  • He ONLY played thi s beautoful song on PART of the 1984 tour..and not since. This remains the ony known video broadcast ever of this beauiful song --enjoy song :)

  • I agreed at the time that it soundsed very much to be a song written for someone's father and I still think it likely is. The question was whether it was Elton's or Bernie's father.

  • Very unlikely he'll ever sing this live again! The band struggle a bit with the backing vocals too as they're so high. Unusual for that lot as they were the best in the business

  • Always young dedicated to an older you and me (lol).

  • why does he rarely play his best songs! but then again almost all of Elton's songs are classics so I suppose he has too many to choose from!

  • @PopCultureSucks because he lost the voice that could sing these songs 25 years ago unfortunately!

  • I bought this on the album in 1983. This and Cold as Christmas were the two best cuts and they both make you hauntingly sad.

  • @casper1918 The temperatures up to 95,and theirs a winter look in a old mans eye's!

  • this song is about best friends one is amazing the other just normal unconditional love and regret hes gone, great lyrics

  • sorry for the debate but what a beautiful song.........best funeral song ever forget your

frank sinatra my way my opinion only

  • Very few songs make me cry. This one does. When he sings "And if one in ten can be that brave, I would never hate again" I just lose it. Elton is an international treasure.

  • Reminds me of 'Tonight'.

  • One of my favorite Elton tunes from one of his best albums.

  • "WE ARGUED ONCE HE KNOCKED ME DOWN, BUT HE CRIED WHEN HE THOUGHT HE'D HURT ME"

  • A highlight of a fine and successful album Too Low for Zero. His new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is great, his best since the 1970s.

  • Not released as a single in the USA. It fits right in with Saint.

  • @will295000 USA is not the center of the world. Try to understand. ;)

  • "And I hope that when I'm gone there'll be some say that I miss him" what a lovely thought.

  • This is my favorite unreleased Elton John song.

  • @will295000 This song is NOT unreleased. It is on Eltons 1984 CD or LP TOO LOW FOR ZERO. This was NOT a B side. Its on the regular album..it doesn tFIT with tone of the album but it is the BEST track on the album. Too bad he canty play this live again..he doesnt have the falsetto.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic He actually said it wasn't released as a *single* in the US, not that it wasn't released at all. Also, the TOO LOW FOR ZERO album was released in 1983, not 1984.

I agree, though, that it is a shame he can no longer muster the falsetto notes to sing this song, plus many others that require the falsetto range, though we can at least count ourselves fortunate that he can sing at all after his 1987 throat surgery.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Remove the 1984 with 1983 and you might have a decent argument. Get the facts right yourself.

  • @oldtealady That argument was already noted by two previous commenters. The point is not 1983 ofr 1984=- The point is this song is no longer within the range of Elton's deeper, strict vocal range so it remains a rarity. I do not expect to ever hear it again Live...and considering his voice..do I want to?

  • @DavelovesRealMusic

the best, most beautiful track indeed, it was the last song certainly for a reason, I was so amazed the first time I heard it.

  • @BrutoDaBurlyGoon I am always awed by this song. the few live performances that exist from late 83-and early 84 (the only tour he played this song) are a rare treat. A true work of melodic and lyrical genius. Kudos to Elton and bernie on this one.

  • This is great ! I know it very well 1983 !

  • Lovely song. Always think you my friend who died young when I hear this.

  • does anyone know who he was singing about , was it his dad??

  • @richbathand He didnt write the words....Bernie Taupin did. So it could be about Bernie's dad...but wer will never know....

  • @richbathand I always thought it was about a brother or perhaps considering that Elton is gay, possibly a boyfriend/lover. Beautiful song regardless of who it is 'for'.

  • wow ,even though Im a big Elton fan ,I still forget some of these gems you find on you tube ,absolutley brilliant .

  • The Greatest Melody Writer Ever In Popular Music

  • Remarkable song/performance.

  • How lovely.

  • BEAUTIFUL! one of the last songs when he had the falsetto.

  • Brilliant!!!

  • WOW!!! Never seen this before! :$ Amazing!

  • I think this is one of Elton/Bernie's best "unknown" songs. Thanks for posting.
