i have fsx..while ils landing is easy with autopilot, in real life how do pilots land if runway has no ils...how do they align the plane with centreline of runway in crosswinds and land..it amazes me..please enlighten...
@devsalma Visual Approach, follow the PAPI (2 red and 2 yellow) and keep the runway "between-your-legs" then eventually when you see the Centreline, keep that inbetween your legs and you should be fine!
It hacks me off when the average joe says that planes 'can land themselves'. Not all aircraft are equipped with autoland systems, and even when they are, airport equipment and crew qualification is required. Yes, the autopilot/autothrottle can fly the aircraft more accurately than me, but there are limitations on the autoland system where the pilot will manually fly the approach.
i think they also can take off by themselves, just put in your altitude and then put on the autopilot, it will try to go up to the altitude you selected.
This seems like a good system to have. Progrssive taxi stepped up to a whole new level.

For the B737:
Demonstrated crosswind limitation: 33kt
Autoland crosswind limitation: 15kt!!

can't takeoff by themselves yet... thank god... but the airplane can land by itself.

actually i think this is bullshit! it's slightly modified gpws (and every airliner should be equipped with gpws today)... so what?

We are just about there all we need is take off and taxi. They can just about land themselves! :P

that's not cool. The reason one becomes a pilot is to fly the airplane, not press a button.

yes just sit back, put your feet up on the dash, and light your cigar- oops, you can't smoke on the airliners these days.
