  • love that chugging sound!

  • No more U-Boats..they have been cutting up the old B-36s there in the yard at Waycross..they sold off the "c" units to progressive rail and I have seen them cut up too!!

  • Quite literally the engine that could

  • 1:42 yeeeah baby!

  • Great video. You cant beat a chuggin GE. You can really here them at work.

  • I like seeing those clean cars with no graffiti on the sides!

  • as slow as they are going , it looks like they could have used another loco in front or a helper to get them over the top

  • Wow, nice video, great sound of power!

  • I like CSX's Yellow Nose 2 sceme

  • Classic GE FDL Chug! Brings back fond memories of Seaboard Coast Line U33B and U36B's at full throttle hauling heavy phosphate trains in Florida. That distinctive chugging could be heard miles away in more urbanized areas.

  • would they even bother to repaint those, or do they just keep washing them?

  • Its a shame they couldn't have still had the tower here today.

  • That's a hell of a gradient !!

  • Your videos all have fantastic sound...love the nature. great quality.

  • Hey Jack! Great videos! I'm sure you can answer a few questions I have. When a train has 4 or 5 engines at the front, are all of them pulling at the same time? When a train has 3 or 4 engines at the back, are all of them pushing at the same time? How are they sincronized so the ones in the back don't push more than the pull of the ones in the front? Seems to me that steel against steel don't have too much friction, how do trains manage to brake in an emergency? I thank you for your answer.

  • those are a couple of C30-7's =D

  • they look a lot like C36

  • Those old GEs are pretty cool!

  • Wow What a sound!! Almost like the big Alco(MLW) units that roared past my house in Canada till just a few years ago. Thanks.

  • damn i miss the old GE chugg a lugg sound!!

  • Man, beautiful shots like these are more romantic than any sunrise or sunset in the world. awsome vid.

  • Nothing beats Viewing the Real Thing, I'd rather watch this, Than any Model Rail road. Great Vid, Thumbs up on this one.

  • the sound of those GE's remind me of all the C30-7's and ALCO locomotives i used to watch when i was a kid in in mexico,ex-land of alcos and general electric dash 7's

  • Doesnt CSX still use their U Boats on work trains? Sorry for the dumb question, I havent followed up on CSX's old SCL/L&N U boats in awhile.

  • Yes! The older 4 axle units do work service, and I have seen them on an occasional train. But the old big six axle units have all been retired. Thanks for looking. Jackmp294

  • @1jackdk hey di du know in the small town of westford mass they still use these csx shown in the vid

  • @1jackdk how about now are any of the GE U-boats & B-boats in service?

  • @tartopfan Very few of the old ones. A couple of shortlines, and the LS&I still has a few they use on ore trains. Thanks for watching...

  • @SP4449Warbaby

No, the last of the U boats were retired in the late 1990's. These are C30-7, the last of the was retired around 2005/6. They still have a few B30-7 and B36-7 floating around, but word is that they will all be retired by March. Good riddance

  • Why good riddace? I loved the Dash-7's, it'll be a shame to see them leave.

  • I am a Chessie fan, after seeing the first CSX unit in 1987, I dedicated my filming career to capture the remaining Chessie, SBD, SCL, Georgia, Family lines, C&O, B&O, CP BIG M's, etc... back between 1987 to 1998. 120 VHS tapes later, now putting them to DVD, I am glad I did that!! All worth the time back then, I am ready to call Pentrex! I cant see a Chessie SD-50 rolling through town anymore... All boring nowdays, same ol same ol, good night...

  • Sounds great my dad worked for C&O to CSX 39 years. I have a lot of great memories running trains at the local yard and coal , ore docks. I have a lot of old pics I could send ya sometime.

  • @mygirl22ward Is that part of Sand Patch Grade in the Sand Patch Grade/Horseshoe Curve Combo DVD?

  • dam that shit sounds jus like a group of ALCOs pulling hard. An awesome sound...5 stars!! Only thing this vid needs is a lone SD40 added in.

  • Well shot. Steady. Good angles. I'm not a railfan, but I appreciate the videography that goes into a good production. Nice.

  • Thanks for the complement Boss302fan! I assume you are a fan of the 69-70 Mustang Boss 302, a fine muscle car. Take care, Jackmp294

  • I am indeed. I have the same Boss 302 I owned in college.

I also do professional videography, although I don't shoot that much railroad material. ( My full time job is actually in the railroad industry so when I'm off work I seldom hang around railyards).

However, I have helped put together videos for industrial development and safety/hazmat training.

    Again, nice shot.

  • i love calm before the thunderous storm. sounds great 5*

  • five stars ***** im from mexico

  • Thanks for the five stars from Mexico. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care, Jack

  • OK OK

  • Awesome vid and great sound.

  • very nice video great sound

  • The Calm nature, before storm of mans machine, nice angle, nice sounds FANTASTIC!!!!

  • Thanks Rich. Those old GE's sound great, and after they pass, and the storm was over, nature kicked right back in like nothing happened. Thanks for looking. Take care, Jackmp294

  • You da man, Jack!

  • Just a faster version of "I think I can, I think I can..." :)

  • Holy sit that was sweet

    i need new underwear

  • My bad man I clicked the wrong thumb on there, damn mouse, I mean't a thumbs up, I agree older GEs are awsome, we get them up here where I live and they sound great especially when they chug nothing like a train struggling a little bit.

  • awesome

  • That has to be Q359...Q349 was a Marion, Ohio to Indianapolis{Avon} job...I used to work out of Avon and Q358-Q359 were Avon to Cumberland and Cumberland to Avon Trains....

  • Great vid. love to see old locos doing good work.

but why do CSX locos seem much bigger than the rest o:

  • Jack, i dont think these are C30-7's... CSX stopped using C30's back in 95. These are most likely B36-7's or maybe even C30-7's

  • You answered your own question. They are C30-7's. You probably ment C36-7, which they are not. They are most deffinately not B36-7. the B stands for two axles per truck, and the C30 the C is for 3 axles per truck. Now here is the low down. They are both C30-7's, 7037 is an ex-L&N C30-7, unit builder #42458. The 7079 is an ex-SCL C30-7 builder # 43018. Hope this helps you out. Take care, Jackmp294

  • itneresting. Yet these units have the same body as a B36-7...

  • The B36-7 is a bit shorter than the C30-7.

The C30-7 -is 67'3' long, C for 3 axels per truck, and 30 for 3000 hp 12 cyl FDL engine... B36-7 is 61'2" long, B for 2 axels per truck, and 3600 hp 16 cyl turbo charged FDL engine. Hope that helps even more... Jack

  • ok NOW i get it lol. You didn't have to burn me ya know? lol Were coming down to West Newton Tomrrow so it'll be good to meet ya finally ( if your home)

  • Actually these C30-7's also have the 16 cylinder 7FDL16. The only C30-7 model that had the 12 cylinder version were the Conrail C30-7A's, wich these are not.

  • Yes, you are correct. I forgot that these where the 7FDL16. Thanks, Jack

  • Very nice and clear sound.

  • Are these locomotives C30-7's?

  • yes they are...

  • Great clip thanks, nice to hear them clearly like that. Why do they sound so different, is it because of the firing order of the pistons?

  • Too bad he didn't give you a toot of the horn. It still had a Leslie S5T.

  • Really nice work! NelsonArtWorks has some really fine B&O prints and you can also get them directly from the B&O Railroad Museum too.

  • HI Jack have you ever been up on wills or haystack mountain and watched the trains going through the Narrows? I Lived off of Fayette St. in Cumberland,Maryland and played all over Haystack Mountain. I watched a lot of trains in my time. There is a place on the cliffs that you could here the people talking that were down at the gas station next to the Bridge over Wills Creek. Hay nice Video. Joe in Florida

  • Thanks for the compliment Joe. I never been up on Haystack Mountain, and don't know how to get up there. We hiked halfway up the rock slide, and parked in the gas station by the bridge to do it. We did get some nice pictures and videos both ways, toward Cumberland, and toward the Narrows. Neat place, but those big bolders where a little scary, and you wonder if any of them are going to come down on top of you. Take care, and thanks for watching. Jack...

  • Very nice video!

  • There is nothing better than a U-Boat at full song!!

  • There ain't no doubt about it!!!! Thanks for looking. Jack...

  • hol up now. You both cant tell me 2 GE units with one or more SD40s or SD50s at full power dont sound more beautiful than jus GE units alone.

  • EMD SD40's sound fantastic pulling Sand Patch grade, but the old GE's still get my vote. The best ones I ever heard, was the old U25B. I remeber them well. The sound of three or four of them was unreal. It was like someone beating on a carpet. But the sound of a set ALCO's is great also. I have plenty of them on here also. You sound check them out. Thanks for looking. Jack

  • Too bad they're turbo-charged. The sound of a 6,8,12V detroit screaming makes the hair stand up on every limb! BTW, got one winding up as a ringtone!

  • Any old Detroit 2-stroke sounds amazing!

  • I'd love to hear that is there any way you could post it or send it somehow?

  • I dunno, I grew up in northern Illinois and have fond memories of EMD's pulling Full Bore on Burke Hill outside of Savanna, IL to get up out of the Mississippi River valley. or Run 8 at Morrison on the CNW/UP Chicago-Clinton IA portion of the overland route.

  • i grew down in Alabama and got nice memories of Chessie System SD40s, GP40s and GP38s pulling long coal drags and mixed freights. Jus the sound of 2 to 3 GE units and 1 or 2 turbocharged 645 powered EMD units added in at full notch 8 power makes my heart stop.

  • cool next time you go you have to go a little further down so you can get them pulling more i love the sound of locomotives pulling hard

  • you gotta love the old dash 7 locomotives from GE i used to see them back in mexico running along them super 7's and they sounded awesome

  • Wow now thats a rare engine to see still running

  • I wish they where still running. This was taken in 1999. To see these old babies in action, you need to Michigan on the LS&I, (which I have several videos of them on youtube) to see them. Better hurry though, they are on borrowed time, and may be replaced soon. Thanks for looking. Jack...

  • wow this video was taken in 1999 looks Brand New!!!

  • Hard to believe it was almost 10 years ago. Feels like I took it yesterday. Jack...

  • Great video. I always love hearing a train climbing a grade.

    Thanks for sharing it!

  • Glad you enjoyed them. Thanks for looking. Jack...

  • Beautiful Digital Video crisp like your actually there!!!

  • Thanks for the compliment. Glad you enjoyed them. Jack...

  • Geez they sound like steam locomotives.

  • There is nothing old about these GE units. They are bette rthan the crap running on the rails today! Wide cabs suck! it's like watching a freight train in mute! No sound!

  • Your right, got to agree with you. Very tired of wide cabs, and the mute, but, the new GEVO's sound pretty good, and they are noiser than most other units, and the sound of some SD40's pulling a hill isn't bad either. Thanks for looking. Jack

  • I cant stand widecabs either, although I love CN's Safety cab. I wish I could go back to the early to mid 80's. I miss all the alcos and u-boats...

  • Alot of things in this scene are now gone. The old wooden bridge across the tracks, the CPLs, SA tower & the C30-7s.

  • Not to mention some of the tracks, and the helper pocket. Thanks for looking. Jackmp294

  • they took the helper pocket out as well?

  • awesome video with great capturing of the old c30's under load.

  • When were they taken off the roster?

  • I'm not really sure. Its been a year or two now, as I got the in work train service a few years back. Jack

  • i believe since early 2006 they were taken off the roster. There maybe some unscrapped C30s down at Waycross. Other than a few who were shipped to Argentina for future use all are retired.

  • Good stuff, sure do miss those old girls!

  • magnificent. best locomotives ever built.

  • I agree. Was lucky enough to get a cab ride in one. Also, those EL U34CH's are very foundly remembered when I lived in NJ. I have lots of sound movies of them, and need to figure a way to get them on youtube. Thanks for looking, and take care. Jack

  • yeeeaahhh u show that hill!

  • Would love to see more old CSX footage! Thanks for posting!

  • This video was taken in August of 1999. I see the older 4 axle units go by my house on a regular bases. There was at least 2 that I saw this week alone. 12-08-2007
