Lots of phoney reasons why he resigned. It was all very odd, no PM had ever resigned before. The real reason is he was communist traitor and MI6 forced him out - they must have had something on him, maybe he was into bestiality or necrophilia or something like that.

@TheZanipolo Most of us wished Harold Wilson had been a communist ! He was anything but. The two stories that did the rounds was that MI5 had tried to mount a coup against him, but that goes back to the 1960s. More plausibly, he may have been suffering from the first signs of dementia. But also - these were tough times and frankly, he may just have had enough.

@TheZanipolo He didn't resign in 1970, Heath won as a result of the leak of economic statistics which promoted more problems within the economy than the public knew about under Wilson.

@TheZanipolo That is preposterous rubbish. The reason he left office was he was in the early stages of alzheimers and felt he was losing his grip - he didn't expect to win the 1974 election and his government drifted for some time. It's well known he wasn't that happy as prime minister again in the 70s.

@llanberis100 My point is that he would have rather stayed popular in the polls than actually serve a proper term and make the productive, that is, private sector, thriving and leading the way in technology and exports, which instead was left to Japan and West Germany.
