Why is it that every time I fucking go to a got damn Buddy Rich video I see Travis Barker name? Their is no fucking comparison. Buddy Rich would babybag Travis Farter. I mean Barker.
For some perspective, this performance was when Buddy was 69 years young.
He takes the tune home with slamming about 10 and a half measures of 8th-note triplets with his right hand on his right side crash (with the bass drum) and left hand on the snare.
Try that at home with your metronome set at about 245 bpm and then check your heart rate.
(Oh yeah...first play about 8 bars of single stroke16ths at the same tempo.)
3:18 to the end: the best drum part ever tought and played on earth, should be taught to every child who owns a pair of sticks, just to let they know the difference among genius and crap
Enough with the Travis Barker talk. Buddy was a jazz drummer, Travis is in a rock band. I think that Neil Peart is the closest drummer to Buddy in terms of talent but he is a rock drummer too. Being a great jazz drummer takes a different type of talent.
@wlns I agree, but even if it was the same genre, equating Barker's level of drumming to Buddy's expertise is like comparing a skateboard to a Ferrari.
I followed buddy for 20 years and saw him perform 9 times. I was lucky enough to have played this chart many times in my high school stage band, yeah, high school stage band. I saw buddy smoking weed in his dressing room sitting Indian style on the floor in his underwear between sets during a matinee show at Lenny's On The Pike back in the 60's. I was in the front row at t that tiny club with my dad and buddy talked to me and the other 9 year old sitting at the table DURING the show. R.I.P. BR
A classic tune. Buddy was one of the main reason I began playing drums at 5 years old and am still playing today. I miss the man and his great band.
His music will live on for eternity. For any new big band drummer out there today pick up anything that you can find on DVD and CD. His bands all where and still to me are smokin. I still get inspired by his playing often listening to his big band on various recording especially The Class Of 78, and The Roar Of 74 to name a few. Buddy lives on!!!
@jlescelius Oh by the way. I was born in NYC so were my parents. I use the term WANKER because I have been playing drums with Van Morrison for 6 years and most of the band is from the UK so some words stick. But I do think that word is fitting to the whole Travis thing.
@jlescelius Hey. I was responding to the correct comment. Not you. I was directing it at Travis whatever his name is. Sometimes it can be misleading where they are in the thread, Please take that back as we are friends in a common cause. I have one of Buddy's 69' Rogers set's if you want to see pic. I'll send it.
@jlescelius I stand corrected....Your a jag-off as well as a wanker! If I left anything else out to defend Mr. Rich, please don't hesitate to let me know. BTW I was just telling a friend of mine the time I saw Buddy at the Starwood in Hollywood 1977. (Now a strip club) and Louis Bellson was in the audience. So Buddy had him come up and play. Louis was in top form and better than ever. Then the inevitable happened. Buddy finished the set and played Chanel one. I couldn't speak for 2 weeks!!!!!!!
Hey guys, the travis barker comments are just to get attention.
They know most of us are rabid B. Rich fans( FOR OBVIOUS REASONS)so just ignore these little shits. [For the record ]Buddy Rich is the author and finisher of baddass drumming. The best that ever did it 23yrs removed .....
Biddy Rich fuckin' played drums when Travis Barker had to be told to shit what he ate before....I really wanna see proof about Travis's midnight screaming sessions when he was 2 years old with the biscuit dinner in from of him...and when he got 12 he decided to play drums to have sex...give me a break...
There are not enough words in the english language to describe his (Buddy's)incredible talent. He's superhuman. Steve Marcus is awsome here, as is all of his work with Buddy.
If you don't like this tune you need your head examined. Smooth and energetic at the same time. It rubs your back and punches you in the fave at the same time.
I still prefer the killer Force band of '76. this band isn't bad, jsut doesn't seem to feel it as much the whole way through. I like Eric, but I still prefer the sound and lead style of Dave Stahl for Buddy's band.
Dear Lord, this is taken faster than than the first recorded version (1967). My God. Say what you want about Buddy. Or Buddy's bands. Un-fing-real. The lead is up an octave in places. And, no, Buddy is NO Slower. A genius. Maybe the band isn't as tight. But if anything, hipper.
Buddy seems a touch slower than when he was younger in this video. Judging at this rate of decay, I think I could have taken him had he lived to be about 170 or so. And in a coma.
That is a really smokin band. One of the better versions that I have heard.
@funkyleo1973 Exactly but don't forget his right foot, I've seen it up close and there's an amazing thing going on...you would not believe how picky he was on the pedals he would use.
There are some people that are so completely fantastic at what they do, there seems to be an aura around them while they're doing it. Buddy Rich is such a person. This cat's in another world. Thank you, Buddy.
I'm aware that stylistic differences mean that comparing someone like travis to Buddy is pointless but i'm afraid he isn't even in the same musical universe as "this guy"
I'd love to see Travis Barker TRY to play this tune right now, let alone do it at SEVENTY YEARS OLD, like Buddy Rich was here. I bet Buddy's grandson Nick blows Barker away too.....

@DUMBarranger56 I'm not calling people names. I'm referring to someone who is trying to put them self in or near the same category as Buddy Rich. Excuse me for the typo but if you are going to insult someone for every quick text or e-mail that comes out less than perfect, you must have way to much time on your hands. Wanker!!!
@travisbarkerkicksass are you shitting me?! travis barker is the most overrated drummer music has ever seen. i'd like to see travis barker even try to play in a big band. actually, i wouldn't, because it would sound like shit. i'll listen to buddy rich instead, thanks.
@TSSC1030 Yeah Jay Craig rules I had a breief conversation with him in '86 at Seaside Heights' Chatterbox bar. He explained to me the instrumentation requirements of the band and who had to be able to inprovise and other such details. It was pretty interesting. That was the last time I got to see the band
Simply the best ever... Show me any other 68 year old that can play like that. Hell for that matter show me anyone at any age that does. There are many many great drummers in the world, but this man set the bar extremely high, so high that most can't even see it. The man played at this level for over 55 years....how good would you be.
BUDDY was know for having perfect pitch ! A dear friend of mine had the distinct pleasure of recording Buddy years ago so they, CG CONN could calibrate their new upcoming device the Conn Strobotuner . Edmundo Zarria inventer of the device commented on his Afternoon session with Buddy, " He had PERFECT ! PITCH " WOW ! how kool was that ! Ed Man ( 35 yr year veteran Rock & Jazz Percussionist averaging 300 pluss dates per year, ) Keep Playin
Not only was that solo at 3:34 all singles, but at 3:46 watch closely he does it AGAIN, this time between the ride cymbal and the snare! Listen to that left hand! He keeps it up until 3:57! Absolutely the best musician of all time bar none...
I saw Buddy and the band on this tour in Lexington. I was amazed at how much energy Buddy still had at his age - he still could kick most drummer's butts even then!
what i would give today to be able to go see Buddy perform. anyone who got to hear him live was truly blessed. damn shame he is gone now, but with youtube, he will live forever.
I like this one better. A better handle on the control of the wholt tune. Alot tighter. I know the tempo as alot to do with it, but I just like this one better.
There really isn't a way to properly describe Buddy's god-given talent. Any drummer knows how incredibly difficult it is to play even remotely close to what he plays. He's like a tiredless machine.
Is this at RedRocks? It's interesting the producer of this film thought the horns were the focus here; they're just filler for Buddy. The snare-breaks at 3:40 and 4:00 are amazing! I think so, and I'm a guitarist (huge follower of Alex Lifeson).
this has to be one of my favorite cuts from buddys band. talk about power and excitment coming from every single player. killer solo by buddy's right hand tenor player, steve marcus and buddy himself is, like usual, in top form. man he could drive a big band
No matter how bad my day was or how good for that matter it always became a state of bliss when I got to see the great Buddy Rich. Starting at age 12 in a seat 10 feet from him on his left side to when I was 32 the year he left us (70-80 times) I cannot say I had a better experience in music than seeing Buddy and his band. I got to see them all and knew a few. Also the greatest timekeeper I have ever heard. He gave it his all to every audience no matter what he was feeling on any given day.
If any of you are in a band where the horn players don't understand that the drummer is the ENGINE that makes the bus move down the road. . . insist they listen to this. It is like tossing a rock across a still pond. The beat just flies forward thanks to the incredible Mr. Rich and this fantastic arrangement. Start everyday with this video clip and you will start everyday with a smile.
Excellent comment. He was indeed Dr. Time. I had the honor of playing in a big band with Louie Bellson at the drums - when somebody of that caliber sets down to play with you... it's like putting on that pair of jeans you love. It just fits - it fits right - it's hard to beat. These recordings are treasures for all of us - especially young musicians.
OH-MY-GOODNESS. i am sorry Vinnie, but forget every other drummer in the world after watching this...Buddy is the greatest. love the twist on the solo (i am used to the version on Big Swing Face from '67) thru all 4 bars, SICK. and check Buddy digging in at the end followed by with another jaw-dropper fill...this is epic.
oh man, you should all go have a listen to the recording of this on the CD "The Best of Buddy Rich- The Pacific Jazz Years." by far my favorite rendition. this version is a close follower though :-)

Boy does he love that snare drum !! His favorite drum set, right ??
gaspo218 3 years ago
Not only was that solo at 3:34 all singles, but at 3:46 watch closely he does it AGAIN, this time between the ride cymbal and the snare! Listen to that left hand! He keeps it up until 3:57! Absolutely the best musician of all time bar none...

I saw Buddy and the band on this tour in Lexington. I was amazed at how much energy Buddy still had at his age - he still could kick most drummer's butts even then!

Best version of this is on Budy Riches Greatest Hits. Tho this pretty darn good too.
wanderer1955 3 years ago
no, the trumpet solo was done by Greg Gisbert and the tenor solo was the late great Steve Marcus. not sure who the alto soloist was.
cadillacdude1975 3 years ago
Holy crap, is that Chuck Findley playin' that trumpet solo. I think he was about 19 years old then.
Great chart, tight band....and love those changes.
R.I.P. Buddy.....nobody could kick it like you!
logansGT 3 years ago 2
Chuck Findley played in the band twenty years before this...I highly doubt it was him. He would definitely not be 19, either.
trumpetman369 3 years ago
You're right, trumpetman, Findley worked with Buddy in the sixties. I read the liner notes on this page and saw that the vid was recorded in '86.
This "Love For Sale" chart was on Buddy's
album Big Swing Face, released in 1967. Findley, born in '47, was on that record and was definitely 19 when it was recorded.
When I saw the young guy in this vid, I had a brain-sprain and thought that he looked like Findley would have looked at that 19.
Too much bubbly the other night :)

The trumpet solo is "Gizzy" Greg Gisbert. It was recorded in 1986, Buddy's last band.

I like this one better. A better handle on the control of the wholt tune. Alot tighter. I know the tempo as alot to do with it, but I just like this one better.

Does anybody know, these drums went to the Smithsonian, are they being shown yet ?? I went there years ago, they were nowhere to be found.
gaspo218 3 years ago
There really isn't a way to properly describe Buddy's god-given talent. Any drummer knows how incredibly difficult it is to play even remotely close to what he plays. He's like a tiredless machine.
Brian.....UDaMan for posting these great clips.

Eric and Gizzy are awesome! Great Band!

He gave it his all to every audience no matter what he was feeling on any given day.

long live the Count Steve Marcus!

pretty cool. Not only is this great, but my music theory teacher is in it. He's the guy with the sax solo around 1:20. Except he had hair then...

OH-MY-GOODNESS. i am sorry Vinnie, but forget every other drummer in the world after watching this...Buddy is the greatest. love the twist on the solo (i am used to the version on Big Swing Face from '67) thru all 4 bars, SICK. and check Buddy digging in at the end followed by with another jaw-dropper fill...this is epic.
ggill1970 4 years ago
oh man, you should all go have a listen to the recording of this on the CD "The Best of Buddy Rich- The Pacific Jazz Years." by far my favorite rendition. this version is a close follower though :-)
