The motor is based off a 340 block but has been modified for Trans Am racing. Special heads with off set rockers and a billet crank that has been destroked .35 inches making it 2.96 stroke instead of the 3.31 stock. It comes out 303.8 CI. Single Holley 4 bl was all that was allowed. It runs best of 115 oct racing fuel. The headers are custom made for this car and the exhaust runs through the original pipes that come out the right side of the car in front of the rear wheel.
Bad65. Sometimes we have to explain that Pontiac got the name from the Trans Am racing series and that the real Trans AM racers were all of the "Pony" cars.
What you hear out of the pipes is exactly what you would have heard back in 1970. It had the last of the original 303.8 engines and the exhaust pipes are the original pipes. It makes sweet music.
@ViperDaveKY, pish posh! next thing you'll tell us is that the italians named a town in italy after a mid 70's sports hatch (monza), that ferrari stole the name of their race car from a mid 60's muscle car (gto), and that the french named their small war ships after an early 50's sports car (corvette).
have you no shame?!
sorry, i'm a bit of a wise guy tonight. as an admirer of mr. posey and a mopar fan i say great work on your restoration!
you all are idiots!...thats a challenger not a trans am retards....jkjk haha i saw that on a different vid haha the stupidity of people just astonish me haha
@PeterMayer This is our car. We restored it from the ground up, It took 9 years to finish. We are in Lexington. It is a lot of fun to show it and we will be doing some vintage events later. Right now it is in Concours condition and we are trying to keep it perfect till we can take it to Pebble Beach for the Concours show.
@PeterMayer We were there the past 2 years. We won the race car class in 2009 with the Green Challenger and we took another Petty Built Challenger there last year. We didn't get first this time but we did get a first back in 97 when we took it there the first time. We also won the show here in Lexington and also at Dayton. We came in 2nd at Amelia Island concours DeElegance last year.
You sat in the #77 Challenger at Lime Rock. We just finished up the #76 late in 2008 and have won 3 Concours DeElegance's with it last year and finished 2nd 2 weeks ago at Amelia Island Concours DeElegance.
We did restore the #77 Challenger for Ken Epsman back in 97 and he has been vintage racing it since then. We might be doing some vintage racing with the #76 car later but for now it is as near perfect as we could get it and will be going to some shows with it.
@ViperDaveKY , heh heh... some little voice in the back of my mind recognized '76' vs. '77' but it didn't take hold. as soon as i read your reply i remembered. thanks for the correction.
what size motor is it exactly, what carbs, what kind of fuel, what headers are you running, mann that is one bad machine!

Thanks a lot. We had a lot of fun restoring it and that is the original motor sounding out through original pipes.
What you hear is exactly what it sounded like back in 1970.
