I have an Uher 4000 Report L (half track mono recorder) which is the machine that I use when I need to do any on-location record, especially for broadcast reports or interviews.
I hate those miniature MP3 toy-like or egg-shaped gadgets in fashion today. To use a reel to reel portable recorder is my choice for whichever kind of outside recording task, from "hunting" a thunderclap, a frog, traffic noise or even the whispering of running water coming from a brook, apart, of course, of radio uses.
Nice collection and an informative narration. I had a really heavy ex-military wire recorder once. I got it as a kid from a Scout sale and I remember lugging it a mile to Osterley train station along with armfuls of other tat I'd bought.
I've had a Philips, couple of Tandbergs and a Grundig or two. Currently I have a Lowe Optica, a Uher 4000 Report Monitor and a Uher Cassette portable. I can't remember the model number.
Thank you for the offer, I have got the layout for 4 different B101 batteries, and the electronics are very simple. using 7 9V batteries inside a box, I planned to make a rechargeable version but never got round to doing it, these batteries are available new for about £25
Very neat recorders! And I'm hoping to get that Dokorder model off eBay. Do the recorders work? If they do, may you please do a video of you presenting recording quality and playback of voice? Thanks. Also, I wonder, where on earth do you get SO MANY reel-to-reels! I don't know of any other man in existance with as many machines you got! I am so amazed!
Cheers! I collect recorders from around the world, I buy a lot from Germany, the Phono Trix 88 came from America, my collection is 18 years in the making.
That's an awesome collection of portable reel to reels. If you haven't already, could you do a more detailed demonstration of the minifone wire recorder I saw in this video? I'd love to see it.
Well... the recorder needs 30V, 12V and 1.5V to run but I think there is a DC input on the front, I will have to repair it before I can make a video of it.
Thanks for sharing your collection. VERY interesting. I got a "Transicorder" from E-Bay that will never work again. I don't know how the owners did it, but they stored the machine someplace where the rubber parts actually 'petrified', hard as a rock. The main belt shattered into pieces, and the motor was seized up. Not a drop of oil left in the machine. The capstan flywheel has a rubber tire, also hard as a rock, and all the electrolytics dried out. It will never work again, sigh.
A bulk eraser would let you re-use tape on the EMI without an erase system. Broadcast cartridge recorders also do not have an erase head and the carts must be bulk erased before re-use. Stunning collection!
awesome set of tape recorders!

The Watergate tapes were recorded on that Sony, but they were erased on a Uher.

Did not know that EMI made or used these devices. Very cool tape recorders.

Never mind--you need a couple of B101's for the HT. I can build those.

What batteries do the valve machines use? There's a good chance I can make working replicas.

That wire recorder must sound terrible.

It would have been for dictation rather than music.
