  • One of best songs EVER!!!

  • Pure joy! Pure talent! Pure emotion! Thanks for posting this.Does anyone know if this version available on disc or record?

  • this is blues of the non-plastic variety

  • Love it, and danny is fantastic!

  • Huiuiuiuiui! Möchte doch zu gern mal wissen, was zwei so tolle Stimmen in der Atmosphäre alles für Schabernack miteinander machen, während die dazugehörenden Körper denken, sie würden grad "bloß" Musik machen :D

  • Who on earth could not like this?

  • Auf deutsch! Sie können beim letzten Ton selber nicht glauben, was sie da gehört haben. DAS ist die Magie!! <3 it! Wenn Musiker einander aufmerksam zuhören während sie gemeinsam spielen :) DAS ist gute Musik! Egal, welches sogenannte "Genre". Wenn du ES auch nicht verstehst?! Das ist eine LIEBESERKLÄRUNG!! :))

  • This song never fails to get me, and this version is one of the best i've heard!!

  • my hero!

  • you only have to see the faces of JM and kathy mattea at the end of this to know how fucking good it was.......that is the reaction we all want when collaborating with other musicians......we all know whn it "comes good" ...but to reach this level of near nirvana is a pipe dream t most of us I guess

  • @electricragtime I agree, but let's keep living the dream!!

  • look Mum, no MIDI.....pure class

  • brill

  • OmG beautiful

  • REAL musicians playing REAL music! Miss you John.

  • i like it too john ...rest in peace

  • just put this in my favourites, john and danny and jerry and kathy, the perfect foursome.

  • A great and wonderful talent. Thanks for the post

  • Their enthusiasm is captivating. Thank YOU!!!

  • who are the 13 people who dislike this ?? 13 ?? unlucky for you guys ...

  • His voice was heavenly and it improved with age. Amazing musician and amazing song.

  • god i saw him in sheffield in 1977 -- aaah he was a great talent -

  • couthyband ... yours is clearly a really heartfelt comment. John, like the rest of us, had his share of failings, but lack of courage wasn't one of them .....

  • john martyn regularly came to queens university belfast to do a concert all through the 70's and 80's while others rejected us as pariahs because of the terrible rash of terrorism that overtook us then and i will always remember the atmosphere of those gigs and he truly shone in the darkness RIP john may you lay your head down now with all those who will so willingly hold your hand

  • goosebumps, just beautiful, theres a massive John Martyn shaped hole left in the music world. Genius

  • 3:26 and omwards - when they REALLY get into it - epecailly Danny.

  • So beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. I hadn't heard this version before, and I'm glad I did. Thanks for uploading!

  • wer das sieht und hört und nicht an Magie glaubt, ist selber schuld.

  • class version x

  • 4:13 : )

  • This is a cool song. I first heard it when I heard Kathy do it as a tribute to John after his passing. I love that version. This version is good , too. Thanks for posting it!

  • i LOVE this video....

  • Lost for words. Well I've got one. Sublime

  • Great! this must be nearly 20 years old now and this friday we have Transatlantic Sessions 5 on BBC2.

  • I knew Clapton's version... I didn't know it was a cover. Heard the original, then this one and I've listened to it 5 times in a row now... just breathtaking

  • How often do we have to say:

    John Martyn:

    The Guvnor.

    Endof..

  • =)

  • So beautiful ! Guess I'm floating !

  • Simply the Worlds best in my opinion

  • JOY JOY!

  • 2:54 eargasm

  • This is one of the best performances of this song (in his latter years) very sadly, a few years later he sucumbed to the results of an addictive life style and we are all robbed by that sad event.

  • I cant believe i have been alive for nearly 23 years and not heard this before. Disappointed in myself! and society in general!

  • Fuck off 13 dislikes!

  • @leon327 Poor old dislikers! Feel a bit sorry for them. This song takes me to heaven! - as close as an old sinner can get (:–)

  • Mattea keeps him in check; whilst remaining both charming and professional.

  • SYNERGY_cooking with gas.

  • best off.good times music

  • She's in awe of Him, John was the best.

  • Just sitting in Kuwait and watching (mostly listening) to this , again,.. plugged into the telly with the speakers on,. It is, I think quite wonderful. MrThielBeats I am with you on that . Mashallah

  • lovely, lovely, amazing musicians, amazing voices

  • Never gets old. RiP John.

  • RIP johnny...

  • Its one of the most beautful songs I ever heard, thank you for posting.

  • This is pure music, and yet still a lesson and the very meaning of growth.

It's like Kathy Mattea grows up in the space of the runtime on the video.

    Gorgeous.

  • Love this song.. the more I hear it the more I like

  • This song never seems to lose its endearing charm, sensitive but not schmaltzy .The definitive version,a lovely weighting of voice and instruments.Kathy Mattea is just great providing a sweet balance to John Martyn's earthy voice

  • amazing, what a voice! is this in wales??

  • @IHATETHENEWS This is in Scotland.

  • thanks for everything John.

  • His emotion is contagious. Incredible feeling in his voice. I don't have to know what he's saying.

  • " hehehe, I like that one" what a legend :)

  • what a legacy this man left behind for us

  • Great!!! They all looked so happy singing and playing too. And the country influences from the crystal clear voice of Kathy, the brilliant dobro of Jerry. Danny's bass & John's voice and rhythm..Perfection!!

  • More I listen to this one, more I love it.

  • This song is too good !!!!!

  • @oldman103 Just found this version, my god this is what music is about.

  • @Fullofpies Perfect,isn't it?The ending is great

  • This one never gets old and many times brings a tear to the eye. What a transcendent talent.

  • one of the prettiest songs of this world with one of the most talented singer

  • Kathy looks so in love with John in this video haha great song

  • Take it to church!!!

  • I keep coming back to this. Musical perfection!

  • I love watching Danny and John together :)

  • 12 people have more problems than JM did.

  • love the man. Saw him in Sydney many years ago and he was seriously under the influence yet the show left a lasting legacy to this day. No other musician played with soul like John, he was one of a kind

  • I've been listening to John a hell of a lot over the past several years. I don't think anybody has more worn their heart on their sleeve. A somewhat broken psyhce, he painted his demons so well. I miss him so much.

  • Absolutely effing sodding bloody beautiful, brings tears of joy and sadness to my eye every time I watch, so bloody unfair hes gone,..... Im off to get pissed and get morose, anyone care to join me?

  • @repsalg yep I'll join you mate...... just feel like it right now.

  • hey!! spot on.... i'm off to lie in my pile of moroseness and wonder why!!! i wish i'd seen a John Martyn and Leonard Cohen co=operation.....would have done me till the day I fly outa this world!!!

  • just brilliant, anyone that plays live, can appreciate the quality here on stage.

  • does he say 'take it to church' at the end?

  • @poonbucket Yes he does.

  • ...of course, now...each breath becomes more Radiant..

    than the One before...

"Love is the lesson to learn in our time"...Beautiful!!!

  • Thanks John...I miss you...

  • ********Sweet Sounds*********

  • ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸Amazing¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪

  • This music goes right to the core of me, the rest of the world floats away when I put the head phones on.

  • Stunning professionals!

  • opps... Mattea...sorry Kathy...

    'cause you've always been

such a graceful representative of song to me...

and your compassion has always shown through.

Thank you......& John Martyn, of course...very beautiful.

  • While looking at some of Kathy Matteo's compassionate work in WV (re: heart

breaking toxic mountain top removal mining...a piece I'll post later)...I found this Beautiful version. So, to my love, who is so far away...please know...my hand lays beside yours as you sleep & dream.........

and each breath becomes more Radiant than the one before...'Dancin'

  • SOooo happy I found this version!!!! Thanks for sharing !!!!

  • Once in a great while the stars align, musically speaking, and there is magic.

  • Just utterly gorgeous.

  • Such a great version - we miss you so much John.

  • liquid dobro solo, john brill as usual

  • The music is gorgeous and the group dynamics..! John is orbiting round some planet out there, Katty is hanging on in there wondering what John is going to throw in next. Then theres' something about Danny's presence.....if he was my Dad and told me to go to my room, I'd just...go to my room.

  • @iamthechosenscone The demon drink. But would John have been as good without it.? As for Danny - I hear he always liked a gargle. Theres no way they would have stayed together for so long else. That and they were two great musicians.

  • still one of my solid favorites.... love the response at the end. thanks for posting. willy

  • Timeless.........

  • Just check their faces during Jerry's solo.... sublime ! This is so good. And Danny finishes on the bow...

    Sheer god-damn artistry.

  • Knocks the wind our of me every time. Brilliant.

  • ...and after that, dylan's 'forever young' went out the window

  • Danny Thomson spotting a bum note at 3:15, jerry rocks, went to see transatlantic sessions in Glasgow and his Dobro solo was out this world,

  • the dogs nuts.! m.j.y

  • Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat - especially Jerry Douglas on Dobro!!!!

  • my goodnight song tonight respect to u wherever u r x

  • Of all the amazing masterpieces to originate from the Transatlantic Sessions, this one is on a level of it's own.

  • John was one of those rare people that makes even skeptics like me want to think that maybe, just maybe, there is a God. His songs are life itself, and the OGWT '73 version of this song was a gem from the start, the jewel of Solid Air and the very best thing (which is saying something) that's ever been posted on YouTube. Rest in peace John and live forever.

  • This song has just placed a diamond in my soul. What a spirit. What a song. What a voice. What a band. Thanks you for this. I didn't know it but I really needed it. - Dave in California

  • @boatvox it is THE song to have when you need it. I've cried to this (many a time) laughed with it, sung with it and even sung it for others. The love it conveys is for the bestest and deepest friends and family and for yourself. Take care hun.x

  • Best version - he was a King the day that was recorded. Ta J x

  • May you never leave us, John.

  • Solid Air! Nomore need be said...

  • Solid Air!

  • pure class may u always

  • The best thing ever!

  • again and again and again, I watch this because it is just musical purity !!!!!!!!!!

  • just f*****g fantastic.......may you never lose your temper when you get in a bar room fight.......good advice for us scots .. ha ha ha

  • @im4out Will retire on this one for the night....thank you Michael for sending on..

  • @im4out : stay out of trouble ;-)

  • Its John's song - from one of his early recordings - his voice has dropped considerably - smoking, drinking? .... such an alltime talent....

  • 4:05, love it, Kathy loves it.

  • Absolutely delicious: creme brulee with whipped cream and a cherry on top.

  • John - I miss you so very much !

  • Great ending : )

  • Great ending : )

    CHEERS !!

  • to all my friends and contacts across this wonderful globe.x

  • to all my friend and contacts across this wonderful globe.x

  • What dumass said that this is a cover? Must be as dum as them stupid dudes who writes that going up the country is a Canned Heat tune!? They are trying to sound as they know a lot about music, but haven't dug in the heaps of records yet... but then, the original of going up the country for example, is recorded on one of those rolls with folie... (by Henry Thomas)

But the original recording of this tune is to my knowledge recorded on vinyl on "solid air"... i think? but i'm no expert!

  • ..eller den här utan att tänka bort så mycket....möjligen lite blickar.

  • Simply the best song ever written, perfectly performed.

  • beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!Love the song!!!!

  • Nice jazzy version from his later days.

  • You've gotta love the big man... huge respect to all who made this vid happen :) Jx

  • This is hot!

  • My favorite! I sent it to all my friends on Facebook... great song, great musicians, I feel so good when I hear this!

  • perfect

  • 2:54 - 2:56. makes me shiver every time

  • I love this ! We need more music like this nowaday. I mean it

  • @LesFillesduFeu7 we will never listen to music like this again john was a 1off

  • Magique, vrai, une des plus belles chansons de John Martyn que le " grand " Eric Clapton a d'ailleurs massacré...mais bon, on lui en veut pas hein !!!!

  • @pekka562

    Trop vrai!

  • Great cover of a song I first became aquainted with off Eric Clapton's Slowhand album....

  • @rockeridolfumc

    Cover? This is John's song.

  • Comment removed

  • @rockeridolfumc

    You're an idiot.

  • Great performance! Nobody can sing this song like John Martyn. Also, through this video, I came to know Kathy Maetta. She is so cool here!

  • This is just superb. so tight and compassionate

  • John Martyn at his best imo and well supported here by Kathy Mattea. Awesome version of one of my all-time favorite songs of John's. Danny Thompson, take a bow! Best bassist ever! Jerry Douglas...'classy slide man!

I'm in heaven listening to this, it just don't get any better.

    RIP John.

  • Awwwwwwww - bless him, the big fella and the little boy - all in one on this. I could watch this for ever. So beautifully done. I love the eye contact between players who are just enjoying how good each other is. And Danny - if you ever get bored and find yourself reading these things. THANK YOU TOO for everything you do. Not just with John, but with all the other old buggers I've seen you with over too many years. Love you fellas. Sleep well John.

  • John Martyn was an original. You could tell he felt the music. God bless him. He is missed.

  • Amazing performance; what a soulful voice!

Any American viewers of these wonderful videos should take the time to write to the BBC about releasing the DVDs in NTSC format for U.S. customers.

  • never lose your woman to the night..

  • You will be missed, John. A great musician to the end.

  • The Best !!

  • Beautiful

  • @Mell1888 - I believe captaingoatbeard is right - Solid Air was written for Nick Drake - the John Martyn website says this was written for Wesley (his son) - but the words don't quite fit that for me - and I'm sure I heard it was for a friend who ran a pub John used to gig at (?) - OK - far too nerdy and the music is magic anyway!

  • @bluemarvin1010 May you never was indeed written for Wesley.

  • Great piece of music. Very relaxing and soothing. Great artist also
