Today's films may have shock value, however most of that shock value is really cheap, and has no intellectual properties to it, and that's what most of today's audience is subjecting itself to: all show and no substance.

I think people generally don't understand WHAT these cartoons are supposed to be parodying. They weren't violent for the sake of being violent, but they were making fun of the Western film cliches and conventions. from the 40's to the early 70's, there were tons of Western movies, and TV shows all around depicting the era as a time of ultra violent gunmen and lawlessness. The whole 'walk into a bar and shoot someone at random' was poking fun at the ludicrous casualness of gun fights there.
