hay man i got a 79 bonneville and i love the car but its got an issue and maybe you could help me,. when i give it the gas when it shifts into second it cuts out and comes back a couple times then its like it dies, (on a good day), i can turn it completely off then on again but, other days its dead as a door nail for awhile after it drives fine for maybe an hour then stalls,. whats up with that?
Car drove good this past winter. 220k now. my family wan'ts me to get rid of it. Even the upper A arm is getting a rott hole in it. I hope to post another video of it soon. Last fall, installed a new timing chain and distributor when I fixed the timing cover gasket anti freeze leak. Had to replace a tail pipe and a muffler. I installed 2 thrush turbo muffs.
That baby started right up!! Great car man!! Keep taking care of that ol girl. If you ever want to sell it, message me!! lol I would love to have that car!! You should restore it!! Do you have any plans for it?
It is too far gone to restore. It now has almost 219,000 miles. The back part of the frame is rotting, and the lower door jam on the driver side. Rear floors are starting to get some rott as well. I will be putting in a new distributor soon. The mechanical advance collar is gummed up and wont move. message me, I can try to send you some pictures.
the 301 block isnt the same as a 455. pontiac built the motor to be light weight so they took out a lot of the block. the cylinder walls are thin in the non-turbo blocks. i tried to build one but there is no performance parts. low horsepower :(,i guess thats prob why they last so long.
I know. The other blocks are different. The 301 is a oddball. My dad was able to put in a better cam and roller tip rockers and true dual exhaust in this one. The carb was giving cold start problems, so I put on a edelbrock carb. Had to block off the egr port below the carb and custom throtle hook up. It now has 217700 miles on it. The accel coil help some for wore out motors.
301 doesnt come with much power the base model had 130 that was with a 2 bbl carb a believe then the 4 bbl with 150 like mine then the turbo at 210 a w72 301 has 180 hp..a 301 can be built up to have power though just need money i read this one guys dyno sheet his 301 was pushing 400hp
Good motors, but they were weak on power I think. This one has a mild cam and roller tip rockers. Being wore out, it probably only has 137 HP.? I think 301 has large/wide main bearrings for more wear surface. last longer.
Ya they don't have much power but they get the job done. I'd like to get my hands on a 4 barrel turboed 301. Ya they have big bearings. It is basically a small diameter 455 so there is a lot of cylinder wall. I've never been able to blow them up!
never blow up? . I have heard, the webbing in block support for bearings may be somewhat weak. but who is running them at 8 grand? lol. Rather than a turbo301, I would go with a stroker 350 something. There are no aftermarket parts for a 301. smogger motor anyway, but good for plain daily driver.
dude i got a pontiac bonneville 2 same year and everything but mine is light blue i call her the mothership haha

The best big bearing Pontiac motor was the 428

this car just turned 216,000 miles on the 301 and never rebuilt 350 trans. (change your trans fluid and filter)

I don't think it's much anymore with 200+k. The 301 is tired. It's a great car. Probably won't be around for more than a year or two.
