I have a female dove that laid an egg. She has had no partner in over 1.5 years. Are eggs fertilized after they are laid? because this egg was laid in a hard cage and cracked, broken. I thought she couldn't lay an egg without a partner, no I wasn't prepared. :(
The Mouring dove that was nested on my window sill hated me. Every time I came to wash my dishes or just look at her (The windows in front of the sink.) She'd smack the window with her wings and peck it. Earlier today one of the babies flew away to a garage roof next door while I was watching. The other stayed behind. But when I went to make some Spagetti the mother was angrier than ever and beat the crap out of my window. She was so frantic she knocked the other baby off the sill backwards.
@millgiass From where I was standing it just looked like it fell backwards but when I went down below just a few minutes later with a flashlight to see if it was okay I saw neither a dead or an injured bird. Could it have successfully learned to fly in that instant? Or is it more likely it died and a cat or another night time mammal got it? I was worried about it when it fell I spent about ten minutes looking around the ground.
We have a mourning dove in our garage and she has two eggs, but its only been fourteen days. I can't wait to see the babies! We also have a robin in my old playset in the backyard with a nest! Do you know how lopng it takes for the babies to leave the nest? :)
We have a pair of these on a tree in front of our house and I think it's been over 2 weeks since they laid eggs. Trouble is, the city came and trimmed the tree (great year they picked, I was asking them for three years to do it). I wasn't here when they did but I'm sure they scared the mom or dad away. Anyone know if the chick inside would survive a few hours without warmth? It wasn't freezing or anything but it was in the 50s.
We had a mourning dove take up residence in our Topsy Turvy tomato planter yesterday. After we shooed it away we looked inside and found an egg. How long does it take for the egg to hatch? We've given up on getting tomatoes this year (we can't exactly water it), but we are curious if it will hatch before our vacation in three weeks... any ideas?
@SuperCrazyBlond Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that, is there a zoo or a university with an ornithology department nearby you? They may be able to provide you with assistance. Is the dove visited by other doves? If so, the dove may have a family nearby and they're also trying to figure out what to do. Observe and see what happens! Please let me know how things turn out. ^^
The baby dove flew away once it was 16 days old. In the video, you see the baby dove on the bottom of the nest when the female dove gets off the nest around 1:08
It took about 14-16 days for the eggs to hatch. In the video, this pair of doves took 16 days, but in another pair that came afterwards it took about 14 days.
Eek! How exciting! We have a pigeon couple who raise chicks on our balcony every year...hatching day is always great. Lucky you get such a close view!
