    How Can you Be Both?

  • @SaaRaHeruAmin , You're assuming that there's some kind of natural law that prevents your African & American categories from coexisting. But clearly they do in African American culture. Try starting from that end point and working backwards to answer some of your questions.

  • your wisdom is refreshing.

  • Being African as your identity, is something you feel inside. It's not just about giving yourself a so called African name, clothes, or hairstyle, then turn around and 'diss' a brother because he's not. a TRUE African identity stems from the fact that ALL blacks, whether on the continent or not, are your brothers, and should be accepted and respected as such, so if you can tick the above mentioned boxes then........YOU'RE AN AFRICAN!!

    PEACE!!

  • I am African American and I love that I am African and if any one has a double standard it is your people. Your people rob and is robbing Africa and claiming to be Africans as well. Arabs took 30 to 40 million African slaves and help the white people with turning African men and women to African Americans. Arabs have never had a home land until the invasion of Egypt which your people aren't, the real egyptians were pushed down in Sudan. Before you crack your mouth open take a look in the mirror.

  • I'll take you at your word for Arab attitudes towards African Americans. But I personally don't dismiss a culture that has produced Jazz, Rock & Roll and House and Disco music. Harlem Renaissance literature and art, the Black Panthers, Malcolm X, MLK and on and on. And this was all under very severe oppresion. Needless to say, that negative image of the AA (like the Arab as terrorist), is something that is created and used by the dominant forces to dehumanise and exploit the masses.

  • Twasing2006 you speak noting but truth, please stay blessed.

  • well said

  • we need to start making movies video games and etc about our history nollywood nigeria has the third largest movie industry in the world after US hollywood and india bollywood some of there movies are fantasy of there past lot of yoruba movie we are connect to that so we should do the same except for more of a hollywood style like 300 songhai and other kingdoms are easy settings i'm in school for animation i just think that be cool to see

  • You should try and produce and distribute a film like what you suggested. I'm sure there would be small distributors and your network over the web. Taking the first step towards your goal is the hardest. And the audience will be there for a quality product.

  • hold up this page is started to get fill with racist ass bitch ass motherfucker i got love for all people we should be common together aziz6979 go suck and on your momma dick not arabs but your super bitch with snappzback and anyone else who think shit like that of any group of people one of my childhood best friend was arab i wish i still know him so he could slap your slow ass smart man today i reply to a white guy who made a racist comment aginst arab now a arab guy racist to AA crazy

  • I think about the topic the same way you do. I'm originally from Scarborough, ON and I don't remember learning anything about AFrica in school, only from movies. I've been on a journey becoming more conscious over the past 3 years. I've learned so much history but there is much more needed. My parents are Guyanese and they never taught me about Africa either. I truly believe in Pan Africanism like Kwame Nkrumah because we are stronger together.

  • I grew up around the beaches area, then moved out to Scarborough. Don't be discouraged on your journey. Talking and listening to other people that have your interest and passion is a great way of learning history and staying abreast of issues. I've read about Ancient Egypt and the other great empires, but I need a refresher. It gives me some reference to my antiquity and helps me weed out some of the more ingrained lies about African culture, progress, etc.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Thanks for your reply. I wish there were more people around like you to discuss this stuff with. There was a Black Student club discussing this stuff when I got my B.A. but at the time I didn't think it was necessary and thought it was kind of weird. Now I wish I had joined and that I started this journey way back then.

  • Hey no problem. It's never too late :) And I'm always open for discussion. I've set up a learning programme for myself. Just brushed up on the Ghana -> Mali -> Songhay empires. I have some financial goals I'm working towards. So the time is always now to make change in yourself that lets you work towards a better you.

  • You are a very intelligent black man.who discerns the armada of forces opposed to black unity and conciousness. But i do think that most blacks in Africa and diaspora are already at odds with unity.

  • You are a very intelligent black man.Who can discern the armada of forces against the blacks unity in general. But i do think the black conciousness thing is already a dead horse.

  • I've blocked this user. But I'm keeping up this comment as a reminder of some people's attitudes when we want to rationally discuss African society or polity.

  • You just made my day. As a South African ,judging by the comments being made by other African Americans about Africans here and in my everyday life,I was starting to lose faith and I thank you for restoring it.

  • Brilliant! You got it! Hit the nail on the head. We only have to put our pieces of the puzzle together and then it will all make sense. I knew that was supposed to be in Toronto. =)

    Peace

  • $#@*!! This was recorded on my mac, obviously at a low volume. I'll try to amplify it and replace. Can you hear it at all?
