The Best Sci-fi Oldies series made for TV (apart from Star trek) these are 2 of my favourite episodes especially the dragons domain scared the crap out of me as a Kid :)
Brilliant Sci Fi for its time stunning sets dramatic music clever camera work special effects believable characters and many talented actors from stage and screen season one is the best by far Barry Morse was always good in any ITC series he did in the 70s but as Victor Bergman he was fantastic Series 2 was crap!! Freddie Freiberger killed Star Trek and then Space 1999!
The first season was what I like to call a "hard science fiction" serial because it was like Arthur C Clark & Stanley Kubrick's "2001 a space odyssey".
Barry Morse was the epitome of a scientist, and this aspect seemed to be lost altogether in the second season. The beginning music was classic Barry Grey, and the background theme was very much like Pyotr Tchaikovsky! The overall plot line was just a little bit overarching, but I agree, the actors were good and the vehicles and sets fantastic!
@sptol Hi; I didn't know that Freddie Freiberger was involved in Star Trek? Could you please tell me in what capacity? I agree with you about him killing the 2nd series of Space 1999; it was god-awful. Cheers....
I was 13 when Dragon's Domain aired and it left a huge impression on me as well. Okay so the effects don't hold up anymore... the story and the mood are as compelling as ever. I was recently lucky enough to meet Martin Landau and told him as much.
i was like 9 years old when i saw Dragons Domain and belive me it nearly scared me to dead when i was kid, its kinda funny that nowadays its more funny than scary but when you are kid you cant feel it like that way.
I love the special effects (and the sets, uniforms, props so on) I don't like CGI to much (the first Hulk, enough said) and I think the original Battlestar Galactica still holds up as well
To me it was the pinnacle of the series (series 2 being a total disaster for me). It had this feeling of remoteness like the movie Alien. I partly credit Brian Johnson's space shots on the show, who also worked on Alien, for achieving that feel. This particular episode also engraved itself into my mind. I was 9 years old at the time and it still holds up. The show truly had class and some outstanding performances by the original cast. This and UFO creeped me out when I was a kid. Excellent!
Of all the Space:1999 episodes, this particular one is creepy. "Dragon's Domain" traumatized me when I watched it the first time back in 1976 when I was 12. Today, I own almost the entire DVD collection of this fantastic show, but this episode, at age 44, still sends quivers up my spine. Give it credit, though;an impeccable plot and some interesting philosophy about "facing your fears". Plus, lots of credit to the design artist who created that horrific, gruesome creature. Some imagination, boy!
its not just facing your fears, the man was accused of killing his crew by decompression, and then when he tried to tell the world the truth, he was labelled as insane and as an ego mainiac. its about redemption and a mans conscience haunting him, to the point were his life was nothing but pain. he couldnt even talk to people about the incident because he would only reinforce their acusations of him being dillusional and histerical. not to mention if that beast got on the base more would die.
Is there any news of the 2nd series being released by Network DVD? The 1st series release was stunning. The US got a complete series release last year, but I'm not sure if it got the brilliant remastering job that was on the Network release.
I've heard (and seen) promos for something called "Space: 2099", but I'm not sure if it's a new series or just the original series released with a new title.
Before the crew of the Nostromo encountered the face-hugger/chest-burster/acid-mouthed creatures in "Alien," we were given a dose of what horrors await those who enter the "Dragon's Domain."
Viewing these clips reminded me when, as a 10 year old, I would sit in front of our black & white Telefunken tv watching these series aired once a week in Malta! Thanks for the memories and hope to see longer clips.
I agree with all the previous comments. I have recently purchased Season 1 and 2 on DVD. The Dragon's Domain was by far the scariest (yea back in 1976-77 it scared the pants off me), but even with S99's somtimes corny special effects, they had the best group of artists who created so much of this in miniature. Well done!! Live on Space 1999!!!
I saw dragons domain again recently and its one of the best space 1999 episodes ever! It was a brilliant series often over shadowed by american series. This and UFO were and are fantastic and I have fond and scary memories of both of them.
I'd forgotten how great this episode was. As an 11 yr old, it gave me the willies but good. FYI; i've heard that if your gonna buy the whole series and have a regionless player, the version to get is the BBC remastered collection...anybody else heard this?
I absolutely agree that "Dragon's Domain" is without a doubt the scariest episode ever, and could most certainly be made even SCARIER with modern FX. But, it is also the core of what ..1999 was about: traveling across the universe into the unknown!
Back then, as a kid, I was...today uhm no. Although I believe if they re-did the special effects with todays abilities (sorta as they are with Classic Star Trek) that beast would still be scary!!! It was the best of Space 1999.
The Dragons Domain scared the f**k out of me when I saw it, probably the original airing 1976 (?) if I remember rightly it was shown on ITV on Saturdays early evening, after World of Sport. The way the victims were devoured haunted me for ages, glad to see I wasn't the only one!
Ah, love it so much, man. Will purchase all of it on DVD now. If they re-do all this with new technique, what do you think what the best sci-fi would be ?
For the love of...PLEASE somebody upload the whole Dragon's Domain episode. I was a bit kid when this was first aired and have vague memories of it - watching the clips on this site, maybe the trauma's repressed the complete memories! Seriously, somebody please upload this episode - I debated forking out for the frankly ridiculous amount Amazon's asking for the first series but a baby daughter a week old has to take priority. COME ON some generous soul!!!
Well, theres a new release on DVD of the whole series, both seasons, and at Barnes & Noble, you can get it for $60, $54 if you have a B&N discount card. Its a thin pack set, too. It came out July 31, 07.
I LOVE the Dragons Domain spacecraft with the thing onboard. Very beautiful and elegant modelcraft from Brian Johnson and crew. I wish I had a model of that!!
I remember Dragons Domain and End of Eternity, with Peter Something(?), and the entire series, for that matter. Aweome clips. The monster sequences in Dragons Domain reminded me of the squid battle in Disneys "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea".
Dragon's Domain... wow, the memories of that episode giving me nightmares as a kid. It remains, in my humble opinion, one of the most underrated episodes of ANY sci-fi show.
Yes! Agreed here. Scary stuff for a little kid. Funny to think others were affected in the same way. That tentacled monster with the one large glowing eye . . .yeeesh!
Oh hell yes. I was terrified for years after I saw it. I think I was something like 10 years old when that was on and I've never forgotten it. It's the only episode of Space 1999 that I want to see again. I think I'd like to see it just to purge myself of the fear.
Same here! I was around the same age. I remember it was on late at night and I was up alone watching it. I ran to bed and got under the covers as quick as I could after it was over! The most memorable episode.
The first series was so frightening but also made for compulsive viewing. Couldn't get enough of it. I'd go through the stages of longing to see it. Being scared shittless when I did see it. Not being able to sleep afterwards when thinking about it; only to go through the whole cycle again next week. Compulsive but frightening.
Now I know the name of that episode, "Dragons's Domain." Ya, that scared me as a child and was pretty graphic for American day TV back in the 70's. The monster's leftovers of every human that it ate was pretty nasty the way I remember it, but then I was only 7 or 8 years old then.
Dragons Domain is definetly my favorite episode too. Before I saw it on sci fi in the 90s(after not seeing it for years and years) I thought it happend on Alpha.
i was just a tad too young to remember anything specific about the show. we'd watch just to wait for Mya (?) to change into some animal form. i remember once she was a caterpillar, and some evil bitch threatened to squash Mya. we were yelling "change back, Mya! what are you waiting for!".
"Dragon's Domain" is my all time favorite SPACE:1999 episode. Scared the heck out of me as a kid. I don't remember the second one, but it looks pretty nifty, too.
yep, but the episode was even scarier... the damn tentacles, the way the beast dragged the victims inside, and even worse, the disposal of the carbonized bodies... omg... well, maybe i was younger when i saw it, than when i saw the Alien movie... anyway, the idea for both stories was not completely original, and was told many times before and after both of them...
U have very nice quality on Video also could u or anyone else plz upload one of the Cool episodes here if they to big make em part 1 and 2 or at least something from DVD version i had them once and lost em cause i gave em to a Friend and he moved Abroad and took em with him some years ago !
