  • jeremy clarkson did something that isnt offensive! unbelievable.

  • "what a world we might have made...."

  • Just WOW

  • As a 22 year old, this brought tears to my eyes, to think how Britain was defended by the Heroes and Legends, and how we as the new generation show the lack of respect deserved. Never Forgotten. Makes me so proud to be British.

  • What a great documentary, I cannot help but feel moved, what a magnificent story, these brave man that in desperate times were asked to give the best of them.

Thanks for posting this documentary, I live in a poor region of Mexico, sadly we get a lot of soap operas, sports and talk shows, but quality television like this is as scarce as hens teeth. This is the only way we get to see these incredible episodes of the human race. Gracias!

  • Shame we were fighting the wrong people.

  • @bermudarailway what are you talking about. there's no way the Nazis were right

  • @TheSimmulator1 I was refering to Germans not Nazis.

  • Another good documentary about the raid is here watch?v=kLYarO9K1fc There are more interviews with some of the same soldiers involved. Have a look. There are more episodes in this series about other raids.

  • in the tv version clarkson mentions calling footballers heros when these men did so much more just befor he says good night.....

  • I Loved that the Germans had the decency to be impressed

  • and now we call these guys Royal Marine Commando's

  • Comment removed

  • Never fuck with the British commandos. They will kill you.

  • What about the Bismarck? This sister ship to Tirpitz did acually do some damage to the Royal Navy - The sinking of HMS Hood.

  • @anttown4ever Didn't it get fucked up by biplanes?

  • @HeFilmsTheClouds Indeed it did but the air planes did not sink it, just fucked up the steering gear ;) The Royal Navy sent way to many ships to battle the Bismarck and finaly the Bismarck sank. It is however debatted if the Royal Navy did sink the Bismarck or if the german captin himself ordered the sinking of the ship.

Mabye in the future the real cause will be revield. (Sorry ´bout my english)

  • Any other Brits get a lump in t9he throat watching this?

  • @L999WAG I got a lump in the throat and I'm not even British.

  • American here - truly magnificent stuff. These men are part of the reason we are still proud to fight alongside the British any day of the week.

  • The modesty of the British is simply remarkable......had this been a yank operation they'd have been boasting all over the place

  • @ee07b067 If you would like to assume such ignorant and arrogant thoughts, then by all means do so.

  • @maddog4u31757 stereotypes come from somewhere though don't they

  • @TheKneekap They do, but we could also expect the British to assume that there ideas are the best and that everyone else is below par on their standards. I personally see no point in fighting about different countries. They all have arrogant idiots who get to use a computer and display their stupidity. I'm not even Canadian but I have a video dedicated to the troops who have been killed that were in the Canadian military.

  • @maddog4u31757 okay dude

  • @TheKneekap Just an observation. A good stereotype is that all British people are insanely polite and respectful. :) :)

  • @maddog4u31757 haha, probably not nowadays... countrie's gone down the shitter i tell ya. saddening really, the country that brought us the modern world is now the sphincter of politics and spending.

a good American stereotype is you all hate mexicans :) haha just kidding

  • I am humbled and forever in their debt.

  • Unheard of bravery. my deepest respects to The survivors, the lost ones, the Planners, anyone who my mindboggled self has forgotten in this and ofcourse, Great Britain!

  • we still have brave young men who fight & die for us ,god bless The Royal marines,God speed 45 commando.

  • every man,who took part in this raid are true hero's all should be given the vc even now almost 70 years later

  • I had no idea thισ happened!!!

  • Does anyone know the name of the piece of music that is played in the background throughout all six parts??

  • Has there been a movie made about this raid? It would be a good one.

  • ...at that moment...there was a bang

  • Not to take anything away from these people, but similar raiding parties were done all along the eastern front and Yugoslavia which have never been filmed/recorded. The sad thing was germans executed all slavs and communists/partisans caught fighting the german army.

  • @leonenaj So!!?? are you Not aware that any British soldier captured as a raider was shot on orders from Hitler !

Many died in Torture chambers,,,,, those that did this, were hunted down after ww2 many did not survive these Hunts, read the S A S hunt for War criminals

  • It's so poignant to know that after all that, these men were merely human.

  • I had heard about this raid in a documentary years ago. They hid the explosives inside the massive legs of the dining tables in the ship's galley -- I think that's what Navy guys call the eating place. I wonder how many of the raiding party are still alive today...

  • REAL MEN

    and i teared up.

  • Amazing story. Thank you too all Armed Forces personel, past and present

  • Heroes. And very modest ones too.

  • Brilliant doc :)

  • Hope. The greatest weapon man has ever had against evil.

  • The greatest generation...without a shadow of doubt.

  • Woah! what heroes, the men who died for me. All they get is a rock in a car park, the shame of it all

  • one of the best documentaries I've ever watched. Thanks for uploading.

  • Thanks for uploading this, I found it to be a very interesting documentry.

  • They've slightly rectified the memorial issue, creating an interesting and noticeable (but still very small) monument piece on the Prince of Wales pier in Falmouth. But they really need something (well publicized) in London to do full justice to such an amazing feat.

  • A small out of the way memorial, that's the way they would have wanted it.

  • "There was a bang"

  • lol 7 germans disliked this :)

  • Beware of the Brits.

  • True Valour! This what makes Britain....Great Britain! Thank you

  • @leepodstar correction, this is what MADE Britain great. The 'greatness' has long since diminished unfortunately. The country is in a sorry state nowadays.

  • THE BITISH PIOLETS OUT NUMBERED THE POLES BUT BRAVERY IS STILL BRAVERY

  • may there sacrifice never be forgotten

  • 7:05 "I'm sure the youths of today would of done the same", I so wish that were true but this Nation has changed from brave men to chav scum thinking their bigger then life.

  • @borofalcon101 Either that or men who don't know how to use the english language. it's "they're" as in "they are," not their. And it's "than," not "then."

  • I think there was another version of this show on-line, but this was a quality record of WWII history. Thank you for the upload JSS.

  • What a fantastic documenary. This is spirit the men showed is what makes the British so special!

  • Courage and Bravery beyond human's capacity....Thats the Royal Marine Commandos

  • Per Mare Per Terram.

  • shame for micky burn died back in september 2010 r.i.p thank you service to this country it should never be forgottin

  • If they made this into a Hollywood movie, I would watch it

  • @Cooly1111 they will never do that coz the only american was the ship .

  • This is why we need the BBC to be paid for by licence fees..... Can you imagine ITV or Channel 5 making this ? it just wouldnt get a look in amongst all the vile What Katie did next bollox......

and if you have any doubts go look at the listings and find ANYTHING on either of those that is in any way intellectual....

  • Such brave chaps, an inspiring and sad story i am glad that we have such brave men that are willing to do things like this. RIP to all those killed at St. Nazaire, during the entire and and in conflicts past and present.

  • This nearly made me cry. Jezza should work for History. His narrating makes it all better, makes sound like it is, astounding.

  • Makes you realise that any old man you see in the street in your own town or village could have acted as bravely as this at some point. Maybe the younger generations should bear that in mind.

  • @aloz71 Seeing the bravery and suffering endured by these men makes my realize how pissed I am with our generation today, moaning and complaining about every little thing, taking everything for granted. If it takes the feeling of being on the brink of death for people to appreciate what they have, then won't that be a good place to be? Massive respect for these guys.

  • Lt. Cdr. Sam Beattie VC would still be alive if it wernt for those ira cunts! R.I.P

  • @RoyalMarines19 Its was lord Mountbatton that was killed by the IRA

  • @RoyalMarines19 Its was lord Mountbatton that was killed by the IRA

  • @RoyalMarines19 With a name like RoyalMarines19 you would think you would know what you are talking about. It was Mountbatton that was killed when his boat was blown up by the IRA.

  • I don't think anyone has as much humour in the face of certain death as the British.

Proud that this is part of our countries military heritage.

  • So 600+ men volunteering to go on a mission knowing full well that their chances of coming back alive were slim to none... and when the dust settles all they get is a pathetic rock in a car park... fucking disgraceful.

Everyone of those old boys make me so proud, but the way this country treats our veterans, past and present, including the Gurkhas makes me so ashamed to be British. :(

  • If i could live to be half the man these men were then I would happy. They really do show the human spirit and determination at its finest. God bless these men.

  • really does make me proud to be british

  • "Don't hang about here lad, it's decidedly unhealthy!" lol right you are

  • ABSOLUTE LEGENDS! God bless everyone of you!

  • "WE'RE GOING TO KILL YOU ALL!"

"please dont shout, just get on with it"

    absolutely classic

though what i find most disgusting is that pitiful excuse for a memorial. a much better one should be made and placed somewhere better as a testament to what these men did.

  • This has all made me feel a little teary surprizingly.

  • ud better get off this deck coz it getting pretty unhealthy!! lmao!! GOD BLESS THE ROYAL NAVY AND COMMMANDOS

  • brillaint.

  • error at 3:48 : Tirpitz was sited in Norway since January'42 (to opperate against convoys to Russia). Since operation Cerberus (11.-13.February'42) operation Chariot was unnecessary and a waste of lives and material. But that's something nobody likes to hear.

  • @eus478 it still does'nt detract from what the brave and honerable service men did, they fought like lions and that is what the program was about bravery, courage and GUT'S!!!

  • @saxo191 agree

  • these guys are truly badass

  • Very humbling program

  • A Great Story Indeed. Very Brave Brit warriors who carry out the raid. But for a lot of people world war 2 will never end. We don't want war, we want world peace and it can only be achieve by learning to live in harmony.

  • I never thought that smart alecky Jeremy Clarkson could be so moving in his own way. Well done.

  • @htolas You should watch his documentary on Victoria Cross winners...

  • @Suprahampton I did. I'd repeat what I said here. Thanks.

  • the father of my grandmother was the barberer of german troops stationed in holland, what a douche !

  • Great documentary. A great piece of history. Very inspiring.

  • This documentary pays good tribute to the amazing spirit these boys carried with them through the thick of it all.

I find this to be incredibly inspirational and multiple times during watching I found myself close to tears.

    Heroes, period.

    Greetings from the Netherlands.

  • I have seen that memorial and at first I didn't know what it meant and now watching this I realise what it was... The men who died deserve a statue each.... They don't get nearly enough recognision.

  • they werent Royal Marine commandos ,they were Army Commandos . The original special forces My dad was in No5 (Army )Commando and just missed this raid

  • I'd vomit and wet myself and pass out. That's before leaving, mind you.

  • There is one thing that allways pissed me off at this presentation, its that the boat empire of the world didnt have enofgh steel. To seal those workers/ie solders of valor (creating your home of freedome and world liberation etc etc) for the home trip.

How could they just balance that diesel tank on deck, with just a sheet of bronze?

"Well look here Fritz if you wanna boile a tommy; HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!"

Even though there freigher tons where desperate, just dosent make any sense.

  • I can not even begin to imagen what a full scale war against a european provacuteur would feel like. Let alone comitting my life and my contry men for freedom.

For the price of freedom has been high.

  • German officer: "HAHA you can't bring down our gate with such flimsy little boat"

    *Giant explosion.

    "I think you're right." - British commando.

  • im lost for words so all i will say is my grandad served as a siggy in the RAF during ww2 and god save the queen

  • "You were the first that gave us hope" What a wonderful feeling that must have been

  • Isn't it odd that soldiers who were trying to kill each other can almost be the best of friends within a few minutes

  • @GGSDavejones Well not really since the enemy and your comrades are the only people who can understand what you went through, they also get to see the bravery of their enemy and are therefore less influenced by the propaganda fed to the public to keep up spirits.

  • @GGSDavejones It's not an argument between them. It's much larger so there is just mutual respect as warriors.

  • Rule Britania

  • Today we are scared of the bond markets. How times have changed

  • glad we had those guys on our side.

    greetings for Norway

  • You have to love the English way. Unorthodox and briliant. I'm proud to be of English background and honoured that my Grandad was in the royal navy in the war, My grampy was in the Canadian army, served in italy, holland, i think france, and korea

  • To quote Hanibal of A-Team fame, "I love it when a plan comes together."

  • Australian here. I had never even heard of this battle before today. It's bloody criminal they don't teach us this stuff in school. Thanks for uploading this.

All I can say is that god has a sense of dramatic timing. "Ya know, ramming the gates was pretty useless with that flimsy shi-" *BOOOOOOOOM*

  • @Gaunt128 Yeah, here here.

  • @Gaunt128 i dont think god had anything to do with the raid with or without dramatic timing.......i believe it was down to great training, unbelievable courage and something most of us lack.......the most massive interplanetary set of balls imaginable!.............of course there will always be losers like you who would take away mankinds ability for the ultimate sacrifice during warfare and claim my imaginary god made it happen..........sleep tight loser

  • @jamesjnr67 Huh. So, someone using the word "god" immediately makes them a bible-basher with no respect for these guys? It was a comment on how unlikely - almost cinematic, even - the timing of the explosion was. Was there anything in my comment that was belittling to those soldier's training or courage? Chill out, mate =/

  • @Gaunt128 i never said you were a bible basher i just said you were a twat.........it wasnt me who said the timing was down to god,it was you..........feel free to deny you said god has a sense of dramatic timing............you obviously believe god had a hand in when the bomb went off otherwise why would you say "All I can say is that god has a sense of dramatic timing".............chill out knobnuts!

  • British = Indestructible

    Greetings and Admiration from Canada!

  • brave peaple,the real stuff.

as an israeli i say god bless the uk

  • 70,000th veiw!

  • amazing, but this will happen again and amazing people will be born again

  • I have been to that monument... It is truly rumbling. Let us never forget these brave men.

  • Hearing any of these men say that they believe our generation would do the same as they do is incredibly humbling.

  • british and proud the war was a terrible thing but when u hear about stuff like this you cant help but respect all of the men who gave there lives for the missions success

  • Great tribute, makes me proud. These brave men deserve so much Recognition to what they achieved!!! I read about this mission in High School and saw the Commando documentary on Channel 4 in 2002. True heores no doubt. R.I.P all those Commandos and Royal Navy that risked their lives for so many!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely brilliant and moving - thanks for the posting

  • We cant thank enough this men for giving their lifes for us to be free today.

  • If hollywood wants to make a ww2 movie, they should base their next movie on this raid

  • As an American, I salute these British commandos for their courage and heroism

    at times of such difficulties

I just wish schools in America would teach about this raid in history class

  • Brilliant.

  • I loved it when the old chap said we would do the same now and I hope he is right. The British spirit they showed is within us all, if we ever have to face something like WW2 again I'm sure we will find it.

  • well done clarkson. highlighting the bravest of men, and one of the most inspirational stories of the war.

  • God Bless these men//They really did fight like lions//

  • i hope we could man up and do this again, cant wait to join

  • "I'm sure the youth of today would do the same as we did, i'm sure they will"

Unfortunately sir, i don't we could even come close.

  • @21quandary to right.... I would be proud if i had just a ounce of courage like these men had. I have been to that memorial... And it was humbling

  • Thanks for uploading this as im in the Commando Troop is a SEA country... dis is a good way of combat survival n i would show it to my army frens n comrades TY so much

  • Thank you very much for uploading this..

  • When I watched the movie 300 all I could think of was this tale of heroism. If you've seen the movie you'll know what I'm talking about, "A thousand nations of the Persian empire descend upon you. Our arrows will blot out the sun!" Stelios: "Then we will fight in the shade", Dilios: "Immortals... we put their name to the test.". These quotes from the film relate to this story in every shape and form, the commandos were up against a force that seemed 'immortal', but they fought on regardless.

  • epic story, they all had that animal like frame of mind like nothing other than death would stop them. They sure did give em' hell.

  • epic story, they all had that animal like frame of mind like nothing other than death would stop them. They sure did give em' hell.

  • this is why the brits are like lions we fight to the death and still keep our dignity good job old chap

  • Great show old boy! :)

  • @cyclekarl

    Fuck off.

  • There is going to be a film on this called "The Raid". What a film that will be!

  • @TheSephOne

Oh dear, who is going to make that film? I am sick and tired of the Americans re-writing our history. What they did with the U571 thing will never be forgiven.

  • Balls = The British during the 39-45 war. We need a definitive video history of the SOE, too. Edward Yeo-Thomas. BIG balls. Jack Agazarian.

  • Outstanding courage Thanks Gents.

  • Men like that aren't sent to war. They are merely unleashed.

  • loved it! truly inspiring! almost made me cry....

    thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks for the videos. These men did without fear what most of us nowadays could not even imagine doing. Extraordinary

  • it really got to me when he said he thought todays generation would do the same if they had to. real hero

  • @Blink182DudeRanch Yes, a qoute that makes you think, innit?

Can't help thinking, that maybe they wouldn't..

  • @MayoDK i think theres still some people that would. not the kind of people that goround beating people up in clubs on a friday night though

  • Inspiring what simple men, faced by allmost certain death or a POW camp, can achieve by courage and determination. These men are or have beern real heros. But that memorial stone is a joke. Greetings from Germany. That scene with "Hände hoch" was kind of funny :-)

  • "you were the first who gave us hope"

    enough said

  • Wow..simply amazing

  • What is the name of the music at the end? It reminds me of one of the recent Batman soundtracks...

  • The part with the destroyer finally blowing up would look great in a movie. Should be followed by a lot of "SHEISSE!!"

  • if there were ever as time to say

     'Never Forget'

  • My heart is swollen with the efforts that the brave men and women exacted to save us from nazi tyranny... I will never forget. . .

  • there are no words to describe the greatness in these men and their courage. truly there aren't. these are the stories and lessons that should be passed down in the schools. Not politically correct feel good crap. I pray so much that these men are never forgotten and more so, their example. Brave Brave British country loving honorable Heros!

  • They had to have specially designed pants to keep their balls in, they were that brave.

  • @oldskoolmacboy lololol you made me crap my pants, YES! they were very brave.

  • Wow, very amazing documentary. Those Brave soles. Rode their ship right into hell, and some lived to tell the story. Now that is the greatest Raid of all time. thanks for posting this great documentary video.

  • Comment removed

  • this is one of the most honest documentaries ever.

  • Brits are brave warriors indeed.

    Greetings from Poland ;)

  • Thanks brother, my grandad served with a lot of Polish troops during the war, he always had good things to say about them!

  • @blokey01 absolutely agree. the poles where one of our most amazing allies. Tough as nails.

  • @blokey01 There were some incredible Polish pilots in the RAF too. Outstanding brothers in arms.

  • @mothership665 thank you, the poles never get as much credit as deserved.

Your race added to the end of the war more than is ackowledged, not only your sacrifices, but your inrodes on engima.
