One should observe that a) (s)he is doing the same operations of a traditional multiplication, but in a sparse way, different order and sums are done by (slow) counting; b) it can get tricky with lots of "carry" (which the traditional multiplication helps you on by enforcing a sum order that always gives you one final digit for every sum). Cute, but not much useful.

As a Chinese, we dont do calculation in this way, we use multiplication table in our daily lives. All Chinese pupils have already known how to use multiplication table, so some easy calculations we dont use computer or wirte it down like that, only calculate it in mind. I live in UK now, I and my friends are surprised that british people calculate some small numbers by using computer or fingers mostly.

wow i'm a mathematician and never seen this before, now i need to sit down and work out in my own mind how this works. How can you say the chinese have no soul? @grounce quite straight foward...if u notice the way he is drawin the 1set of lines the units, tenths hundreds place are indicated there. then the 2nd set of precisely does the same..the number of points of intersection is just a multiplication of individual places...and the addition along the diagonals is pretty much the regular summation we do in standard multiplication...not sure if I explained it clearly...

if you take a t1u1 and t2u2 as 2 numbers...do try both methods it would be clear

This is stupid!! try it with 89x99!! you will see that you will need to count 81 intersections in the worse case!! it might take you a while!!! And I bet you will skip 1 or 2... You've got to learn your multiplication tables guys, you can't avoid it!!
