Nairobi is a big mess, missing a critical ingredient of a world city= Zoning and Planning. Why is there an Industrial area in Nairobi, right in the midst of residential estates? And the people occupying those houses for the most part don't even know what those factories process, it could even be cyanide, ammonia etc. Get all the factories way from the cities, de-centralise and spread those jobs to other areas. From there, buy or beg NGO's for fire trucks and equipment. God help Kenya...
How about we trade-in those newly surrendered Benzes for fire engines? Relocating factories spreads out the pollution and exposes more comunities to the effluence from said factories. I would go for creating a no-mans-land between the factories and residential areas by relocating a swathe of residential homes instead.
The factories are on the eastern side - right where the South East Monsoons sweep over, pick the toxic waste and carry it over most of the city!! And since the monsoons come during the rainy season, it deposits the waste on the city. The thirsty people of the city then drink the waste from their rain harvesting!! Kenya is rotten, to say otherwise is to lie.
Yikes - I had no idea about how bad it was from a climatic perspective. Do we have evidence of water-based poisoning as a result of this. I would posit that since the drinking water comes from Dams located outside of city confines, the factory emission effect is likely confined to areas where people fetch water from say Nairobi river or Nairobi Dam. Oops - did I just refer to piped water? My bad, it likely doesn't exist anymore in Nairobi, does it?
This "Mayor" was apparently elected again! Stupidity, and foolishness of KENYANS once again. Kenyans don't do enough to demand value for their money. I believe given pressure, these people can perform. I'm slowly realising that ending corruption will almost call for a complete rebirth of mindsets and attitudes; a complete people. The youth must be the ones to begin this process in time for the next generation because this current one is doomed. Or maybe sell Kenya to the west!!!!
A good article by Donald Kipkorir in the Nation yesterday just captures what you are saying: "To attract tourists, give up our towns to foreigners"... Google this title and read it, it is very good! We need to open up Kenya to foreigners. We need to attract the best from the world. We need to take the refugees out of the camps and into building Kenya. We need to have some sort of Green Cards. Every developed country tries to attract the best minds from the world.
Yes, a good article indeed. But the thought of tourists coming to perch permanently in my country I think is somewhat uncomfortable. Maybe they could be contracted? If they would lift some restrictions they impose on Africans who wish to travel for legitimte reasons, then we could begin to see each other for who we are. Can you imagine having people come to Kenya to stay, when not one Kenya can even dream of owning property in UK, leave alone getting that Visa?
what the heck?????ati theres not even one truck in operation???? then nairobians live by the grace of God!!!! i can not believe this...basi mungu anapenda kenya sana. yaani MPS are fighting over the cars they were bought and yet theres not even a fire truck????? am so ashamed for once...for being a kenyan!!!!!!!!!!aibu sana kibaki n yur group!!!!aibu sana raila n group!!!!!!! am in shock.
Useless Mayor how can you not know what the heck is going on and what the hell are you getting paid for?? If the stupid Govt can buy a whole bunch of VW passats why can't they buy fire engines and equipment for these firefighters.
they are safe - the people will return to work tomorrow, knowing the city does not have fire engines. And they will continue paying taxes. So why worry? The army will save Brookside, Transcentury Buildings, Windsor Golf etc .. from fire. So why worry?
what mayor is these we dont leave in the stoneage you cant do ur job who are you waiting for and from where its not the firstt time Ntv has reported over these fire and what about nakumat ur dint learn anything fool do your work wacha upuzi
This Mayor is daft alright. If tomorrow he get his big ass off that couch
walked to the embassies of Germany, France, UK, Spain, Italy, India, China and Australia crying like a baby (fake it!)....each country would immediately donate a state-of-the -art Fire Engine Truck to Nairobi....WHY? It will be in their interest to have a functioning Fire Station!
But oops he is sitting here holding useless fruitless meetings with bone headed corrupt Chief Officers!
It is not the mayor alone. There is a chief for that area, a DO1, DO 2, a DO 3, a DC, a councilor (who happens to be the mayor), an MP, OCPD for the station near there, the Fire Department ... and then the president, PM, ... AND THE KENYANS who live in Kenya. ON Monday, millions of Kenyans will go to towns and live and trade in towns that HAVE NO FIRE ENGINES... and will NOT complain or even ask questions. Why don't Kenyans use CDF money to buy fire engines and establish fire academies?

Your highness sir, holding such a crucial and vital spot. You don't have to wait for for your juniors feedback I totally disagree with you give us a break. Be told what? Don't you have a budget for this unit? Don't you check how workers in this unit are fairing and their challenges? Execute your duties wisely and do some radomn inspection, Its like you live in Malaba and your job is in Nairobi.
Robinson Njeru Githae, Minister for Nairobi Metropolitan Development; Charity Kaluki Ngilu, Minister for Water and Irrigation; Petre Soita Shitanda, Minister for Housing; Naomi Namsi Shaban, Minister for Special Programmes; Chris Obure, Minister for Public Works; Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi, Minister for Local Government; Emilio Mwai Kibaki; President of Kenya and Amolo Raila Odinga, Prime Minister of Kenya, ALL individually, and severally, directly or indirectly, bear the major blame.
2)I think that is why much of us get the JUST reward!.....This folks are trying hard! But they cannot do it alone!....the less fortuniate also MUST work with them! .wether you are IDPs or what ever that is.you know it! Youve lived it! & you know the clour of it!... why why?????****

Sweet no fire engine in a city of what 4MM? Is that well-dressed man the City Mayor? Sir, the fire department is a few blocks away from your office - you cannot walk down there and see for yourself? Someone has to tell you? Lazy muppet - resign and save face. Yes, pathetic!!!
Compare: The 600,000 residents of Boston City have 1600 fire employees; 1 fire academy; THIRTY FIVE FIRE STATIONS; THIRTY THREE Fire engines; 18 ladder Fire Engines; 1 marine unit; etc; etc ---- we are really doomed in Kenya!!
Doomed is an understatement. Like you so aptly put it, I've seem tiny little burroughs with more functional fire engines, fire crews and training programs than the whole Kenyan republic combined. Does anything ever function in this country any more apart from M-PESA?

What if, God forbid, a disaster happens in Nairobi JKIA today? Would Kenya wait for Dar and Kampala to send their Fire Engines?
What is the difference landing a Boeing 737 in Mogadishu and Nairobi now?
