@MrsUncontroversial o_O Why are people STILL messaging me on this? We have been over this already his is like number 30. The topic was discussed and over about months ago.
Nice differentiation between Joy and pleasure. So, have you guys found out the joy of your life? If not, keep looking. Once you find it, it will last throughout your life unlike pleasure which is short lived and self centered. Nice advice!!!
So in the other video Spielberg shows up in a formal black tie/suit and George shows up in this video with none other than one of his famous plaid shirts. Now that's commitment.
In other words, the context George Lucas used those words in was completely interchangeable and not confined to the definitions he gave them. The same thing can be seen being done here:
"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." -Yoda, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
Most people choose pleasure instead of joy. But that's because they are too affected by others oppinions and they conform. Look at all the real great film makers Alfred Hitchcock, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielbeg, Martin Scorsese etc. They all followed their own passion and that became their path.
If you just want a job so that you get lots of money you're doomed to the neverending rollercoaster of pleasure seeking not joy.
George Lucas is such a curious individual. He's almost as interesting as his movies, maybe even more interesting actually. At heart, I think he's a decent man and an honest caring family-orientated person. His creative decisions of recent years have been derided but he says he's "earned the right to fail" which, I suppose, he has. We all fell in love with him for his early work, yet he let us down later on. But that's life in a nutshell, but still, he did his best and what he achieved is great.
George Lucas is a contradiction. He hated Cooperations and aspired to be independent; and yet he runs one of the largest and more influential cooperations in Hollywood. He literally holds a monopoly in the industry - and then he lectures people about selfishness. He's exactly like Darth Vader.
@ZephonTLucifer Hmmm...i think u got a point..BUT....dont u think anyone with that kind of committment, passion and hard work would eventually end up becoming? He holds a monopoly because he was the first and ALSO bcuz he diversified and preferred not to just rest on the billions he made out of his movies. Its not that he went on a rampage and destroyed all other companies. Its just that HE STILL IS THE BEST !
@coloradoflier Yes but say there are others in the industry who want to be independent - they can't. EVERYTHING is literally tied to ILM and it's just not competitive there are very few that can even hold a torch to it and it's exactly what Lucas had gone through. Say I want to make a pure CGI movie in Hollywood - I couldnt do it without ILM and god knows what are the conditions before you can utilize it. So say I decide not to go to ILM and create my own company - it would sink on day one.
@ZephonTLucifer Just because he owns a billion dollar company does not automatically mean that his intent is evil. He didn't get rich on purpose, he made a great trilogy, and then WE made him rich.
@ZephonTLucifer but unlike other corporations he doesn't sell out or harm other people. He loves building and making movies, unfortunately that requires a lot of money. It's not like he kills populations to set up a coke factory.
@ZephonTLucifer how does he run a monopoly? his business competes with hundreds of effects houses, including Weta Digital, which is almost bigger. How is success selfishness?
@ZephonTLucifer What monopoly does he hold? The only thing he controls is his own products. He doesn't have a monopoly in any industry.
"He hated Cooperations and aspired to be independent..."
Lucas still is an indie filmmaker. Success doesn't determine your "indie" status—being funded by the studios does. If Lucas funds his own films, he's independent.
There's this sort of trendy bandwagon bash on Lucas that's getting pretty old now. And most of it is self-centeredness on the public's part.
@stormko I can't speak for the greater population just myself and POV but I remember a speech Lucas himself made about his own contradiction. How he loathed and fought against cooperations only to end up starting a corporation of his own because in the end he couldnt be independent as he aspired to be without making such a compromise. I distinctly recall him actually comparing himself to Darth Vader in that regard too. So while many of you might disagree with me he himself would agree with me.
I suppose the story of Star Wars reflects his life, a young mans choice to fight against an empire, the empire being the parent the superior who wants to dash your dreams, and the death star is seen as the impossible task to overcome, I think that what makes Star Wars so good.
I would love to work for George Lucas I wouldn't be in it for the money though, the fact that I would be working for George lucas would be a reward in it's own right.
@RobertSamuelDavies OMG !!! Ur so right...even i used to think that even working as a help in george lucas' skywalker ranch would be a damn lucky thing...Hehe..
@RobertSamuelDavies I would be in it for the money. That allows me to pursue my dream and then help others along the way. Pretty soon you have people wanting to do the same. Imagine that!
i bet he hides all his money in that chin.

This was great. I hope Mr. Lucas takes his own advice and finds his personal joy in his later years.

He makes me proud to have the last name Lucas. It's weird how my life story is starting to turn out the same way he is explaining here in this video.
