The Singkíl originated from the Maranao people who inhabit the shores of Lake Lanao. It is derived from a story in the Darangen, the Maranao interpretation of the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. The name of the dance itself means "to entangle the feet with disturbing objects such as vines or anything in your path". It is a popular dance performed during celebrations and other festive entertainment. Originally only women, particularly royalty, danced the Singkíl
This is not a muslim or islamic dance..They dont do these dances in afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, The Emirates, Jordan, Malay, Pakistan..etc...Its a Filipino folk dance that originated in the island of Mindanao...enough said..!!!!!!
In many reactions you find that Filipinos call this a Muslim dance. Exactly which elements are found Islamic or Muslim? I do see the men wearing caps which are also used in prayer. But after watching this dance I don't particularly find its focus to be on any Islamic teaching. And if there's a Muslim dance will you call 'tinikling' a Christian dance and 'panggalay' a Hindhu dance? Why is religion attributed to this dance?
@hetismij21 it's a form of occasion not a religious form! it is a commercial before the marinao bride and groom get married! it's not a worship dance!
baka magkapatid ung prinsesa..ung unang sumayaw unung kapatid na hndi ikakasal..tas ung pangalawa un na ung prinsesang ikakasal..?? or baka..dlwa asawa ng prinsipe..kase dba sa muslim kahit ilan mapangasawa ng lalake..
the princess she has a perfect solemn expression. the focus should be on her, no need for the sultan in my opinion. the dancing with a sword seems to be a bit hostile especially knowing this is a 'muslim dance'. i'd rather see the princess in all her glory and power. In all a very perfect performance. well done everybody.
@hetismij21 that's because according to a muslim legend, besides that earthquake and falling trees, the sultan came to the rescue and the princess saiid sorry by the slow dance, hence, singkil is born
they say that singkil is based on story of a princess saved by the prince. the movement represents the princess' escape from a strong earth quake (imitated by the bamboos) where she tried to move across the shaking ground. then the prince, well, rush off to save her
The dance is said to have been named after either the leg bracelets or anklets of silver, nickel or brass with chiming bells of the same name or the act of voluntarily or accidentally entangling on ones feet in either vines or tall grass.
ssywin nmuen yahn... mga grade 6... sa amazing grace school... field demo... pero uhn mga cast diyan... Reyna, Princess, King (uhn lalaki na nasa corner), Warrior/Prince (uhn savior nuhn princess), Katulong nung Princess, bamboo clappers, fan dancers... smuen Prince, Princess, Payong Holder, Bamboo Clappers and Fan Dancers... I am very proud that only filipinos can do this fantastic (but dangerous) dance. We will make our dance beautiful... from Grade 6 SY, 2009-2010 Amazing Grace School
Siguro, may personal kang galit dun sa princess anoh? pakialam mo! Pilipino ka nga! Wala kang sense of encouragement! At least sya eh nakasayaw as princess eh ikaw dyan ka na lang. MAMATAY KA SA INGGET!! GAGA!
i think the steps are still patterned with bayanihan... since the make a dual princess performance... sana ginawa na lang as wedding dance talaga para mas regal... back up dancers mejo kulang sa expression... kitang kita sa galaw ng mga pamaypay... di kasi pare pareho ang angle ng kanilang hawak... sharing some comments lang po... THE MUSIC IS REALLY FANTASTIC...!!! KEEP IT UP!!!!
please come to the pdgw conference this fall in san diego. we will be addressing the issue of real and traditional vs theatrical. as the philippines signed on the UN declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples and as the katutubo community have addressed, is folk dancing cultural preservation or cultural misrepresentation? under the 2003 decleration of the philippines indigenous peoples conference, folk dancing was considered "cultural genocide." please come in the fall to sd.
I love the part where the diwatas come in and brandish their fans in the princess' direction. Great interpretation! Thanks for sharing; I've been waiting so long to see the Likha rendition of this dance. :]

@nicalorena
There's only one princess - the one holding two fans. The other is her lady-in-waiting, the one holding the umbrella and following her every step.
