Great video and choice of locations! I got to take pictures of it just east of Anniston, AL headed to Atlanta a few months back, but no chance to chase because of its speed and unexpected road construction. Especially loved your last location.
I was able to get my shots due to being part of yahoo group, ALRAILS, and watching posts every day. I know there is also a southeast rails and probably groups for every area. It's a great way to meet new railfans and find out about special movements!
Norfolk Southern very rarely runs long nose forward, because as you pointed out, it is less safe due to reduced visibility by the train crew. What you may have been referring to was the Virgina Rail Express shots "VRE", in which there is a locomotive on one end, and a controlling unit on the rear car from which the engineer operates. It allows the train to be powered by one unit without having to turn the train before changing direction. Regardless, NS almost always runs short hood forward.
great vid, I love those F-units; the executive train is a rare find. Did anyone else notice the ripples in the sheet metal on the first F-unit around 3:40
i saw the ns office car special come through jackson tn with the 4 f units & 9 cars!, check out my video!

I wonder if that would be enough power to haul a circus train. It would be cool, instead of boring GE's

@franklinterrier Actually it is. I have the seen the Barnum & Bailey train led by 2 F7As and 2 F7Bs in ABBA configuration.

Because it's southern railroading...everything is ass-backwards on southern railroads. NS runs their engines long-nose forward.
It's not only unsafe, but a retarded way to run a train.

Are the F9s turbo-charged or not?
NSHorseheadSD70 4 years ago
Why do they run backwards? Or PUSH instead of pull?

I saw these units operate before their sale to KCS as Rail Cruise America 101, 102 and 201

Were those F's re-engined?
2GUNBOY 4 years ago
I think they were rebuilt with GP38-2 engines.
amtk019 4 years ago
The GP38-2 uses an EMD 16-645E.
They are rated at 2000hp.
2GUNBOY 4 years ago
@amtk019 Nope. They still carry the old EMD F9 engine, but have been massively overhauled and brought up to date with the latest technology.

Those F units (at least the 4270 and 4271) were re-engined with non-turbo 645s in the early 1980s by Morrison-Knudsen for commuter service on MARC.
