They are romans but played as peoples of chanson de gestes would play it.. The whole movie was played like a midle ages show. Assuming the troubadours or trouvères couldn't picture what a roman soldier was like, they would probably play them dressed as soldiers of their time.
It's an intriging movie indeed. I like the style of it too.
I am affraid it's only in french language. I can't see there was any english subtitled version of that on IMDB. I found it in my neighbourhood media library in France. Maybe you already know, Rohmer is a film director and screenwritter of the new wave.
No. The whole movie uses imagery from the medieval illustratrions which would have accompagnied such texts as "Perceval"(decor, costums, gestures). In the middle ages "passions plays" were popular and the roman soldiers of the gospels would have been depicted as comtemporary soldiers hence the "round table' effect
It was made to look like an old "chanson de gestes" representation. I found it strange when I watched the firts scenes but then I found it was rather cool.
This is the final segment to Rohmer's film adaptation of Chretien de Troyes' epic poem, first released in 1978. This part, however, is not in the poem; and the actor in the sequence, Fabrice Luchini, also plays Perceval. Cretien died before he completed his poem (1191 A.D.), so it ended with an episode about Galahad instead of Perceval. Rohmer chose to make the film in a studio using "manqette" sets, suggesting paintings from that period. The cinematographer was the late, great Nestor Almendros.
A great traditional rendition of the passion. Wonderful music too! (And you can't get more traditional that jews with wierd hats)

I love the Arthurian legend, and this movie is intriging me. Where can I see the whole thing? Are there any subtitles?

It's not french, it's latin! but it's easy to understand, because it's quite the same text you find in the bible...
