So, the reason why they need to be 2, well... 1 changes the light bulb, and the other to observe...( trying to say this another way...) How it represents the subjectivity of perspective, how people see the world from different perspectives (colors,smells) in another world of cosmic nothingness (cause its dark, so you cant see.)

I actually got the joke an existentialist is basically a philosopher meaning one would have to change it but one would have to observe what he is doing to collect and analysis the data recorded to see how and why the other existentialist is changing the light bulb.
