Raymond is a true icon. The only banjo player besides Earl Scruggs to have earned 2 gold records for his banjo recordings. We love Raymond down here in the piedmont. J T Davis
lol I simly said the guy looks constipated (Which there's no dispute I hope?) when he plays and get a hell storm of shit...lol I guess he dosen't look constipated? if you like his style then gitty up for you, I personal don't. nuff said as far as I'm concerned. Enjoy your raymond!
Plus most banjo player can't put all those licks together that fast because, one they probably don't know the neck that well, two they can't think that fast LOL!
Most jealous folks have problems with Raymond's playing. Maybe they are not creative enough to think outside of the box ? :) I've always considered him the best along with Reno. It takes alot of time to put your own spin on these songs and give them a signature sound that you can tell who is playing it. Most banjo pickers just sound like someone they've heard. But I could pick Raymond's playing out of a crowd of banjo pickers, because it is his own style! Create your own then criticize :)
I am a picker but not jealously, I look up to the non hackey players like Earl, Craig Smith, JD Crow...ect ect... that have a lot more "taste" than playing corny, hackey show off songs is all. If you like it good for you Roy Clark is calling..lol
You have "taste" but you disparage other players...players far more capable than you will ever be!! A true artist appreciates all other approaches...just ask the players you just named. If you could only do this, I am sure you would. Stick to the basics and you will get it eventually.
Sooooo I can't NOT like someone elses style, and this guy doesn't look constipated, and play corny hackey songs? give me a break. If you knew music or actually played you would know how in bad taste and corny this is.... wonder why he's not in "black face" that would complete the cornyness of it. (not sure if "cornynes is a word) but you get my drift. He might play standard breakdown bluegrass songs great!
"So I can't NOT like someone elses style" ? What? Everyone likes variety but when you insult another artist's style it is not cool, so that tells me that you're obviously an amateur with grandiose ideas of yourself. I guess other banjo players like Bela Fleck who list Mr. Fairchild as an influence would disagree with your lofty observations. Like I said, stick with the "basic" G,C,D chords and Scruggs rolls and you will enjoy your limited ability!! And you're right...cornyness is not a word!!
trkcop by all means go blow this guy if your that in love with him. Funny you mented Bela Fleck because his style if gibberish sucks as well! I think the reason he doesn't smile is he is soooo tired of playing his "Signature" songs he's about to puck. Save your ink and don't write back, really don't care about your man crush on this guy.
Dude I didn't mean to make you so angry by pointing out your obvious jealousy!! I will stop now, I don't want to deflate your ego too much. You seem fragile!! I am glad you are a musical expert, we need more of you around to point out the inadequacies of others. So go chill out and "smile" as you pick your banjo!! Remember to play that "tasteful" music!! Life is Good!!
Oh my god, I bet you have the niftiest pink flamingo collection in your trailer park! Can just see it plastic gnomes, and plywood cutouts of old woman bending over... Ohh and the silhouette of the cowboy with his hat tipped and one leg against the tree....lol Keep on picking your non-sensible crap that looses the melody half way though, thinking your all sophisticated because your hip, rock on dude! Different isn't always better, look at "rap".
Tracy...what are they putting in your water there in New London?? I guess you never go see Raymond pick when he comes to Albemarle huh?? BTW, I agree with you about rap!!
I really love Raymond's playing, but he's the only banjo picker I've ever seen who doesn't look like he's having a good time...c'mon Raymond - give us a smile!
I concur gtfone. I wasn't trying to put him down. I'm a beginner banjo picker and I know that I look like I'm constipated even just getting through Cripple Creek. Funny thing though, I saw him just last week at a Pennsylvania fest and he has that same "scowl" on his face even when he's just walking around backstage. By all accounts I've heard through folks who know him he's a really decent guy - and will always be one of my favorite pickers.
Mr. Fairchild is amazing, he's a great guy and is very sweet and caring to everyone he meets. He's one of my favorite customers at the restraunt I work at.
bastoid88: It sounds exactly like Dueling Banjos from Deliverance. Must have two names. Since this is an old video, I suggest this preceded the movie, and they probably renamed it for Deliverance.
