This song is from Sephardic Spain. As I looked up,Ladino became such AFTER the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. Before the expulsion, it was mainly the language from the regions- gallego in Galicia, Catalá in Catalunya, with Jewish words interlaced. But -according to the sources I've read, the main language spoken by the Sephardic community was old Castillian, for this was the largest community.

I am not a Linguist, but I majored in languages. This particular song is in old Castillian.

Language is I think Provancal Pronouunced Provansial Provance the home of meeting of cutures Spanish Arab or go with the gentleman below Ladino. Askanasik comonality is Yiddish. Sephardic's comonality is Ladino .I know fFrench and a little Spanish. Go with Ladino.Ladino and Provancal are related like French and italian . I cant tell for sure. The accent messes it for me.

@Aepullo68 actually it is a sephardic song from Smyrna, I bring to your attention a historical fact "after the fall of Granada an Edict of Expulsion was issued against the Jews of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella (March 31, 1492)",there are many books written on this subject,so if you are interested just look it up yourself.A number of these jews moved to smyrna and other areas of the eastern Mediterranean. Btw I am a Greek from Smyrna and one of my mates is a sephardic jew,he's name is Zakino

Dear dastgahshur , the original song didn't survived , if you google around for Sepharadic diaspora songs detailed information about remakes of native songs is available ; they note that "o archontas is fragias" is a Greek traditional song .

It is true that medieval Europe shared musical themes , it is interesting to look up the various versions of "Falalalan" (i think it is originally Galician) , we are living in a small world aren't we?

To my knowledge the melody is turkish, from Izmir, highly related to turkish makams.

The lyrics are in ladino.

There are many poems all over medieval Europe dealing with daughter's and maid's dreams, and the sepharads had their own.

The song is fantastic and i love Mrs Azam but the medieval original is Greek, Sepharadic Jews "remade" it adding Spanish lyrics in 18th century if i remember it correctly .

The original title is "the dream of daughter the archon of Frangia" where "Frangia" is a derogatory term Greeks use for western Europeans .

*France in Greek is "Gallia" so no connection at all with France

@Alalzia But Fraggia is also a reference to the Franks.

In fact, the title King of the Francs, Rex Fracorum (in Latin), brings to mind the person of Charlemagne. It would also explain why in greek the title used is archontas in stead of basileus. The latter was used to refer to the emperor in Constantinople and witheld from the Holy Roman emperors in the west, whom the Byzantines did not consider true emperors.
