That's not an Alembic, it's a Kay Bass Guitar. I have one. I bought for 99 quid and I got an amplifier, bag, tuner, strap and plectrum with it as well.
That is definitely a Alembic Series 2 Medium Scale [32"] Coco bolo top and back Bass. Made for Mark by Alembic. AS davewentelteef stated;he has played several other exotic ,boutique basses as well. He currently uses the MK Model Status basses. I do prefer the Alembic tone to the Status, with Mark and also the late John Entwhisle.
Yeah, he is using an Alembic, probably one of the two longer scale basses Alembic made for him. Lovely tone, I wish I could afford one. Perhaps if I win the lottery....
Never grasped what diffrence it makes when he started playing, or anyone else for that matter. If a person started at 50 and became great at something that's all that matters.
No, the point is that most 'great' bassists who aren't anything like as good as him started much earlier and after twice as long still weren't as good. It's not just that he started late, but he got ridiculously good in a disproportionately short amount of time.
@JayDee11 With music and artistic crafts, it has a lot to do with development of technique. Mark, having started at age 21, has come a long way in a very short amount of time, which indeed is impressive!
Not an Alembic back then, mate. It was a "JD" or "Jaydee" and this was his bass for the first four years, afterwhich he alternated between JD and Status. Didn't really pick up an Alembic until the Staring at the Sun album, 1989.
Absolute crap dunetune42, Mark played Alembic before the Staring at the tour album. F.i. look at the it's over clip from the Running in the Family album. And for your information, next to Jaydee and Status he also used Ashley Pangborn in his early years, look on youtube for the living it up clip...
wow....i was exhausted just watching this video. marks got nerves of steel...what a great sport. i hope they warned him about the energy before camera started to roll.
w0w ich really like mark king, but but you can see obviously that these bunches of idiots have no knowledge of music... a real musician would never dance freaky like that too this great stuff, but listen with open mouth and would never ever play with the tuning of another musician...i enjoyed listening to Mark's playing but i got angry about those fools xD
Where was this show when I was a kid?...If they had worthy musicians like Mark King on every show I could have gotten started playing bass earlier in life instead of my late 30's.......bummer.
MK is a naturally talented person, and also unique in his approach and thought to music. With the love of performing that he has, it would be a very hard thing for him to call it a day. One point of fact though is that every interview I've seen or heard about him, it's always to do with his amazing bass playing, however no one ever comments on his singing ability. Mark has a very good voice indeed, plus to play like he does and sing too, now that's talent!
jaydee it was his voice that attracted me to the band to begin with .. long before i knew about his bass playing etc ... I ve always loved that voice :) !!
Yep MK has a good voice indeed. Chews gum while he sings and plays the bass at warp speed all at the same time. Who needs a Lighting Rig when you can do all that?
I didnt know he chewed gum at the same time until i saw him in concert live .. that was in '87 when they toured North America ... i couldnt believe it lol .. 20 years ago and i still remember that detail .. funny what stick with you ... and hell yeah who needs anything else with all that talent .. but what an entertainer he is lol!!!
Mark King has done a LOT of work with Matt Goss also (As solo & part of Bros), Matt always speaks incredibly highly of Mark & in his autobiography he released in March 05, theirs lots of interesting stuff about Mark King in there, Matt encouraged him many times when the industry was killing Marks love to continue, yet Matt said that a massive talent like Mark could NOT give up and be strangulated by the industry itself, it's very interesting.
Yes he's amazing. But considering he's around the 50 mark now, so has been playing continuously for almost 30 years, I guess that's why he's so good. Glad you like the vid anyway.
Trey Anastasio Is one of the greatest guitarists of all time and he did not start until he was 19 years old. He was originally a drummer like Mark King.
'As you guys know as 42."
