Because the ancient Greeks and Romans were obsessed with human beauty and the same proportions were used in their architecture.
We on the other hand have gone down the road of the ugly and abstract. Compare Michelangelo's David to any piece of "modern art" which is just crap designed to be weird for the sake of being weird to gain controversy and notoriety. It's an insipid culture devoid of timeless beauty, obsessed with fads that pass and fade as quickly as they appeared.
very true, in my city they keep tearing down new buildings every 10 years or so & putting up more soulless shopping malls & car parks. I'm glad the old well crafted buildings are well protected otherwise they would have bulldozed those too!
as a jew, why don't you Jackie talk about Israel?we have museums in Tel Aviv too, so please be true to your fellow jews..please sir please..thankyou..
@johnsmdm Because Southern Europe has the most beautiful art and architecture on Earth, I'm sorry but Israel has nothing that can compare to the parthenon or to the Elgin marbles, that is not an insult but an axiom of reality.
Israel should stick to its own strengths i.e. religion.
Otherwise you only get disappointment after all hell is where the British are the chefs, the Swiss are the lovers, the French are the mechanics, the Italians make everything run on time
so true. people don't do quality work on buildings anymore. my parents just had a renovation in their house. that shit won't last for longer than 5 years.
Paul Fussell addresses bad architecture in "Bad Or The Dumbing of America," and how we are thrilled with the second rate. He spoke about architecture and he minces NO words about it either!
Yes, I heard about that, Janet, I used to do a lot of business in LA. It just sickened me when they tore down the Ambassador. What history it witnessed, such a crime.
How wonderful your trip sounds and you're so right, its saddens me that that most cities in this country, have no respect for historic architecture. Our city regularly tears down its oldest buildings to make way for some high-rise, blight on the landscape.
I went behind the iron curtain before it fell. The communists could be half way finished with something and it would already be a piece of crap that was falling apart.
I am so glad you did this as I was discussing the destruction of Penn station here in NY, the outrage it sparked, and the rise of Historic Preservation. I am proud to be studying Historic Preservation. Thank you for this!!
My problem with modern architecture is not it's staying power or lack therof, it's the lack of ornamentation and lack of imagination used when planning it. It's mostly all so boring.
When they built the Vatican & the Coloseum they expected it to last forever & it will. You don't see the huts that the peasants lived in. Today's peasants live in homes w/air conditioning you can't build a middle, low income home for a good price if you built them like the Romans did. I'd rather live in today's world then live in ancient times w/our lousy architecture, then be rampaged or worse by the Pagans & Mongrels of those days.
Everyone is always out to spot the next trend, from television programming to automobiles. In the long run, there is only one lasting trend, and that's quality.
its like this.. similar to what 'MikeNobodyIsHere' said, if they build stuff that last, they make no money, they rather build crap so they get paid more to come back and repair it,
similar to the cure for AIDS, their actually is a cure, i know this for a fact, but the government wont release it because the insurance companies will lose billions of dollars and the economy will suffer... so yeah... VERY MATERIALISTIC WORLD, ITS SAD HOW OUR DESTRUCTION IS BEING CAUSE BY US
most people don't even know what a dovetail is these days. if they do know, they don't see the brilliance in it. your an interesting man, Mr. Mason. i appropriate this video.
LOL! You're right! Funny, witty, and TRUE! Not only that, Jackie, but anyone with the intellect of an ancient Roman architect would not have built on the coast of Florida where their gorgeous buildings would likely be blown to smithereens by hurricanes. That goes for New Orleans too. Those dumb shits built hundreds of feet below sea level and thought levees would hold back the ocean??? Dumb fucks.
You idiot. The ocean had nothing to do with the tragedy of Katrina ... it was the fucking levee holding back Lake Pontratrain. No offense -- anyway you are partly right ... everything in New Orleans should be made so as to be able to float on rising waters.
"Why Don't They Make Them Like They Used To?" Two words; "planned obsolescence". There's no money in making good things that last. They build crap so you have to keep replacing everything.

Time was not a issue then. Time is expensive now. You don't see construction projects lasting one or two life times.
