Correct, direct government spending on military or other consumables will add to the GDP, which in turn will help the tax base. However, if you are using tax dollars to increase that spending, how much are you helping the economy? Lower taxes and lower interest rates help spur new businesses, which in turn will curb unemployment and help the local economies.
High taxes aren't going to help the economy and in turn improve the economy, because they are hindering new business development.

Back in the 1950s and previously we had tax rates as high as 90 percent and the economy expanded because the money was used to pay for infrastructure, low-interest loans and GI Bills for WW2 vets. I'm not advocating 90 percent taxes but I am not convinced that reasonable tax hikes would be as detrimental as is being suggested.
