Great, it was amazing to know that you are self-taught. I notice that you dont play with score sheet infont of you at all. How can you do that. Amazing. Oscar
hi...fantastic playing but was just wondering how you record the sax sound with the backing track mix...it does sound like you got a bit of reverb going on ...
@galaxyblinds Hi Galaxy, I created the backing track using Aebersold Playalong, then pulled the track into Logic Express (Mac) recording software. I used a Morgan USB condenser mic (£100 great value) to record the sax only into Logic Express and mix it with the backing track in Logic. I listen to the backing track through earphones while playing and being videoed. See part 2
I've been looking for the Aebersold backing track for a couple of days now, as I've been asked to play this tune at a wedding in a couple of weeks - can you let me know which book/CD it's on please?
I have been playing sax for over 40 yrs. and I loved
your rendition. You not only have soul, you have heart. I would love a CD of your music, as I am sure many other people would. Keep it up, you could rank up there with the greats!!!!!!!
Hi Ikybenny, you can buy Jamey Aebersold playalong CDs on Amazon, but I can't find a legal download website. Improvising comes naturally to me, in fact I can't do anything else. I've been practising it for forty years in a series of jazz bands. Join a band. Listen to a lot of jazz. practise long and often. Good luck!...Ian.
First get the right sax for you, mine's a Selmer, then a mouthpiece you like with a good reed, I use a metal Otto Link and Plasticover Ricos, then listen to lots of guys playing with tone you like and try hard to copy them, and your embochure will gradually adapt to give you something like the tone you want. It may take a few months, but it's worth it.
I only use Rico Plasticover 2 and a half, with an Otto Link Super Tonemaster, USA, No. 8, just as it comes out of the box. That set-up suits my chops, but it won't suit everyone's. Just experiment. It took me about 15 years to finally settle on this. I've tried Lawton, and Selmer Jazz amongst many others.
Refacing doesn't make the mpc any better. When you damage a mouthpiece or the mouthpiece has a problem (a lot of Larsen's are inconsistent for example) you get it refaced to fix it. you may also do it to make it suit you better. if you want a refacing go to mr. 'mojo' or morgan
Hi Glan, thanks for the kind comment. Stick with it, and the improvising will come. Just try varying the phrasing. Play around with it a bit. Then try making a few minor alterations to the melody as you go along. Just use the melody as a template. That's a good start. And, by the way, 54 is just a youngster. I started to learn the guitar at 63.
One of the very first tunes I learned to play but even after four years I still can't break away from the melody into improvising. This is simply lovely to listen to, and just what I wish I could play. But starting to learn at the age of 54 I may have left it a bit late to get this good!
Great video! Excellent improvising, and a wonderful breathy tone on the lower notes, a bit reminiscent of Ben Webster. I play a Selmer Super Action tenor, and I don't think that my tone is as good as yours.
Nice job! I had a poodle that used to sing whenever I practiced. :)
Keep up the good work!
