Id say he checked based on the possibility of Hellmuth having a king high straight, with that king being the king of spades. In that case, he would have lose the pot with his queen of spades being beaten obviously. As a result of that possibility, he decided to not get greedy and check as well, feeling like Phil was trying to check-raise him.

its because this hand usually should not be within your per-flop calling range when/because

a) you are up against a much better player

b) within a 9 or 10 handed game and only 1 player entering the pot its quite a crappy holding because it has no connectness and your kicker (the 8 is your kicker to the K if a K hits the board) is easily dominated by better holdings like AK or maybe KQ/KJ

generally PH does not like losing ..cuz he is the best tournament and most passioned player ;)
