@muybridge54 This was around when Friz grabbed Foster from McKimson's unit. Pierce's name vanishes for about six months worth of releases in 1951 and I wonder it he wasn't drying out somewhere and they needed a freelancer. Friz did 'Rabbit Every Monday' at this time with no one getting a story credit.
I wished people would stop saying cartoons need to be like this now adays, If we had them, then this wouldn't be remebered as mush as they should. Shit Nowadays Aren't Ever Gonna Be Like It Once Was Ever Again. Is Wishful Thinking, But Stop It It Just Remeber These, Buy The Dvds, ANd Share Them With Your Kids And That Will Be That.
I don't know what that dog's problem was, those gophers were extremely polite. All he had to do was bury elsewhere or maybe even ask the gophers politely. But no, he had to pack up and leave because of too much pride.
I am wondering if "Bugs" Hardaway originally wrote the storyline to this short before leaving for Walter Lantz in 1940, but then Leon Schlesinger rejected it?
Bob Clampett created the characters while Art Davis ended up directing two cartoons.
Robert McKimson directed most of the cartoons featuring the gophers. Friz did four cartoons with the characters beginning with this one in 1951 and then McKimson returned. Chuck wasn't part of this series. You may have thought he was because of the characters being highly literate and well-versed, which is typically the dialogue that Chuck preferred in the cartoons he did.
Them northern dogs will risk their lives Just to get their point through just like this one

I just love that sick joke where they make it look like the dog's arm got run over by a car.

I first saw these gophers in a booth that you could sit in and watch a cartoon for a quarter. Thanks for the nostalgia!

I wonder why Hardaway didn't stay on... maybe there wasn't room for another writer. Was he covering for Mike Maltese or Warren Foster?

@ClassicTVMan81 Interesting question. I don't think so. The gophers are a little too sophisticated for 1939-40 characters.
Hardaway handled them pretty well here, though. I wonder how much of the story was his and how much was Friz'.

@jgbennie Hardaway did return for a while around this time and was laid off. I found a copy of his resume.

I was surprised to see Friz Freleng's name on the title card, since I thought Chuck Jones directed all of the Goofy Gophers shorts.
