I for one think that things could have worked out if Portnoy became the drummer of BOTH Dream Theater and Avenged Sevenfold. Things would have gone like this. Mike takes a 5 year break and works with A7X. Then this cycle happens.

2) Mike stays with A7X, tours with them for 2 years while, DT takes a break

In ASF he's able to do things he couldn't do enough of in DT. Such as "Natural Born Killer". What he did on that song would never fit DT. Mike is possibly, arguably the best drummer alive. He's proving it by switching to show his versitality. Also to keep the music fun. It didn't sound like DT was having as much fun with "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" compared to prior CD's. And for a band to be more popular with more fans basically means they are better.....and for Portnoy to quit a better band to play for a worse band doesn't make much sense. I mean he was helping them out...... But this is not an argument that can be settled, its all an opinon. But to say A7x sucks is completely ignorant.

@Thrasherist I'm not saying Dream Theater isn't popular, but less popular than A7x, yes they are. And I'm not saying Dream Theater doesn't have great people....I'm just establishing that A7x does NOT suck. And in their genre, yes lady Gaga and Justin Bieber and Jonas Bro's are much better, but their styles don't even closely relate or overlap with Dream Theater or A7x. With how many people A7x has viewing their songs and videos shows they do NOT suck.

In ASF he's able to do things he couldn't do enough of in DT. Such as "Natural Born Killer". What he did on that song would never fit DT. Mike is possibly, arguably the best drummer alive. He's proving it by switching to show his versitality. Also to keep the music fun. It didn't sound like DT was having as much fun with "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" compared to prior CD's. When you're rich, have fun. Otherwise sit on the couch and watch other people's movies & music like most of us!

If I had to put up with doing all the work for a band behind the scenes, and put up with nagging & complaining of band mates both for 20 years, it would eventually bring down the desire to continue. MP wanted only a break but no compromise could be reached. Remember the words in 'Take the Time’, 'The Shattered Fortress' & especially 'Constant Motion'. Everything DT was about says he needed "new life". I respect his choice. Hope A7X gets better!
