@snappythom Thanks for looking. I know it was about 15 years ago. He had a "D" windscreen and fuse top for me, "a guaranteed rebuildable Merlin" and all the templates and bending jigs needed. I talked to him about an MB Ejector seat and he got really up set with me over the performance loss due to additional weight. I was going to CNC-up some billet magnesium landing gear pivots as those were not available. The originals were lost wax magnesium. When he went in, I stopped considering doing it.

Those planes survived the War, 60 years of post war civil aviation- And end up crashing at public entertainment events.

Isn't it time to check the policies of flying display? Aerobatics near ground level are a safety No-No, close formation flying by pilots who only display that once or twice in a year etc.. An unnecessary threat to the audiences, pilots and machines. Too much sadness gets taken into that incredible pleasure that is flying. Take care, folks.

@JetMechMA He landed safely. We spoke a couple of years later and he thanked me for taking the video...he said it had cleared him with the FAA.

@snappythom Cleared him? He flew right into the plane that crashed. He literally knocked it out of the sky. I think we all understand that it was an accident, but I don't see how this video would clear him of fault. I'm not saying charge him with anything....it was clearly a tragic accident of close quarters flying. But the video is clear enough on what happened. Might be time for the incident pilot to retire from racing. Not from flying, just from racing.

@snappythom The video clearly shows one plane fly into the plane that crashed. It came up from behind the wrecked air plane and flew right into it. ....cutting off the tail. What are you talking about? Speak in reference to which plane contacted which plane. The plane that fell to the ground was KNOCKED to the ground by the plane that flew into it and cut off his tail. I think it was strictly an accident due to the tight formation flying. No real fault, but still...just sayin.

@JetMechMA The aircraft on the left side in the video when the planes make contact is Towmbly...he side slips into McDonald. whose right wing removes Ralphs entire tail assembly.....that causes McDonald to yaw hard right and Ralph to torque roll. tearing the wing off at the root smashing the canopy....

I was at this race and was watching this race start and saw this happen. It was very very quick and all I can say is he died living his passion. It was tragic but what way to go!
