Great video but dammit turn ur amp up!!! Don't be afraid to be heard man when I play my bass I'm rite up there with the guitarists dude show em us bass players can dish out sick ass riffs too!!!!
Hey, pretty good lesson man, one question, when your bridging those notes with your ring finger @2:30 do you let it ring when you sweep? is that normal? I'm practicing sweeping in several positions that involve bridging but it leaves an annoying ringing sound, which is why I ask. should i practice with out bridging to eliminate the sound or is there a more efficient way to bridge?
yo dude, great video, im learning the sweep technique too and i use the thumb to go from low to high and my middle finger to come back to the root. Keep up the good job dude
Nice job dude, but I think you need to work on the strength of your fingers first, they seem a bit too flimbsy. Nice technique, your on the right track man keep at it
A couple of things, though. You probably already know at this point from the other comments that the index finger is, in fact, the pointer finger, but you might want to know that the note 3 frets up is commonly referred as the minor 3rd. So your major scale was actually minor. Just because you add the second note doesn't make it major. So you might want to look into the actual major. Hope you keep at it and stay curious, you'll get better and better every day.
Not to be some know-it-all, but 1st, you're on the 7th fret of E, not 9th. 2nd, the first scale you played isn't B Major, it's B Minor cuz the notes played were BDF#, and the scale you called B Minor isn't Minor, since you played BDFA#. Other than that, it was pretty good.
i realize i'm alittle late lol but dude this is the most helpful bass sweeping vid i've ever seen, thank you. just makin sure, but you don't exactly need a 5 string bass for it right? cuz i can't scrape up the dough for a new bass yet, and i have a 4 string. another thing, how long did it exactly take you to master sweepin? cuz i need a heads up. i'll be on the lookout for more of your vids, i like your style. \m/

id like to say yer a bit sharp, so i jus moved up a fret, other then the tunning, thnx, im actually learning to sweep =) goood video mann. and wh kind of bass yuh havee????..i have a 5 string, ibanez 405
since you are using your thumb going down, you can also use your thumb going back up, that will build streght in your thumb also that will be less movement for positioning .
in which a "sweeping" motion of the pick is combined with a matching fret hand technique in order to produce a specific series of notes which are fast and fluid in sound
You're doing C# minor first dude. I thought it was the first inversion of A because you kept saying major...The second one is like a Locrian arpeggio.
holy shit, i dont have patience for this, show me the fucking notes and ill figure out how to sweep it ass hole. fuckin n00b. ur not even on the 9th fret mo mo.

So I'm to be told by a combination of comments that in order to make a minor you must lower the third, fourth and fifth now. =P
This video wasn't about that, there was a clear and rather instructional example of how to begin sweeping on the bass, he spoke well you could see everything and it was very informative. Very well done sir. Natural born teacher.
What a bunch of snooty musical jackasses. It says "BEGINNER" at the top. He even says he is a BEGINNER in the video. Fuck off. Jesus christ. "Look at me! I know all about theory but I can't play for shit." That's how most of you people come off. Bass, or any instrument, isn't about how much you know. It's about how much feeling you put into it. You could play triplets with only one finger and I wouldn't be impressed. Fuck off. He's better than most people watching this video anyway.
After watching some of the other vids posted by this dude it's pretty clear he has no idea what he's talking about, and yet he'll ramble on and on regardless. This guy loves to hear himself talk. What an embarrassingly uninformed video. Don't act like you know, ask so you can learn.
theory is wrong. Minor is lowering the fifth of the scale so the first one is a minor arpeggio. the second one you are lowering the 2nd which is one of the modes.
Where to begin! That's the 7th fret not 9th, your index finger is your pointer, and the arpeggios you play are B minor and B half diminished not X major and X minor(or at least they would be if your bass was tuned). This video should be called bass sweeping BY beginner, not FOR beginners. Man, you got work to do!
Index is the correct name for that finger. I was actually wondering why he kept un-correcting himself, & using the wrong name for it, even though he obviously knew to say index.
Hey man the thumb sweeping technique is all by choice. weather your use just the thumb or finger or thumb. its all correct. a sweeps technique is all left hand. and you got that down
wrong. first one you show is minor, second is a mode of something or other. major scale is whole whole half whole whole whole half. minor is whole half whole whole whole half whole. if its anything like guitar sweeping, its one solid rake motion each direction, whether its thumb then finger, or all thumb idk. im still learning bass sweeping.
hey man... don't be bothered by any neg comments, those suckers are to chicknsh#* enought to try anything besides talk big. One thing though, check your tuning. I was goin along with some of the stuff and I think you are out. For the future make sure your in tune.
Yeah! LOL! There's actually lots of mistakes in this vid in regards to finger positions and the fingers themselves - I just suck human conventional language and would just rather stick to musical language.
okay man, i don't want this to sound super critical or mean or anything, but what the hell were you talking about. the position you were referring to as major was actually the minor position. i actually feel dumber from watching this.
Talk less... people learn more with a visual aprotch... ike show them how its done first, and show instead of tell... talk for somethings and when nessisary...
hey this is a huge help! id like to get a video up of me doing this so you can give me some constructive criticism. i think im getting it but im not sure. and when i come back up, i just pull my pointer finger up and hit the string from the bottom, instead of striking down from the top of it.
Thanks! Yup! I've been discovering that it saves time and energy to attack it in the way you described. Yeah, I'd be more than willing to help! Hit me up!
i do it a little different than anyone i have see.
i just play sweeps with my two fingers like i play anything else unless i need to tap a note i cant reach with my left hand.
i have been extensively practicing sweeps for a while. and they deffinately take some practice. i have been thinking about putting a video up on how i do it since i seem to do it a little different.
eyemran.... When you are, (At 9:10), you should roll your fingers, not just make a barre chord w/ a SWEEPING motion.... it makes more of a chord sound, not so much the sweeping sound your going for. hoped that helps..... Cody.
Thanks for the advice and it really helps! Yeah, roll in using your shoulder as the fulcrum device. It really clicked in my head over the weekend what you're saying and it makes sweeping SOOO much more efficient and easy! Thanks!
just rake down with the index or middle finger, less effort but for string skipping I prefer the shifting anchor where your thumb shifts to a string below the string you are on playing on or just follows same distance as index but stays flat on its side that way your hand stays naturally curved instead of being awkwardly open and you are able to mute strings better as far as strumming check out flamenco guitar style rasqueado techniques, there are plenty here on youtube
good man! thanks for the lesson, well what I try to do is to go down with the thumb and then go back with my middle or index to the top of the pickup.
Thanks! What I've been getting down is the fingerpick sweep method. Erlend is definitely the man to go check out to this extent. Because I play five, I have to learn how to transition from the B to the E by using the index and pinky respectively. Once you clear the E, it's pretty much smooth sailing because the ring and middle are strong to attack the A & D. Finally, the index swings up to the G. Descend rake down to reset your hand and repeat the motion. Simple right :)
really good video, you are a really good teacher and the good thing was you werent arrogant or cocky, because as i can see your still an improving bassist like me =)
thanks for this man, helped me pick up the scales easily and hopefully put my own twists in it
Thanks! I engage in debate with 'theist' 'atheist' 'anarco-capitalist' etc., but I just wanted to share bass ideas with the community and talk about music and aesthetics. Of course music and art is interraled with politics and philosophy, so perhaps that's why I can't dodge the 'philosopher.'
Anyway, thanks man! I'm not trying to be a teacher or anything - just share and help out.
Aww, thanks Dawg! You totally just made my day! Good job! I might post my progress on it, but I'm starting to get this fingerpick sweep method down. It's tough, but super fun and awesome once you get it down. Check out Erlend from Blood Red Throne! He posts on Youtube. He's probably the fastest metal bass player!
Personally for me using fingers (index, middle and pointer) is easier than using my thumb cause it helps with speed a little, but if using the thumb is your thing, then you may want to pluck coming up with the thumb(stroking up) that provides a little more speed coming up the strings.
first of all, i really appreciate this video but there's no way in hell you'll be able to keep up to speed if you pluck individually with your thumb. raking it back up would probably be better. i personally pluck with the middle and index fingers on the way up and rake going back down. skipping over those strings took alot of practice but i got it.
thanks for posting this video man ive been waiting for so long for someone to actually show you what notes to hit instead of showing off how good they are haha. and about the plucking up with the thumb on the way back up i think your meant to pluck up because guitarist pick upwards when they come back up although youve got some pretty good thumb speed anyway so it might work how your doing it. great video man thanks :)
i ont wana be like or anything because the way u are teaching is good and i have lerned a lot from this vidio so cheers for posting the vid
but when u say the first one u do is major its not, its like a minor diminished and the one u say is minnor is like a melodic minnor so, good vid but len ur scales first.
lolllll....good video man...haha. just a weeeee bit funny when you talk about which finger is which, but besides that point, it was great and now i know one more thing about bass. thanks for the video man.
yeah man...i have a schecter stiletto elite 5 and its a BEAST. i need to learn some stuff that you're showing, so yeah man, thanks for the videos. they help a lot. how long have you been playing. lol...the best phrase---- "using the economy of motion"
leyasu0 - No I don't. Just listen and watch and it should come to you. Don't think too much - art comes natrually to the human condition. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
you seemed curious on wether you were sweeping back up with your thumb was a mistake. My personal opinion is, there is no wrong way to do it. I will tell you how I sweep though. When I come back up I do not pluck in dividualy with my thumb. Instead I go up the same way I went down. Almost like using your knuckle, but with practice comes a better feel for it. Like bassist9069 said "sweeping is one constant motion." I'll warn you though. Going up the same way you went down is painful

What bass is that? Is that a Tune?
McStubby 3 years ago
SR 505! Great bass - versatile and affordable! No, it's not a tune at all - just making shit up
eyemran 3 years ago
Yeah its a very nice bass, the tone was alike to my tune, but either way its a very sweet bass.

nice tutorial! keep it that way!

protip: The index finger IS the pointer finger.
Nice vid though!
schwarg 3 years ago
Thanks! Yeah, I tried to make the corrections in the description box, but oh well....
eyemran 3 years ago
just rake down with the index or middle finger, less effort but for string skipping I prefer the shifting anchor where your thumb shifts to a string below the string you are on playing on or just follows same distance as index but stays flat on its side that way your hand stays naturally curved instead of being awkwardly open and you are able to mute strings better as far as strumming check out flamenco guitar style rasqueado techniques, there are plenty here on youtube

yeah man this video really helped me get started on sweeping
but i will say that it is actually not good to pick notes individually
i'm saying that from a guitar players point of veiw but i would assume that kinda thing would carry over
but still good vid :)

good man! thanks for the lesson, well what I try to do is to go down with the thumb and then go back with my middle or index to the top of the pickup.

not bad.. iv eplayed guitar for 3 years and im saving to buy a bass but when i get one ill be sure to come back... thanks for the help

Peace!
eyemran 3 years ago
yeah man it was really helpful, i practiced a lot last weekend and showed ma mates it in school nd they thought it was amazin
cheers for the help again!
Dunnfield 3 years ago
Aww, thanks Dawg! You totally just made my day! Good job! I might post my progress on it, but I'm starting to get this fingerpick sweep method down. It's tough, but super fun and awesome once you get it down. Check out Erlend from Blood Red Throne! He posts on Youtube. He's probably the fastest metal bass player!
eyemran 3 years ago
Really cool stuff man. If you like erlends stuff you should look up Jeff Hughell(especially his myspace videos) hes really talented at tapping.

Thanks man for the recommendation! I'll do that now!

Thanks! How do the T-Birds play and sound?
eyemran 3 years ago
Why not sweep pick using all 5 fingers like i do on a classical. It allows much more speed.
supaandyinny 3 years ago
Bass sweeping for beginners, that's sort of a contradiction in terms no?
smbstressfest 3 years ago
Language is a contradiction no? But sure, why not.
eyemran 3 years ago
not for beginner bass players... bigger sweeping
k4n3k4n3 3 years ago
exactly
flyingsnoop 3 years ago
Personally for me using fingers (index, middle and pointer) is easier than using my thumb cause it helps with speed a little, but if using the thumb is your thing, then you may want to pluck coming up with the thumb(stroking up) that provides a little more speed coming up the strings.
manyLejon 3 years ago
first of all, i really appreciate this video but there's no way in hell you'll be able to keep up to speed if you pluck individually with your thumb. raking it back up would probably be better. i personally pluck with the middle and index fingers on the way up and rake going back down. skipping over those strings took alot of practice but i got it.
jloch84 3 years ago
thanks for posting this video man ive been waiting for so long for someone to actually show you what notes to hit instead of showing off how good they are haha. and about the plucking up with the thumb on the way back up i think your meant to pluck up because guitarist pick upwards when they come back up although youve got some pretty good thumb speed anyway so it might work how your doing it. great video man thanks :)

i ont wana be like or anything because the way u are teaching is good and i have lerned a lot from this vidio so cheers for posting the vid
but when u say the first one u do is major its not, its like a minor diminished and the one u say is minnor is like a melodic minnor so, good vid but len ur scales first.

leyasu0 - No I don't. Just listen and watch and it should come to you. Don't think too much - art comes natrually to the human condition. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Hey eyemran,
you seemed curious on wether you were sweeping back up with your thumb was a mistake. Going up the same way you went down is painful
chris88bassman2007 3 years ago
Thanks for stopping Chris and I appreciate your comment. You are correct - there's no right or wrong way approaching the bass. Peace!
eyemran 3 years ago
dude that was awsome
ive been trying to sweep for like a year now and its good to find a guy who acually teaches u instead of just showing off
keep it up
ps. do u play the guitar?
