I grew up in SW....61st and Buist....I could walk to and from football practice at Finnigan Playground, up the alleys behind Dick's ave, in the dark, and never fear for my safety. I would not do it in the daytime with a police escort now a days....sad.

@camp168: I can relate Ed. I grew up on Dicks Ave in the house next to Mike's Gulf. Used to walk everywhere between 61st & Limburgh to Finnegans playground. Went to school at TG Morton, Tilden, and John Bartram. It was great being a kid in SW Philly. My pop retired from the Navy base / shipyard in 78' and we moved so my little sisters didn't have to go to the crime ridden schools in our once proud neighborhood. Went to visit a friend there in 99' & almost cried when I saw how bad things were.

This is the neighorhood I grew up in...1987 to 2005 ... the neighborhood that was never on the news, the neighborhood that was proud .... the neighborhood that in the end almost 10,000 families had to flee because of the shit that was moving in ... its a shame that u people will never kno what it really meant to be from southwest philly ... this makes me sick

@littlemoli: Makes me sick too! I grew up at 63rd & Dicks Ave. next to the Gulf station. It was great being a kid in SW Philly! Had friends everywhere! Playin stick ball and street hockey. Ridin' bikes in St. Barneys playground and to Tinicum wildlife preserve or Cobb's Creek. Never had a problem. After my pop retired from the Naval shipyard, my family was one of the 10,000 that left because this trash was moving in. My parents didn't want my little sisters going to Bartram HS the next year.
