I don't know why your friends complain over subs. I can read them and still see most of the action, heck, I can still see what's going on OUTSITE of the TV screen. Your eyesight is not limited to that particular line when you read it, even if you have to focus a little bit more you know? I think your friends are just lazy ;)
I definitely prefer subs. I hate dubs because even if the dubbing is good, you can't sync every single word in the whole movie = it'll look bad, and for me, that kind of thing can ruin the whole movie. So subs is the way to go, I'm not a fast reader either but I still manage to read and have some time left before they change to the next sentence.
Oh and I find it ridiculous that people are completely against dubs. And when people don't read subtitles I think"but it was a terrible dub" if it's an anime or "but you're missing out"if it's a tokusatsu.
Moral of the story: It depends on how it's done. Sailor Moon I won't go within 2 miles of the dub,Dragonball I don't care that I can't find the subbed version because it's one of the best dubs ever.
I don't watch many foreign films, only anime really, and you practically get lynched if you suggest subs at my college anime club. I hate subs, the voice acting is usually horrible compared to the natural sound of the Japanese voices.
That makes no sense, you dildo licker. You didn't even know me until up to like 4 days ago. If you don't like mokong, don't watch his videos. The only logical reason that you would watch his videos if you don't like him is because you like him deep on the inside...owned
i prefer dubbed films to having subbed versions but when i have no choice, there is only a subbed version, i will watch it, and i dont really care but i prefer dubbed anyway
I lot like dubbed because I do wacth anime and I buy by the set and not by vol. When you have 50 episodes to watch, you don't watch watch all of them. Filler episode that really don't have much to do with the story can bore you but you lisen to. The fact that you can look away for the screen and still know what going on is a major plus.
I really didn't see anyone give this as a answer to the question of "why do people hate sub" but one of the easiest answer is just being lazy or the fact of being forced to read boring books in school and thus making people hate reading for long periods of time. I have compared subs vs dubs and a lot of the time it doesn't really make a diff. in terms of what they're saying but the actor voice maybe wrong for the part ( I have really had distaste for voices in some animes) .
bout the boring books in school, THIS IS SO TRUE those dumb teachers are like "huhhhhhhhh why do kids not want to read books these days but all they propose are books that are as old as my grandparents and that are really boring, kids dont even have a choice, i mean mann whats is wrong with them
Ok, now I've seen the vid, and I would like to add something to my comment. For those who didn't got it from my last post, I'm from the Netherlands and most things you see here are subtitled becouse most TV channels send out american progams, and they put subs on it. There are a few exeptions and that are cartoons and animes aimed for kids, they dub those, and they are horrible. But the kids don't care about that. ( Damn, I got a lot to say :P)
Though I haven't seen the video yet, for some reason it's loading very slow( your other vid's don't though) I am defenetly a sub person. I like anime and I hate the way the americans dub the animes( not even to speak of the dutch, witch is horrible by the way) it takes the charm away the japanese gave to it.
it's subjective and depends on the country. In Italy we have the greatest tradition of dubbers, and our voice actors are really envied all around the world. Of course it's not the same as watching films in the original version, but it allstarted out during WW II with the Mussolini dictatorship and later on it became a natural, pleasing thing to go watch any movie that is not Italian dubbed in our national language. I'm not saying that it's right, but a country tradition is really hard to kill
i saw an anime once and the two characters were teenagers and in its own language they sounded like teenagers but with the english dub they both sounded like 40 year olds looks better with subs
Now, about the topic in discussion. I prefer subs... on everything. I prefer subs on EVERYTHING, specially in Anime.
I don't like dubs because many things are lost in translation, specially because of lipsynching, since obviously the same sentence won't have the same length on different languages. While subs can give you a proper translation without worrying about lip movement.
Also, I don't like when cultural references are lost/changed/etc. That's why dubs bother me a bit more on Anime.
I am a subber. I hate dubs. Unless it's for comedic effect. You must be disturbingly slow at reading text. Besides, foreign films usually don't have as much action in them as American movies. Like French films. They're really freaky.
At the beginning of the video I thought the synch had been messed up on my computer. Then I realized it was the intention. =p If it wasn't because of your comment to SexyGeeky, I wouldn't have figured out that the video is totally unrelated.
See, that messed me up. for a second I thought the timing was up. Man. I personally prefer subtitles over dubbing. I'm a quick reader m'self, but you have to be careful that it's not fan sub or something because half the time it's badly, BADLY done. See fansubed anime if you don't know what I mean. And Ju-on was AWESOME-subtitled.
Yeah... If the foreign film is live action I prefer to read the subtitles. Like you I think it loses it originality when you dub over the voices. Now with Anime I am both. I have no problem listening to the eng dub or eng sub. I am a slow reader too! So some times I find myself pausing & rewinding a lot. T_T
I'm dyslexic so I find myself rewinding a lot just so that I can figure out certain words. Like for instance 'the' or 'no'. It's confusing, but my brain has a hard time processing those words... along with a few others that I won't bore you with. *lol* >_>
I like sub titles. english dub, i guess its alright. I can only think of One it was a Mexican film. It was big a few years ago. I can't remeber the name.
your audio is delayed when it comes to the vid or something for one thing. I could read your lips sometimes but not all the time. I like subtitles better because the voice being dubbed over is alittle distracting it takes the essecence away from the movie.
i truly agree with you that movies that are dubbed seem to lose some of the same intentions and "feel" as it had in it's original language and like you i am a slow reader and have no problem seeing the action on screen as well as reading the subs but like most i am lazy. Emphasis on LAZY.But problems apear when more that one persone talks at a time like in some animes. Also i would like to say that dubbed anime, to me that is equal to and some times better than the original.
im gonna have to go with subtitles. you can loose the feel of the movie when you have some unemtional vioce going over the whole thing. as far as worst subtitling goes im going to have to go with CASSHERN not only did they cut like half an hour out of it but the didnt even subtitle half of it..... for the american release that is.
The Ring Trilogy (japan), The Eye (Korea), Versus (Japan), just a few that spring to mind right now, but if i really thought about it i could rattle off so much more
i think one of the first things i talk about is how I forgot to plan something to talk about... i kept the file so i might upload it in a week or two, so look out for it if you really wanna know :p
I'd have to say the reason I don't like having subtitles is that I have to watch it twice because i need to get the gist of what they're saying the first time and then i can watch the video the second time... haha. I do read pretty slow, but my problem is that usually the subs go past me way to fast so i have to pause it a lot...=P
see i seriously find it hard to believe you of all people could be a slower reader than me... if i remember right, i'm sure you had a few book collections in your "nerd" vids, i don't read books cuz i'm so slow it takes forever to finish them :p
yes i have books, yes i read them, and yes it takes me forever. i've been on the same book for about a month now and its only about 2 inches thick and im only a few chapters in!
ha, we're like opposites, we both claim to be slow readers, yet where I can't be bothered to read books but enjoy subtitle films, you will read books but don't enjoy subbed films...haha
I beat you both! I've been reading the same book for about 9 1/2 months & I'm finally in the middle of the book. The book had at least about 400 & something page. *giggles* We're all slow, "YAY FOR THE TURTLES." *lol* XcD
It's looks like the dubbing is way off on your video lol

All films on polish public channels have a reader, which is ok, but if translation is bad (it happens) it's a bit distracting.
I prefer subtitles. The world would be way worse without voice of Sean Connery or Alan Rickman.
