self obsessed.

They're "taking" what is rightfully due to them.
Morrissey fucked them over royally. He's an amazing poet and singer, but he's a greedy and self-absorbed twat.
Virus278 3 years ago 4
Andy is sweet & Humble.
Andy & Mike were robed. They were a big part of the Smiths Sound just as much as Moz & Marr were.
Moz is pompous & greedy (sorry).
karziflora 3 years ago 4
Mike got his 25% in the end

Smiths never designed the marketing "indie" wank. idea.
