I thought G's instrument was a soprano sax? This sounds like a soprano sax, the original was written for clarinet. This sound is a little bright for the original intent of the song. Not badly done, just not right for the emotion.

He's 81 going on 82 in January 2011, and hails from the small village of Pensford (population: 1,000) in Somerset.

I too agree Strangers on the Shore is best played on the clarinet. The clarinet has double the musical and tonal range of a soprano saxophone. Therefore, it allows the musician greater expression and a better experience for the audience. Finally, the piece was written by a clarinetist for the clarinet. @drbogo321 I just heard the clarinet version and compare to the sax the clarinet has a dark and old intonation to the song. The sax version is a more updated song with more life to it, it sounds rich and colorful. The total oposite happens witht he clarinet version, is dark, old and boring.

This is pretty, but the simplicity of Mr Acker Bilk's arrangement makes it rule. I've listened to this song all my life, not knowing it was Mr Bilk on clarinet. I like the fullness of this arrangement by Kenny, but for pure simplicity and striking clarity on this song, it's Mr Acker Bilk.

My sweet mother passed away 1987 on Christmas Day. It was her 75th birthday also.

She also had a version of "Stranger on the Shore" that had lyrics also, but I have been unable to find another copy.

Kenny G truly amplifies the notion "Music is food for the soul", with his classic brand of elegant yet enchanting saxophone rhapsodies. His sound is an extension of his soul and his instrument a delicacy that engulfs one's senses with subtle notes of contentment. I personally think that any artist who can eliminate the intermediary of "lyrics" in his songs and still manage to communicate a vision, a dream and the soul-stirring mosaic of sheer 'magic' to the listener, has got to be a prodigy! x

While Kenny G is no doubt an accomplished player, he is far from prodigious. Any reasonable serious music student can perform at the same level with the same amount of "soul" that Kenny G does. What he does is very rudimentary embellishment on popular tunes with a moderate amount of improv. He sets it against a muzak background and certain people really like it. Grats to him for finding a financial success.

What he really has going for him is his unique look and that "funny looking gold clarinet" he plays. There are plenty of people that don't know what a soprano sax is. He's a novelty and has found a way to exploit the crap out of it.

Without his look and the bit of luck that got him popular he'd be relegated to the shadows as an unknown and only moderate musician.

He is a very good saxophone player I just wish he would write his own stuff and not use other great artists work even if he does pay them. An author lives forever a player can be replaced by another in 20 years. Great song I really liked it.
