  • is It backup saved data??

  • @TheRaker55 It's illegal to list them on eBay or Amazon since it's considered a device for pirates.

  • Can you mod it and play large games like Conker?

  • It's still very useful! I would go to all my friends houses and borrow their games and put them on a zip disc. I just borrowed a couple games from my neighbor recently and he wanted them back three days later! That's not enough time to beat Diddy kong Racing or Goldeneye.

  • I've been trading on the Retro Gamer forums and will soon be receiving a similar device called CD64. Does it work in a similar way?

  • Retro homebrew is where its at...

  • Hey man, is it possible to download N64 roms from the internet, put them on the disk, and play them? Please answer, it would be much appreciated!

  • @GCJMStudios

Yes you can, it can also play prototypes and unreleased games :)

  • lol i researched this thing and it counts as pirating... its ilegal to use xD!

  • @jogoslogo How can it be pirating if you own the original cart and just have it saved on to the Z64 via Zip Disc. It's definitely not illegal to use. Get your facts straight.

  • @remixnick dude calm the fuck down he says that he use to rent games and then copy them... THAT is illegal nowadays dipshit!

  • @jogoslogo "i researched this thing" you were meaning the z64 system itself not the process of renting games and copying them. Don't give me any of your bullshit, you clearly don't know enough about the whole backup process and the laws involved.

  • @remixnick calm the fuck down... i bet secretly your just some litlle 10 year boy

  • @jogoslogo I'm very very calm, and I'm 22, not that it matters.

  • Is this rare? I didnt see any on ebay.

  • @SkoogGaming They're fairly rare. Supposedly, they're illegal to list on eBay since they are a basically a pirating machine.

  • @DlNKYDANA Do you happend to know how much they are worth?

  • :D You sound like Chris from Family Guy!

  • maybe if your a lazy fuck that can't put in a cartridge -_-

  • Isn't there a way to put a regular hard drive into where the zip disk drive goes?

  • The Z64 shows that Turok2 ist 128Mbit, but in my opinion its 256Mbit?!

  • where can i find this

  • You have the same TV as me! :D

  • Where can I buy this?

  • @DanielChristy19 Oh ok, I asked because if I end up getting one, I wouldn't be sure if Zip discs would still be sold today.

  • What about CD-R?

  • were can i buy one.

  • thats megabits

  • I have one of these sitting in storage along with a Super UFO backup unit. I'll need to pull these things out of storage and put them back in the house again. After all these years I wonder if the Zip Disks I have games on have any data on them.

  • Megabits (Mb) man, not MegaBytes (MB),

  • I actually used to own a few of these! I ordered two from z64.com back in the day, and one more for a friend of mine. The price was $375 a piece at the time. It is noteworthy to add that the device takes standard SIMM memory and can be upgraded. Initially, the BIOS did not have onscreen menu, but eventually they released an update that allowed it. 2.8e if I remember correctly. Really nice device and a really active scene back then!

  • That is one cool Backup unit. Much better interface than what the Game Doctor III, I used to use on SNES had.

    Amazing find DD!

  • I only saw this once in a German Magazin as a AD and the Price Tag was 999 Deutsche Mark.

I was like, wtf, your serious?

  • its probably a stupid question, but i was wondering if it was PSSIBLE to download games from other consoles (like playstation games) and play them onto the device. are you able to?

  • @LiuBaio No, you cannot.

  • @LiuBaio you're right, that was a stupid question

  • Yep. It's only for your convenience.. So you don't have to drag out a cart each time you want to play.. Yup..

If you believe that... I have a bridge I'd like to sell you..

  • @Dweller777 That's EXACTLY the reason I purchased this item. Can't you see how essential this device is in this day and age?

  • @DlNKYDANA isnt this ilegal?

  • @DlNKYDANA Well it was nice for back in the day when you were a little kid and dont have money but now ur grown up you should buy the games and support the industry you love! And yes this device is essential to keep all ur games in tact so that you will at least be able to play them 10-20 years from now.

  • @Dweller777 It is more kind of a piracy product, for example someone borrows you a game you make a backup and dont buy. And i seen somewhere a guy downloading roms and putting them on the zip disk.

  • this looks awesome

it's too bad it would probably cost more to buy one of these, plus a zip disk plus an adapter to put it in my computer now days then it would to buy the actual games xD

  • Looks like your Z64 is version 1 with only 128Mbits/16MB of ram. The "A" at the end represents the hardware version. I think that means you can't play roms that are over it.

  • Wow amazing device this Z64. I see that you also have MAME for the N64. N64 ROMs work on this device? For games that you do not have would be fine if it worked on Z64. Really great device. Great review.

  • You might want to update the BIOS on that, it's a really old version of it. 2.17 is the final official release, which might be the best if you don't want to start modding it, as the other firmwares add features for things other than zip disks.

  • A well explained video, Dinky. Nice device.

I had a similar one for my SNES back then. Not as cool as that one, but it did the job. I indeed saved a ton of money by renting games and then saving the data on a disk.

  • I saw an electric piano in the video. Do you record/produce music?

  • @Mag1kM1k3 Nope, just play on my own here and there.

  • @DlNKYDANA Where in hell am I most likely to find Z64 new/used. I have been hunting all up and down the internet for one of those and all the links to any sites that sell them are dead.

  • @NOOBNUT08 How much are you willing to pay?

  • @Boomhauer393 $50 to $500

  • @NOOBNUT08 I have the Mr. Backup V2.0B which is the best model you can get. It is not in perfect condition and has had the zip drive replaced but works perfectly. I am still debating selling it as it is so useful and I would never be able to replace it. But if I did get a good enough offer I might consider it.

  • very nice device..

  • thats mega bit not mega byte yeh?

  • @strictlysega Yup, Megabit.

  • great video dinky

  • Can you than put a game from the zip drive back on to a blank counterfit cartridge?

  • @GreenJanuary Nope. You couldn't sell them to your friends. lol

  • Cool you have a piano XD Do you use often ?

  • @lCytexXl Certainly not as much as I should.

  • I always enjoy watchig videos where the person knows what he/she is talking about! This have been really educational!Thx alot and keep it up!

  • @frejden Thanks frejden. Appreciate you watching.

  • Can you play Conker through it but just not be able to back it up because it's too big?

  • @DrStrongBad Yes, you can play Conker through this. It just won't back it up.

  • oh shit hope this thing is just like the sega cd/32 all u need is the disk drive then you could compete with the genesis

  • When I was working @ Funcoland back in the stoneage, I always heard of a device called a Dr. V for N64. Is this it?

  • @egg64 No, the Dr. V64 is a similar device. The V64 sits under your Nintendo 64 and uses a CD drive.

  • @DlNKYDANA Nice....but ZipDisks in that day were quite expensive. Be cool if one could make a V64 capable of using a DVD drive.

Much respect for your knowledge, subb'd.

  • @egg64 A guy up at the flea market always has the V64 sitting out but he wants a pretty penny for it. : (

Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for subscribing!

  • Looks like a 32x on steroids

  • @switchfoot90 Would have been so cool back then.

  • OMG, that just looks like a monster ;-D

  • @Atarix777 Winner - best comment!

  • Hehehe, it's a DIGIMON ;-D

  • cool device, thx for the review!

  • That's pretty cool, thanks for sharing this with us.

  • just when i thought i had seen it all.

  • Damn, this is a cool piece of technology man. It's like an evolution of pirating haha.

  • @MrDeamos Haha, yeah. Now you just download roms and play anything you want on your pc.

  • @DlNKYDANA Yeah, wonder where it'll go next, haha. Got a new video up as well if you wanna check it out!

  • That's an awesome device Dinky! Great review and thanks for sharing! It kind of reminds me of that Retrode device I recently got. Excellent find bro!

  • @NEStalgiaholic Yeah, there are a bunch of different devices with more or less the same effect. Just nice being able to play the games with the "illusion" of being the originals on the console.

  • Awesome review. Didn't know this even existed.

  • Now thats a great add on! i love it Dinky i can't believe i never knew about this ? thanks for a fantasic review :)

  • @Chipsturs No problem Chipsturs. I knew about the devices but never imagined to see one myself. You might want to look up Dr. V64 and CD64, too. They're similar devices but use CD drives and are able to connect to the PC which is a positive and negative I guess.

  • Its a R4 64

  • This is a really cool video Dana, really cool to have this. DON'T SELL IT! = )

  • Good review man but a couple things:

The reason the Mario 64 game needs to be in there is it does not have protection like later n64 games did so the system can run any game with the unprotected mario 64 cart in.

When it comes to cartridge games its Megabits not Megabytes. 8 Megabits = 1 Megabyte so a 256 Megabit game is really 32 Megabytes.

Just wondering, any clue if the z64 can handle the 100mb and 250mb zip discs or only the 100mb?

  • @gamemaster14neo No, the Z64 only have a Zip-100 drive installed. You can replace the zip drive if you want though.

I guess force of habit saying Megabyte. And I think it is a mix of the early games not having protection and you need one with a 4KB eeprom savechip and a 6102/7101 security chip.

  • This thing is awesome.

  • AWESOME device!!! Gotta hunt one when I get a n64!!!

  • @PhatPhunk You don't have a Nintendo 64?!?!?

  • this is badass man thanx ffor showin it off

  • @Xlovenragex Yup, no problem man.

  • Very cool. Thanks for showing how this works Dinky! :o)

  • Awesome, need one!

  • nice ! no idea that device existed ! good information

  • @jbineux No problem Jbineux.

  • Conker BFD is my favorite N64 game too, of course it wouldnt work

  • @dylanzzzu Conker used a masive amount of romspace including custom memory mapping. the reson it wont play on that little rig is mainly do to lack of internal ram.

it loads the game into ram then feeds it to the n64 emulating a cart.

  • @dylanzzzu I know, it's one of my favorites too.

  • how much did u pay for it

  • Really awesome device. I remember Zip Drives being a massive FAIL though :P haha

  • @Alexdemoted I don't remember them at all so they must have been.

  • MAME on N64, that is awesome!

  • @MaximumRD I know right?

  • that's so bad ass!

  • btw thats actually an awesome device

  • I want one....lol
