i have to say these dogs have a lot of history but if their still puppies be carful when their near a two and four year old cause i have one and the kids in my house are on the floor if she gets near them either that or she bites a lot is their any tips on how to keep her calm with all the sounds in my house?
Anything with a mouth can bite so you should always watch young children with any sized dog. I worry more about my big female knocking kids over than biting! She has knocked me over more than once. Shedding? My male MOLTS twice a year! Gobs and gobs of fur all over everywhere. Daily grooming during these times just produces fur "puppies" that blow around in the wind! But I will never own another breed. For me, they are simply the best!
The breeder, if serious one, will look for for sinus in the ridge and back. How ever this can be removed by surgery, but of course a dog without is preferrable, since it is pretty risky to put a puppy under anastetic. Just got a little boy last week, the happiest dog ever.

Don't recall where I picked that fragment of a factoid up but it does bear investigation if you're considering this breed for your next dog. Maybe do a google search about it...
@garioldwin That in no way means that the breed is aggressive, it is the way the owners brought it up that probably made it that way, don't judge a whole breed of dog from one experience with them.
Damn you Septic Tanks ... there is no such breed as Rhodesian Ridgeback!!! Ridgebacks were first bred in Pretoria - not Zimbabwe ands no-no-no they are not Lion Hunters - but used primarily to protect livestock and homes from Lions and other predators. A Large Ridgeback might weigh 120 lb whereas a lion will weigh 450 lb. The Boerboel is more like an even match for a Lion where some have been known to weighed as much as 350 lb. and has a 600-700 lb bite to a Lion's 600 -650 lb bite.
800pound cat ? try more like 600pound for large speciment and 800for a possible recorder holder-in captivity they can't grow this large in nature. what an exagerattion.
@DorxII Oh wow thank you for that..... I don't think i could have gone on without your very important input. God that guy who said 800lbs must be sooo embarrassed now you've put him right. I mean how caould he have been sooo wrong........... Dick.
@DorxII Don't you mean if YOU'RE that needy for attention that you feel you must correct someone about something that is of no importance whatsoever then you should seek help. Not to mention you even say there's a chance that one could be 800lbs! So you are indeed a dick.
wow I can't believe a ridgeback needs one hour of exercise each day. Right now we moved to a suburban neighboorhood so I don't even have a yard to play ball with him.
@PepsiPope find a park near you to run with him, or a dog park. If you take him to a dog park, make sure to bring something he can play with and try to exercise him that way. If he doesn't play with dog toys, then try the agility course (most dog parks have them). If nothing else, you can take him running in your neighbor hood :) I hope these suggestions help.
I have a rhodesian Ridgeback , Jagster ( Hunter in African) . We have loved her since she was a puppy and she is the sweetest dog ever and would never ever take a bite of us, but if someone was in our house not spost to be.... BIG TROUBLE WITH JAGSTER!

My ridgeback responds intuitively to changing commands. Highly adaptable to my whims.
-training
Ridgebacks respond better to intuititive owners than to authoritarian ones. Mine is eager to please, so I hardly ever have to keep her in line. Never needed rigid training, just rapport.
-No fear
They're timid, often.
-independent minded
Well, they're deep thinkers, but not independent, as such. Mine never goes off on her own.
@tuguybear i think a ridgeback without a ridge is bad quility or a mix cuz ridgeback are a cross of many dogs but apparentantly what gives them the ridge is the mongrel dogs which were found in the african tribes they breed them into the breed that what i was told by a ridgeback Enthusiast
@zafeamoon I can't make any sense of what you say.The ridge is from mongrel dogs, but a ridgeback without the ridge is bad quality?.What?.They where reputed to be for hunting lions,so what possible difference could a minor cosmetic difference make?.Do you think maybe lions are more afraid of dogs with a ridge?.
@tuguybear well all breeds have a standard and a good quility dog should meet this standard . If its a pure breed ridgeback and has no ridge then thats a genetic fault and that ridgeback is poor quilite and comes from bad stock , and anyway if yr discussing hunting i think a ridgeback which is a better breed will have stronger hunting instincts . how they produce good quilite dogs are by elimating the bad breeds and only using the dogs who could do their job .
@zafeamoon Yes all breeds have a standard, but it seems alot of the standard is based on unimportant cosmetic things and sometimes on really bad things. The ridge on a ridgeback is worst case scenerio a deletarius fault which can lead to a hole in it's back that goes straight to the spinal cord. One word for the "pure breeding of dogs" .RIDICULUS.
it would be nice for funjester to do research and tell the truth.....The original breed standard was drafted by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), in 1922
My Ridgeback obviously hasn't seen this vid ... he's the one back in the pickup fast asleep. Oh, and for those who say they aren't good with children I beg to differ ... my boy loves them ... but he couldn't eat a whole one.
Not good with young children? When I was born my parents owned 2 Rhodesians, and they never left my side. I used to take naps on Rajah the older male. Rajah died when I was six and Rani died in 2007. They are great companions and I will never forget them.
@17107Jon17107 Listen to what he says in the video -.-' he just said that some may be a bit too energetic and enthousiastic for younger children ( due to there size ). he never said the dogs arent good with them.
@17107Jon17107 your coment describe exactly how RR are with childen, but they can be rude when they are playing. they can trough a kid to the floor easily, especially if the kid isn´t used to play with big dogs. however their outstanding with their young masters (the kids).
They are great with kids, that is true! And they are very careful when playing with kids. But peharps they are refering to the fact that, sometimes, the rhodesian ridgebacks being unable to perceive their own power.
@17107Jon17107 I too know alot of ridgebacks that are great with children, however, mine, (sadly on his last legs now) cannot be trusted with little kids. There is noway I would ever leave him alone with kids. He's incredibly 'soft' and loving to everyone, (except intruders lol), but with little kids, he does seem to behave differently, and all it takes is one snap from a dog so large.
I don't know, I think if you own big dogs, you need to be aware of the constant potential danger they can pose.
They're lovely dogs, boy can they be lazy if you let them. They're not like other dogs where they hound you to go outside they're content laying on the couch. This isn't to say that they don't enjoy exercise though, when they're out they're super energetic.
my Ridgeback doesn't have that much Greyhound idt... it looks like the original and the mastiff... he is my massive big old baby, nicest dog to people but other animals... thats another story...
mine had severe HD, they thought she wans't going to get 1 year, but in the end she lived for 10 years. untill the really cold winter of 2010, she always wanted to run so bad, even if she had much pain, she loved the snow.
we let her have an awesome winter and in the summer we put her to sleep.
wonderfull bread, they look a little majestic i think.
but i would recommend to have a crossed RR, because the chance that they have HD is very big.
@j6cb nah they're smart they just play you i do admit i think a lab is a littler more intelligent but i wouldn't call them unintelligent and there are plenty of dog breeds out there that are far worse in terms of intelligence. That's ok though they're so lovable and have such a great personality anyway.
@meghanxx4 yeah thats true, i have a pointer as well and he's too intelligent lol so i guess i feel like we have two extremes; but you are right they are loveable. thanks.
I wish, I wish, somewhere there was footage of these dogs actually working a lion. I've read some vivid descriptions but no one seems to have it on camera. Supposedly, they deploy on either side of the cat and tag-team, body-slam it whenever it's looking the other way
@FunJester My Axel didn't loose hardly any fur. He was a great dog, very protective of me. I heard they have issues with tumors and my Axel passed at the age of 14.5 with a tumor the size of a football that went undiscovered in his abdomen. I don't hear any mention of tumors in this video.
@xpaupx they shed a little bit when winter gets close but's barely anything. They are definately one the least shedding dogs you could get. My cats shed more.
@xpaupx they shed very little. The problem with their hair is that on one end it is hook shaped, so the little hair they do shed sticks to anything. They are very clean dogs though, similar to Basenji's and weimeraners, they're "cat-like" very clean and odorless if they have occasional baths. They "HAVE" to be walked or they will tear your house up, very energetic dogs.
@xpaupx when I got my boy I was told he would only shed twice a year ... trouble was they didn't tell me the shedding periods last 6 months LOL ... although they're short haired you really have to brush them very regularly

Hey guys, i live in the country so have plenty of space for dogs, i'm active so they will have lots of exercise but i'm stuck about which breed to get a German shepherd or a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Can anyone give me advice or help me with my choice? Thankyou :)
@stormtroopersarecool I have owned both RR and a GS and for me personally I would choose RR hands down. But just do your HW on each breed. Size wise, they are pretty similar. Both breeds are natural guardians. But I will say my RR wasn't big on barking but when he did there was something or somewhere there. RR to me are easier to read also but if you have more questions, just hit me up.
Hey guys, i live in the country so have plenty of space for dogs, i'm active so they will have lots of exercise but i'm stuck about which breed to get a German shepherd or a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Can anyone give me advice or help me with my choice? Thankyou :)
@bigballer621 some do, some don't. Alot of rhodesians hate water and are usually the ones without webbed feet, some, like mine has webbed feet and loves the water. If you look into rhodesians they are described as cat like, very clean and hate water, but some do like water. Either way they are very very clean dogs, shed very little and don't smell doggy like most dogs.
these really are the perfect dogs. very loving towards family, good guard dogs, they aren't know for biting unless pushed. I've had people trespass on my property and they will most likely just corner the person until a family member shows up to deal with the trespasser. When they get pissed off and bark and show teeth it's enough to scare anyone away.
The best dog EVA! no dog can beat the RR! i have a male who is one (2 in october) and they are the best! im 12 and i get on great with him :) luv my baby xx
had a staffy cross with a ridgeback.. was the best dog i ever had. lived for 15 years. very intelligent and very very strong. great around kids and most people. but id hate to be the other dog up against one. very protective as well. great dog.
They aren't joking about being able to run long distances...my RR saw a deer in my backyard and was chasing it for hours. Real pain in the butt to try to find her in thick woods i can tell you that.
I have a 2 year old Rhodesian, great with people and little kids, he's a bit protective towards other dogs and people but I don't think he would ever bite anything unless seriously provoked. If he did go into attack mode I wouldn't want to be the recipient...they are very strong dogs.
@JUGGERNAUNT1000 / Yes, JUGGERNAUNT1000, I know that lions can climb trees but they don't do it very well and generally avoid doing so. If you look for it you can find a video on Youtube of a lioness that went up a tree to steal a leopard's kill. On the way down she slipped, got hung up in the branches, broke her back and died. She was found hanging lifeless upside down from the branches the next morning.
Best dog i have ever had is a rhodesian ridgeback is an extremely clever dog and i personally use mine for hunting rabbits and have hunted deer with it before yest is so clever and well behaved it will sit down starring at its dish full of its food until i tell it to eat! amazing seeings as i am only 16 and took it in after it was thrown into a ditch from a moving car as a pup
@LI0NHOUND Looks like you did a good deed and got rewarded with a good dog. I hope the jerk who dumped the pup in a ditch wrapped his car around a tree a mile down the road and died. That's what he deserves.
great vid thanks for posting, mr kingblueman, it IS THEIR natural instinct, they are african dogs, hunters protectors, hunters HUNT is is their nature, they are truely mans best friend.
@8iHeartU8 If Your an Experienced Dog Trainer its Perfect dog but if no not for yhu its very hard headed n independent its tired-less , eats lot very needy dog of attention
The Lion Hunter??? First of, the hunters use about 20 of these dogs to corner the lion. second, most of these attempts are either failures or result in death of one of the dogs. They are probably the best breeds of dogs but as far as "Lion Hunters".....not quite.
the RR that try to hunt lions are trained by humans to do so. this does not make it a "lion hunter" because it's not their natural instinct. furturemore, they don't kill the lion they try to corner it until the HUNTER can kill it. They are more of a distraction than anything else. Although they are probably the most fit of any dog, the only thing they'll get credit for is their bravery.
If I didn't have a enough knowledge of these dogs I wouldn't comment. but theres no use arguing with a bunch of dog-lovers. you believe what you want and so will I.
@gingabee yea allot of people think pitbulls are the ultimate brusers but the ridgeback is extremly loyal and allot stonger and has a stronger bite strength
@godfatherjew55 - Oh really? When i was checking the records for the hardest bites it showed "Rottweilers, german shepherd, THEN pitbull". No where in this top three does it mention a ridgeback. I'm pretty sure a pit would murder these dogs.
@BobRocksBaby you even don't know how small is a pitbull, they have 35kg.. ridgebacks have around 50-55kg.. and they have strong jaws because of the bull teriers... and yeah..make sure before you write something down..
i have a ridgeback he is my best friend he loves his walks and i let him off the lead and let him run around for an hour. people always complement on his muscular chest. they all say what did u do to his back hahaha. also is a very good guard dog. he bailed my big brother in the back yeard b4 and tried to attack him (he doesnt live with us) (we werent home)

Anything with a mouth can bite so you should always watch young children with any sized dog. I worry more about my big female knocking kids over than biting! She has knocked me over more than once. The breeder, if serious one, will look for for sinus in the ridge and back. How ever this can be removed by surgery, but of course a dog without is preferrable, since it is pretty risky to put a puppy under anastetic. Just got a little boy last week, the happiest dog ever.

I seem to remember some kind of relationship between the ridge and spine in this breed and how, when breeders go for more exaggerated ridges, there can be spinal developmental problems in pups. Don't recall where I picked that fragment of a factoid up but it does bear investigation if you're considering this breed for your next dog. Maybe do a google search about it...

They're not hunting dogs in the way most Americans hunt. Those are more scent hounds or gun dogs.
Ridgebacks would be excellent at taking care of the hog problem, though. Or at least hunting them down.

they're such amazing dogs!
mine had severe HD, they thought she wans't going to get 1 year, but in the end she lived for 10 years. untill the really cold winter of 2010, she always wanted to run so bad, even if she had much pain, she loved the snow.
we let her have an awesome winter and in the summer we put her to sleep.
wonderfull bread, they look a little majestic i think.
but i would recommend to have a crossed RR, because the chance that they have HD is very big.

LOL i have a RR which is a huge boy but it is the most cowardly and least intelligent dog i have ever owned haha. They are loyal though :)
j6cb 1 year ago
@j6cb nah they're smart they just play you i do admit i think a lab is a littler more intelligent but i wouldn't call them unintelligent and there are plenty of dog breeds out there that are far worse in terms of intelligence. That's ok though they're so lovable and have such a great personality anyway.
meghanxx4 1 year ago
@meghanxx4 yeah thats true, i have a pointer as well and he's too intelligent lol so i guess i feel like we have two extremes; but you are right they are loveable. thanks.

@FunJester
I wish, I wish, somewhere there was footage of these dogs actually working a lion. I've read some vivid descriptions but no one seems to have it on camera. Supposedly, they deploy on either side of the cat and tag-team, body-slam it whenever it's looking the other way
pinz2022 1 year ago
@FunJester My Axel didn't loose hardly any fur. He was a great dog, very protective of me. I heard they have issues with tumors and my Axel passed at the age of 14.5 with a tumor the size of a football that went undiscovered in his abdomen. I don't hear any mention of tumors in this video.

@xpaupx they shed a little bit when winter gets close but's barely anything. They are definately one the least shedding dogs you could get. My cats shed more.
landis69 1 year ago
@xpaupx they shed very little. The problem with their hair is that on one end it is hook shaped, so the little hair they do shed sticks to anything. They are very clean dogs though, similar to Basenji's and weimeraners, they're "cat-like" very clean and odorless if they have occasional baths. They "HAVE" to be walked or they will tear your house up, very energetic dogs.
landis69 1 year ago
@xpaupx no they dont they have shot hair
hgec1995 1 year ago
@xpaupx when I got my boy I was told he would only shed twice a year ... trouble was they didn't tell me the shedding periods last 6 months LOL ... although they're short haired you really have to brush them very regularly
Lytinweedle 1 year ago
@xpaupx no, they losse a little amount of hair bitches and a few more the dogs.

Hey guys, i live in the country so have plenty of space for dogs, i'm active so they will have lots of exercise but i'm stuck about which breed to get a German shepherd or a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Can anyone give me advice or help me with my choice? Thankyou :)
stormtroopersarecool 1 year ago
@stormtroopersarecool I have owned both RR and a GS and for me personally I would choose RR hands down. But just do your HW on each breed. Size wise, they are pretty similar. Both breeds are natural guardians. But I will say my RR wasn't big on barking but when he did there was something or somewhere there. RR to me are easier to read also but if you have more questions, just hit me up.

Some people cull puppies if they don't have a "ridge", which ironically has been compared to a form of canine spina bifeda.

landis69 1 year ago
@landis69 um yea they do... im pretty sure all dogs do.
meghanxx4 1 year ago
@meghanxx4 could you be more specific? I'm not sure what statement you are responding to.
landis69 1 year ago

JackKangaroo1 1 year ago
Well, actually lions never weigh seven or eight hundred pounds [except for a few real fatties in zoos] and they don't climb trees.

The Lion Hunter??? First of, the hunters use about 20 of these dogs to corner the lion. second, most of these attempts are either failures or result in death of one of the dogs. They are probably the best breeds of dogs but as far as "Lion Hunters".....not quite.
Kingblueman13 2 years ago
do you know any dog that does hunt lions then? The RR is more of a lion hunter than any other animal so therefor its considered a lion hunter
BerendBroekhoff 2 years ago 3
the RR that try to hunt lions are trained by humans to do so. this does not make it a "lion hunter" because it's not their natural instinct. furturemore, they don't kill the lion they try to corner it until the HUNTER can kill it. They are more of a distraction than anything else. Although they are probably the most fit of any dog, the only thing they'll get credit for is their bravery.
Kingblueman13 2 years ago
more of a Lion hunter than any other dog I know of. Its not just theri bravery but also their endurance

you need to read up on the rr. when thay are good rr's thay'd only use two or three to a lion
gingabee 2 years ago 5
If I didn't have a enough knowledge of these dogs I wouldn't comment. but theres no use arguing with a bunch of dog-lovers. you believe what you want and so will I.
Kingblueman13 2 years ago
@gingabee yea allot of people think pitbulls are the ultimate brusers but the ridgeback is extremly loyal and allot stonger and has a stronger bite strength
godfatherjew55 1 year ago
@godfatherjew55 - Oh really? When i was checking the records for the hardest bites it showed "Rottweilers, german shepherd, THEN pitbull". No where in this top three does it mention a ridgeback. I'm pretty sure a pit would murder these dogs.
BobRocksBaby 1 year ago
@BobRocksBaby you even don't know how small is a pitbull, they have 35kg.. ridgebacks have around 50-55kg.. and they have strong jaws because of the bull teriers... and yeah..make sure before you write something down..
